What do you guys think about taking a premed course (biology II) over the summer at a SMALL state school (not considered a junior college)? I am currently a rising sophomore and have already taken bio I at another institution. I'm still left in the dark. Some popel think it won't affect them in admissions while others think that med school look unfavorable on this. Help please?

How's a rising sophomore different from a falling one?

You'll just have more schools from which to request transcripts when it's time to apply, but that's about it.

You'll end-up taking upper-level sciences at your "main" university, right? Once you get an A in Biochemistry or Molecular Biology or Physiology or what-not no one will care where you took Bio 2.

In the off chance that you're not familiar with the term or you're not to be funny, I'll explain. Rising sophomore means the OP just finished freshman year, and will be a sophomore starting in August when school begins. Since school hasn't begun yet, some would argue that the OP is not yet a sophomore.

Ah, a fancy way of saying, "I'll be a sophomore in the fall." Thanks, I get it. Pretty fancy.

That's my problem. I am an engineer who wants the option of being premed if I choose to later on (please don't get me started). So I have this core curriculum that I need to complete. However, I've already planned out my schedule for the next three years. I can't fit biology in (It's only offered in the spring term) this coming spring when I'm a sophomore. Now I could wait until the spring of my junior year, but that just seems stupid and unreasonable. So no, I probably won't be taking upper-level science BIOLOGY courses at my main univeristy. I will be with math and chem, though.

Also, if I request a transcript to be sent to my main university from the one where I'll be taking the summer course, my main university has a record of it. Do I really still need to send the transcript from the univeristy that I do summer work to wherever I want to apply? THanks.

I took orgo I & II last summer at the local college. Just do well in the bio class and it won't matter where you took it.

And yes, you'll need to send a transcript from the college where you took the summer class at.

Then if one takes courses at two different institutions during summer, that could cost a lot to send the transcripts to say 10-15 schools? But the transfer credits are shown on my main instituiton's transcript.

you only need to send transcripts to TMDSAS/AMCAS not to each school.

You only send the transcript out to the AAMC, which will verify it and send the information to the schools.

Even if the credits show up on the main institution's transcript, you still need to send it from the school where you took the classes. Check out the AAMC website for more information.

so it's good even if I don't take upper-level courses?

Thanks for telling me about the transcript. I'm definitely not far in the application process to care about how to fill out applications 😉
