TCOM Class Of 2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

For those already at TCOM or for those that may know ...... WHAT IS RANCHLAND??? I guess everyone got that invitation? It's for everyone but not sure what it is. Just another party?

It is a university-wide event (all HSC faculty, staff and students are invited) held just outside of Fort Worth with good food and lots of family-friendly activities: swimming, horses, volleyball, playground, BINGO, pool, air hockey, etc. But, never fear. There is a cash bar, too.

I also did not receive any new information. From what I remember, I think it is a part of the white coat ceremony weekend. Like when family and friends come down. I really wish they would update the new students information. I am so looking forward to the SF. I have not done anything yet.

Hey I want to bowl too! I am 23 years old and have no kids unfortunately. Does that exclude me from ya's bowling nights and stuff? I think it would be awesome to have a close class and do things together. Congratulations to everyone who has gotten accepted, you guys will definitely not regret coming to TCOM. The faculty and students are top notch and the city is pretty, calm and safe. Not to mention it's in texas: we're our own country :meanie: .

Congrats again!

from a Postbac class of '06!

Hey IloveIceCream!! Of course you can come bowl with all of us. Young or old you are always welcome. As far as being a close class.... at least those on SDN will be close!! Even if the rest of the class isn't.

Now for the important stuff....... where close to TCOM can I get the best Thai food 😀 ???

I saw this in another post here on the forum.

Hello All!

I will be going to Spring Fling. I've been reading on this thread for a while. I am 22 and graduating from Baylor in May, yay! Any suggestions on where to live, I went up during spring break, but had no luck. I am hoping the housing fair will help.

Cheers! 😎

Anyone know about doing electives or rounds in the 3rd and 4th years out of the state or country? I think I heard of people doing them out of state, but I want to log in some travel time and wondering if we could do some rotations in other countries. I know its a long time away, but can anyone shine some light on this for me? :luck:

Cheers,

Moxie, I wanna do the same thing! Anyone have any info on that? I did see a slot for "optional elective international rotation" worked into the scheduled rotations list for something a while back.

Congratulations to you all (TCOM class of 2010!!!!). I am hoping to be where you all are soon. I do, however, have a question. Do any of you have any experience, or know of any one that did UNT's post bac program? I applied to it and to the MPH in hopes of bringing up some low grades from many years ago and to provide a "bridge" to medical school. I wanted get some stats about the students admitted into that program. Also wanted to see how it went for the post bac folks. I would love to know

Dude, where is everybody? Since i dont feel like studying for medical spanish or finish writing my 16pg paper, I decided to bring the thread back to life! SO anybody know when we get all our financial aid stuff? I quit my job last semester, so I have no money now 😱 and will be in need of some quick! anyone know about loan consolidation?

Hey you, hmm I think as long as you fill out your FAFSA you should be ok. I would advise you to call the admission office for money, but I dont think they'll be very helpful. Are you going to TCOM for fall of 2006? I noticed that you go to baylor and I went there too. Anyone else from Baylor who's going to TCOM this fall?

I will be graduating in May and starting TCOM this fall 😀

I know 2 other ppl so far going to TCOM from baylor...probably more that I have not heard of yet

oh yeah, i did not take out a full private loan, so I still have money left that I can borrow. I am wondering if it would be a smart move to take the rest of the money...I think so cause I need to put a down some money to reserve an apt for next year. Not working has been fun, but financially stressful 😳 as usual, the baylor financial aid office is not helping me...

I saw that there are some people coming from Baylor so i thought id ask.. any UTD people starting? The only person I know is a friend of mine..

Hey Greeneyes, I'm in the current post bac class...and I can tell you there are MANY UTD people. I'm not sure why they aren't posting on here. But anyways, for Baylor folks (as well as folks from other school) who are wondering where to live and stuff of that nature here in Fort Worth, I'll be more than happy to tell or show you guys the places close to school. I'm living in a fairly crappy place and that's because I only had 3 hours to find a place the day I looked for one and I had no idea where anything is. My roomate for next year is from TCU, so he's also pretty familiar with the city.

And to MoxieDO: I'm not sure about taking out more loans, but if you can't make ends meet, you would have to do it. I think there are many people at tcom who are living fairly decently (not starving) through their loans. I'm sure you'll eventually be able to pay it all off once you start working.

You can also consult the financial aid office at UNTHSC-TCOM. I'm sure they would be willing to help.

.

I looked during Spring Break. I kinda liked Bowie APTs cause they were cheap, big, and really close to the school. However, no one seemed to live there...place looked empty, but maybe ppl left for spring break? if you heard anything about them please help! I am waiting for housing fair before making a definite decision, but I plan on at least reserving a place during/after Spring Fling. I heard there are more places down Hulen, but I didnt look at them cause I did not know about them at the time.

I dont know of any apartment named Bowie Apt...Camp Bowie has logs of apartments off of it. But anyways, yes Hulen does have a few. Actually, the one i'm living at next year is on Hulen. They're just as nice and alot cheaper than the ones I found on Camp Bowie, if everything else is equal.

Hey for those in the rural med track …does anyone know how much more we have to cough up for tuition?>? Grrrrrrrrrrrr 😡

Hey UserNameNeeded... did you get your official phone call about the two day rural experience.... we are going to spend the night in the community to get the real feel for rural med 😱 and of course I got the whole be prepared to work at least 12 hours straight. So the whole med school experience begins.......... I just pray time flies when I'm there and that I'm soon back in my cozy bed instead of the nursing home bed or whatever other community bed they want to put me on. 🙁 🙁 I may not get any sleep but according to other med students I better get used to it. :barf:

I got an email to call Ms./Mrs./Dr. (I hate not knowing what to call people in academic settings) Adams to set that up yesterday. But I'm just way to busy with stuff right now to be concerned about that. I'll deal with it next week.

So what did they tell you? Are all of us doing it together or is it gonna be individually? I hope it's in July and not far away from Dallas.

--

And, this is a general question for all TCOMers: When do they start disbursing money? I wonder if they could give it to us (or at least have us choose the lender and borrow the money) before the first of July. Rates are going up hugely after that!

I'm wondering about that as well. Have you called the Fin. Aid department? This is my first experience with the whole FAFSA thing, so i'm in the dark about it all. So did you all send in your questionaire to them?

Yeah, sorry, this is my first time with this also. I cant help you there.

If you have not completed the FAFSA, you need to do so ASAP!!! For specific questions about your class or yourself, call or email the financial aid office. Asking on SDN is a good way to get well-meaning, but incorrect information and most people can't afford to make a mistake when it comes to $$$$$$$$$$.

Yeah, i'm just lazy, can you do it for me? 🙂 Just kidding, i'm going to call them soon. And, I did do the FAFSA as soon as I got my acceptance. So, the rate is going up to 6.8%!?! Rediculous.

Hey UNN... I'm not too sure about the whole having to pay more but since we are taking more classes I thought that we may have to pay more...of course we also get more with fin. aid.

No we are not doing it together... we are doing it close to where we are currently only if they have an affiliated clinic in the area otherwise you may have to do some traveling.

You have to have it done before July and you need to schedule it as soon as you can. I scheduled mine for June. So far this is all I know.

Howdy!

I finally joined this SDN site thingy! Woo hoo.

I'll be at TCOM in the fall as well and wanted to join in on the pre-game discussions. I'm in Dallas at the moment but have started looking for a place close to campus. I'm hoping to make it to Spring Fling too.

Anywhoo...hope everyone is doing well.

TCOM does classes by system - that means all the courses dealing with a system are on one test (aside from anatomy lab practicals). Cardiovascular system tests for year one include anatomy, physiology, embryology, histology, etc - but all about the CV system.

Tests are not necessarily in "blocks" but all the different information about a given system are included together.

Make sense? If not, it will soon enough 🙂

We were pre-MSI not too long ago as well, you know... some of us might even remember it!

Happy Easter everyone!!!

This year, with my class, 10% of each exam became cumulative. So when we move from system to system, important questions from previous systems are included going forward. It works out pretty well and the exam are tough but fair.

I went to the financial aid office last week and they told me they are going to start getting students' data from FASFA and start working on our financial aid packages. Many grants and scholarships are first come first serve, so it is very importmant to get your stuff in early. You also need to turn in all necessary forms and your 2005 1040 tax return to the TCOM financial aid office if you have not done so already.

What's a rotating internship, and where do you eventually end up if you go down that route?

Thanks for the heads-up! I mailed them today and they said basically the same thing. In May, they plan on contacting everyone to setup an appointment to sign the award letters. Disbursement will happen a week before school starts. Does everyone have to send in a copy of their 2005 1040? The lady I emailed didn't mention that. She just mentioned to me that I need to snail-mail in the questionaire form.

Hey, for those who are wondering, I think the post-bac class for next year has been accepted and announced. Good luck to everyone!

Unless something has changed from last year, you do not need to mail a copy of your taxes.
