If you could take any science class for fun, what would it be?

Disliked these classes:

- Botany...all we did was learn about CAM 3/4, photosynthesis, name of plants, flowers, etc. It was a really boring class and I don't remember a thing about that class anymore

- Zoology...all we did was learn parts of animals. It was a very lame class.

- Nutrition...you would think this would be an interesting class, but it was boring, really boring. All we did was learn how to read a label, learn about the very basics of hormones and vitamins, how to plan a diet, how diets work, etc.

- General biology...talk about taking a science class with a lot of students that just want to pass to graduate.

Classes that I liked:

A&P..it was ok, I guess. I would have liked to learn more than the basics though.

Biochemistry...I liked this class. It took some time to become comfortable with thinking about our body as interacting molecules.

Pathology...way to easy of an undergraduate course.

Embryology....it takes time to wrap your brain around how the cells migrate, where they migrate, and how it all works together. I liked this class.

Pharmacology...just pure memorization at this level.

Genetics...it was ok. I've been studying this stuff since 2002, so I was bored, lol.

Immunology...I liked this class. This class actually tested my memorization ability. Still got an A in it though. I had this one stupid b'h that would always try to look at my exams to get answers. So on the final exam I knew the material like the back of my hand and was done with a 60 question exam in 10 minutes. So I looked over at the lady when I stood up and just smiled and she was frustrated and still on the first page, lol.

What are some interesting classes that you took?

I wish there were more interesting classes like enzyme biology, signal transduction pathology, and similar classes. It sucks that one needs to be in a PhD program to take classes like these.

I'm going back to school in the fall and I'm looking for some interesting science classes to take (I will be finishing off a biochem degree). What do you think of the following:

- Stat Mthds for Clin Trials
- Functional Neuroanatomy

I'm already going to be taking: Cell metabolism, neurobiology, physiology and pharmacology, HIV and AIDS

***P.S. This thread is for a fun discussion only*** So to the medical students, we know that we would learn more than we can remember in medical school. So put the tail back away.

My first quarter at UCI I took a non-major bio class for fun called "Molecular Basis of Human Disease". While the class never really got into the in-depth workings of the diseases we studied, it was fun looking at a wide spectrum of diseases and not having to work exceptionally hard for a grade 😀

A future class that I'm looking forward to circuit analysis which is a classes dedicated to playing with resistors, capacitors, solder, and all those fun things. 👍

I did/do not take any classes for fun. I would save the tuition $ and buy something awesome.

Edit: Or cling to the $, we are all soon to be poor.

I'll be doing pathophysiology and probably biochemistry of lipids at some point.

Electives for my biochem major:

Systems Neurobiology - This is one of the hardest neuroscience classes my school has to offer, but I love the professor teaching it, so I kind of want to take it..

Physical Chemistry - HAHAHAH not! 😛 Kudos to whoever can do that stuff...physics + chem = not for me

Diseases of the Brain sounds awesome too...heck I should just be a neuro major 😉

OMG, physical chemistry was the worst time of my life. It was a "group-learning" class, so instead of my teacher actually teaching anything, we sat around in groups and were dumb/useless together.

Grad school has fun electives. Emerging Infectious Diseases was pretty great -- at one point we were asked to come up with the pathogen we thought would be the "best" bioterror agent (as an intellectual exercise!) and explain why. Vaccines and Immunotherapeutics was also good. Paul Offit (rotavirus vaccine) is at Penn, so he gave a bunch of talks. Someone came to talk about Gardasil. We took a tour of Merck 🙂
