Hello everyone!

A little background...I'm trying to do as much as possible until my obligation with the Air Force ends next May. I will apply to post-bac programs for the 2008-2009 cycle.

This fall I have the opportunity to teach a night math course at my local community college. Alternatively, I could take an EMT certification course (at the same CC) at nights.

Is being an EMT a big highlight on an application? Alternatively, is it more noteworth than teaching?

I guess I could do one in fall and the other in spring. From a nontrad perspective, what are your thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

EMT is only a highlight on an application if you actually USE IT. Lots and lots of premeds take EMT thinking it will look great on an app when in reality if you take it and never use it, it's obvious app padding to an adcom.

Based solely on your post, I would say your reasons for taking an EMT class are mainly for your application. Teach instead.

Teaching gives you an immediate plus.

The EMT course only gets you halfway there -- you still have to get an EMT job and put the license to work before it's a plus. How difficult will it be to get a job once you're licensed? The market where I'm at is saturated and it took me 18 months to get on with the ambulance service.

I'd probably teach and then volunteer at a hospital to get my "smelling patients" requirement. That'll be the highest yield.

Don't get me wrong. EMT is cool and a plus, but it's not the best "bang for your buck."

Thank you both! 👍

I am an army non trad. I agree with the emt and getting a job comment. it is hard to get on some services...plus they tend to work 24/off 48, not really the best for the class schedule. stick with the teaching. since you're military try to get your medic to get you some volunteer time at the clinic/hospital or go with the red cross, they work close with the military and always one at each base. before you get out, take some military medical correspondence courses, they may give you college elective credit towards post bacc.
