I'm currently taking classes at a community college, in order to transfer to UC Santa Cruz or UC Davis it's highly recommended I take the three equivalent Biology courses that transfer (yes, three)

The only way I can do this is if I take the last two biology courses in the spring semester. (They don't offer either of these during the summer) This is how my spring schedule would look like:

BIOL 410 Principles of Botany 5 Units

BIOL 420 Principles of Zoology 5 Units

PHYS 360 Physics II 4 Units

So a total of 14 units (doable) but I'm worried about taking three lab classes, two of them being in depth Biology courses that requires a lot of time to pass.

I talked to the IA who's taken the classes and she said only 2 people out of thousands of students have taken both classes simultaneously and passed with an A, (one of them had a doctorate and was going back to school for some reason), (the other had taken the classes before and had to drop due to illness) the rest usually drop out or get C's in both courses.

Despite her advice, I am still adamant in taking them both together, is this doable or am I way in over my head?

Seems like you have your mind made up! Since determination is half the battle, it seems to me that you will be fine. I haven't ever taking a lab at a CC, only a math class, so I don't know how lab are there. In general, however, I have taken 3 lab courses/5 total courses during one semester, been told it was too much, and it ended up being my best semester in terms of grades because I was so on top of my work and organized to keep up with everything.

:luck:

while i do not doubt that community college science courses can be very rigorous (sometimes even more so than top private schools), i seriously doubt that the IA is telling the exact truth without embellishments.

what are your other commitments? if you are light on ECs, then that course schedule should be manageable. but if you are also working, doing ECs, then you might run into problems.

but if you are confident with your abilities, then go for it.

If you are able to transfer without BIO 410/420 (TAG?) I would recommend it. But then your schedule will only consist of Physics. Is there anything else you can take?

I skipped those two classes and they were much easier at UCD. I hear zoo is hell on earth.

Edit: Oh yeah, don't just take one or the other because either way you will have to take 20B/20C (UCSC) or 2B/2C (UCD).

Can't TAG because my gpa isn't high enough. I would skip those classes if I could, if I get a 3.41 GPA by the end of fall, do you think I could almost surely get into UCD without a TAG? Even though I'm missing pre-reqs like the second o-chem, and the two biology courses? It really is the only UC that doesn't require you take all 3 biology classes.

Well, I think it would be better to have more series completed by the time you transfer. I applied to Davis 2 years ago and got in (NO TAG) without doing Chem 421 and Bio 410/420.

However, I'm a little hesitant to offer you advice without knowing which classes you've finished, your GPA, circumstances, etc. I would go talk to an advisor to see how you should go about applying to the UC's.

If you have more questions feel free to PM me.

Thanks, I'll go email the UC Davis transfer coordinator.

What was your GPA that fall?
