Hey all--

Wondering who here packs their meals to campus. I will be commuting a bit of a distance and don't have the luxury of going back and forth for meals.

Most importantly HOW do you pack your lunch? I'm thinking of getting a Mr. Bento or similar bento style box. Or perhaps just take some glass tupperware? What is effective guys?

🙂

Thanks!

I may be an outlier, but I normally blend my food (mostly lentils and chicken) into puree form and put it into bottles & stick them in a lunch bag w/ an ice pack. Easy to make, easy to eat, healthy, and easy to keep track of quantity.

You disgust me.

What about taste? What about the satisfaction of eating? What about the benefits of chewing and using the teeth?

I'm all for eating healthy, easy to make meals but to subsist on a puréed diet doesn't sound very pleasurable.

Oh my goodness. You're just a big baby. Might as well invest in Gerber baby food and carry tubs of that with you to school.

I think we all did when we were infants.

Why don't you have a PEG Inserted? That would be even faster and easier! No more messy chopping up food and puréeing them. Think about all the time you'll save!

Well, as I said, I'm probably an outlier. I'm all for taste and the satisfaction of eating, but the truth is, most of the time, when we're eating routine meals, we're not really even paying attention to how things taste. We're either talking to people or thinking about other things. And I do eat solid food, just not when I'm on the go. Also, have you tried to eat plain boiled lentils and chicken? I promise you it's not as easy to scarf down as when it's in puree form. It takes a lot longer and there's a lot more dry-heaving involved. Also, there's no better way to quantify your food to meet body composition goals, and those are more important to me than fleeting "satisfactions" that I personally don't even really consciously experience. But that's me. From a purely n=1 standpoint, this method has served me well.

Actually, the more I think about this, the more I like it. Maybe this should be a way to combat food addiction. One of the problems with food addiction as opposed to substance abuse is that a crack addict can stop using crack, but a food addict can't stop eating. They will constantly be triggering their addiction for the rest of their life. I mean, we don't tell a raging alcoholic to go drink michelob ultra, so why do we tell 300 pound food addicts to go cook a healthy and delicious meal? Give them a tasteless paste that provides subsistence so their brain no longer associates food with pleasure.

I pack a turkey sandwich with protein bars, unsalted peanuts, and fruit in a plastic grocery store bag.

Lol, I can't tell if you're kidding (I don't think so), but this is true. I have pretty bad self-control with food. If I don't plan and measure things out before hand, I won't likely know when to stop. One bite and the beast takes over. Then I recover my senses to find the entire cake/pizza/etc. decimated and I feel nothing but guilt. It's like when Hercules went mad for a bit and when he came to, he sees that he's killed his wife and kids. Very similar. Much easier and more effective to manage things upstream.

Take frozen food in a lunch box, boom. Problem solved.

I bought a washable lunch bag from Target and bring my food in a pyrex tupperware. I usually pack a sandwich or some type of salad (I like using raw kale because you can dress it the night before and it won't get soggy like lettuce or spinach), a piece of fruit and some string cheese or almonds.

I also try to keep some frozen dinners on hand so that if I'm in a rush, I can just throw one in my backpack and call it a day.

Really people? Still hung up on the puree thing? What he does on his own is his own business.

Does anyone here use a pyrex or bento box of some sort? If so, what do you suggest?

i just have lots of tupperware containers and i bought a lunch bag/cooler thing to bring with me to work. during my one day off, i usually cook a large abtch of breakfasts (ranging from omelette muffins to sweet potato burritos) and a large salad (quinoa, or something else that will keep like vegan enchiladas) and usually something sweet as well. every night i put it into tupperware containers and in the morning i just pack up my lunch tote and go! 🙂 been working well so far

Tell me more about these sweet potato burritos.

Have you never had a job where you brought food for a lunch break? This is the same thing. Buy a reusable lunchbox. Gladware/Ziplock plastic containers are great for things that you need to heat up, plus they're dishwasher and freezer safe. Pyrex is heavy and can break, so I don't use that for transporting food to and from school. Plastic baggies or saran wrap for sandwiches, pack a granola bar if you need a snack in the afternoon, etc. When I have time, I like to cook stuff in the crockpot (like 8-10 servings) and freeze in individual portions for later.

Is money an issue?
- Whole Foods or Sun Harvest have amazing packed meals of healthy and delicious fish or chicken with veggies and interesting sides that you merely warm up.

- Otherwise get acquainted with sauces...buy/make a few variants and take them in a small container along with whatever food you'll have in your other container. Boiled veggies with salt + pepper and some vinegar are mmm addictive.

I love Pyrex. I'm not a med student but I'm typically gone from 6:30 am until 6-10 pm so I pack my lunch and usually my dinner. The only downside to Pyrex is it's weight but it lasts forever and it's super convenient to be able to run it through the dishwasher (not that you can't with regular Tupperware, it just won't stand the test if time).

I think I'm going with Pyrex then. Do you put your stuff in the student fridge? How do you keep it cold? Ever run into problems with people stealing your lunch/lunch bag?

Can I do this? I thought people wouldn't insert a PEG unless I had swallowing issues.

Seriously considering this now.

Hey girl, don't hate!

Only if you approach the right people :naughty:
we can schedule a consult every other wednesday from 1 to 5 am:naughty:

A PEG tube is also a great conversation starter when you're trying to pick up chicks at the bar. Only second to a colostomy bag.

Interestingly, both are tucked under your shirt and neither need to be mentioned during the pick-up phase. I have had friends with ostomies whom I am absolutely certain have a better game than you.

That is...really gross haha. 👍

I try to find the free food on campus whenever I can.

Not sure what other med schools have, but we have a lounge with two full sized fridges, so everyone puts their food in there. It's good to have a lunch bag with your name on it, don't just throw your food in a plastic bag. Hypothetically everyone should be honorable and not steal food, but it definitely happens. Food is more likely to be stolen out of a plastic bag or if it's just sitting on the shelf than if it is in a lunchbox.

Instead of pureeing it, you should have it pre-chewed. Since you're all about time management and speedy digestion, it would certainly be helpful to have "an edge" on the puree.

Honestly, just **** you. I hate you and **** you.

You turned a ridiculous joke that is commonly used on the boards into a reality.

Med students.

Lol, don't think this is a med student thing as much as it is a miscer thing.

Food is too glorious to be reduced to mangled purée slime. My standard pb&j for lunch now seems Iron Chef worthy

I thought this was a joke about med students not having time to eat, but I think you're serious.

If so, I highly recommend the Starbucks IV drip. Combine that with an adult diaper and you might never have to leave your work desk again. Talk about saving time.

Well... it's maybe not that much of a time saver once you factor in the repeated trips to the ED when the tube gets clogged...🙄

It's not that I DON'T have time to eat. I could make time if I wanted, but I'd rather do something else.

who the **** purees chicken?

It's delish. Nothing like de-boning a 2.5 lb oven roasted or rotisserie chicken (take off the skin first which contains half the calories) and spinning it in the blender. Try it and surprise yourself.

The microwave is always the bottleneck at my school. If you hate waiting in line and still want hot food, try the Nissan Thermos line of products. I've got a food thermos and two "tea" tumblers from Thermos that keep stuff hot (not merely warm) for a good 4-5 h.
