Taking less than 12 credits.. will it harm my chances?

As long as you can graduate with a degree and you can explain your situation as to why you couldn't have a full time student status in one semester you should be okay.
 
I believe so long as the average time in courses rounds off to be ~15 hours (not including summer), then you should be fine. Finish in 4 years and you shouldn't hear a word about it.

From what I have read in the past about credit loads, most people have stated credit loads of 12 being okay. If you are working, then there might be more wiggle room (ex. 6-12 credits with a 20-40 hour job).

Now what if it takes you six years to graduate but you are full-time and never failed a class...
