Hey all,

Just wanted to get your input on something.

I go to a school where 18 credits is our max, and most semesters I have taken four 3-credit courses (12 credits) and then filled in the rest of the credits (to a total of 15-18 credits) with labs, research credit, and/or TA credit.

For next semester, I was thinking about taking three 3-credit courses (9 total credits), and then adding on research credit AND TA credit AND lab credit for a total of about 17 credits.

My questions are:

  • Will it look bad that I am taking only three courses? (None of them are easy... two sciences and one Honors level History course)
  • Is TAing the same subject for more than a year look bad? I've TA'ed Organic Chemistry for the past year and love it, so I'd like to continue.
  • My credits for Research and TAing have a letter grade attached, so they contribute to my GPA. Will med schools keep this / consider it, or do I have to ignore it when I calculate my AMCAS GPA?
I just don't want to seem like I'm taking less courses and doing research/TA instead for the GPA boost -- I do really want to contribute more to my lab next semester and continue TAing OChem.

Thanks for any advice!
