Hi everyone-
I just joined a few minutes ago after finding this page.

My Question:
Would it be looked badly upon if I took a semester or two break? Lately, my mom whom I live with has been suffering with chronic depression and cancer. Its overwhelming because its everyday I try to comfort her but I cant, and its having a major impact on my grades and mental wellbeing- I'm now on antidepressants. I also work full- time but do not have the money to move out. What would be your advice?

It will be a red flag, but if you can explain it well, it shouldn't be a deal breaker.

Honestly I would think that's a VERY reasonable reason as to why you took a break. My heart goes out to you and your mother, I can't imagine going through that. The most important thing is for you to be there for your mom and ALSO to take care of yourself too. Your health and well being comes first before anything else-- remember that.

This.

If it's severe enough that you have to take anti-depressants for yourself, I don't think it will be a red flag at all. When you re-enter your classes afterwards, just remember how you felt and what you learned during that gap semester/year. You will have to bring that up again in your application as well as interview. The key here is to stay sincere and genuine. If not, you might be perceived lazy or easily misunderstood.

Learn everything from that gap semester/year. What does it mean to be there 24/7 for someone with depression? I don't know the answer, but you might have one in the future.

My heart goes to you and your mother as well.
