Hi,

If you're a a california resident who goes to an out of state school, when filing taxes, which form should you use? i.e. the regular 540 or the 540NR? thanks.

If you're trying to maintain California residency file the resident 540 form. I did that during my time out of the state. As long as you are out of the state for educational purposes it is legit to keep your residency that way.

Hey, does residency place a role in getting.... eerrrr... residencies? =P
You guys know what I mean!

from what i've read on these boards it seems can be harder to match in california if you leave the state for school. but that if you have family here, ties to the state, that can help. and it seems like it is a good idea to try to do an elective rotation here if you end up leaving the state. i am not sure how much actually maintaining your california residency helps or not.
