President Obama is coming to my school this Friday and I was asked to sing the national anthem BUT I have an interview that day..such a mixed feeling! 🙁

Wow... When you go to your interview make sure they know that you gave up singing the National Anthem for the president so you could attend the interview😉

That will show them. Could just be a blessing in disguise:xf:

Good luck👍

i agree, i would def. call the white house and see if the prez can reschedule. tell him you have an interview 👍

I would reschedule the interview. Singing for the president is a rare experience to be seen on a resume or application. 🙂 Statistically speaking, you have a higher chance of admission into dental school than having another chance to sing for the president.

sing for obama -> acceptance in my book 👍. Def. call them up then talk about it when you actually interview.

I disagree, it's not like you can just plop that on your application now. It might not even be brought up in interviews. Keep the same date you have and stay committed to the application process, as hard as it is to pass up this opp.

True, but which is more valuable to the prospective dental student? An earlier interview date, or singing in front of the president... I would take the interview date lol. Even then, if you are at the interview, this REALLY shows your dedication to the school. just my $0.02 👍

That's true too 🙂 I think both options has it's pros and cons. If the school was my #1 choice (Baylor in this case who has low tuition, is in-state, etc...), for example, I would most likely take the interview rather than sing for the president. But if the school was just a back-up and has a low acceptance-from-interviews rate, I would most likely rather sing for the president 🙂

Not a bad answer!

Personally, I would reschedule the interview unless the school was my absolute #1 choice. Other than that, this detour might take precedent over the interview.

As hard as it may be for us pre-dents to admit it, dentistry isn't the most important thing in the world but our eccentricity tells us otherwise.

You guys are right that it depends on the school. If it was any of my top 5 then I would go to the interview. My bottom 7... well... maybe. Depends on how good at singing i am, and if I can get a pic with him or not haha

Hey, isn't everyone overrating the opportunity to sing in front of the president?

Singing in front of the prez is similar to sleeping with Jessica Alba... kinda cool but you're just another dude on a list with a thousand other dudes.

None of us has a shot with Alba....

Hey! This could be the opportunity to gain a new patient. Now that's good business!

. textbook comedy. thanks for the laugh👍.

With all the joking around, I thought I'd add a serious comment.

While singing for Mr. Obama is pretty sweet, and something to brag about and definitely a great conversations starter... I doubt it will help you on your application at all.

Sure, it means you're the best at your school. Sure, it means that it's "good enough" for the president to hear, but what does that even mean? Most importantly, singing, while a fantastic extracurricular activity (I actually sing myself) but aside from that, doesn't require any skills or talents that is directly related to the practice of dentistry. I guess you can argue serenading a super hot patient 😍, but is that even legal :xf:

All seriousness, I'd go with the interview regardless. I might regret not seeing the president and having a picture of him with me on my wall (is that creepy?) you never know. Maybe you get rejected from all your top schools and it's that one school whose interview you decided to bail on that would have accepted you.

Go with the interview.

You could end up with Rush L. clones as interviewers.

I would take sleeping with Alba over singing with for the president hands down. Plus, I COULD take a picture of that and actually have it be worth something haha 😀

OP: there are pros and cons of both sides. Let us know what you decide 👍

Here's my two cents:

I actually told my parents about this and they're very proud of you...even though they don't know you lol.
Anyway, I agree with everyone that if this school is one of your top choices, then go to the interview. But if it's not a top choice and if you already have a few more interviews lined up, I would sing for Obama. That's such an amazing honor to have and I'm not sure it will come up again. Besides, if you reschedule your interview for only a week or two later, I doubt that it will decrease your chances of getting in. Good luck deciding!

I would rather sing the national anthem at the Superbowl with hundreds of millions of people watching all around the world than sing for the prez.

On second thought, I would rather sleep with Jessica Alba as it will be much, much and much more pleasurable than singing.

On third thought, I would sing the national anthem in front of the prez if I could dub in my own words and make it funny haha (i.e. "And the rockets red glare, the farts bursting in air...)

Seriously? 🙄
