teeth whitening scams

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is there any particular reason "the pre-dents" should be aware of this?

I meant to ask if students not yet in dental school were aware of these scams. I posted a similar question on the Dental board asking what they taught about this in dental school.

I apologize for posting similar threads on multiple forums. I hoped to pose my question in such a way that would create unique discussions in the dental and predental forums. To the moderators, you may decide to delete one of these threads.

But back to my question, did anyone know about these dental scams?

I don't know why you have to ask if anyone is aware of these dental scams. It's more like, "Is anyone aware of internet scams?" As if I would trust a review site called sarahswhiteteeth, or teethwhiteningreviews for that matter. Why would anyone make a review site for teeth whitening products? Money, that's the only reason. It's not some guy's hobby to (allegedly) try 100 teeth whitening products and then tell you which ones are really good. The whole premise is ridiculous.

I asked my question because I wanted to share what I found with the most amount of people as possible. I tried posting it on multiple forums, and got a nice warning as a result😳. I think it's important to share scam awareness because there will always be people out there who fall for them. I don't expect anyone on these forums to fall for these scams, but I do hope that members of this forum will share this news with people outside the dental world. If all of our patients waste away their money on scams, they'll never be able to afford real dental care.

You're welcome for the reply PM, Goetz. No worries about these "Dental scams." In dental school you'll likely have a few different Evidence Based Dentistry courses, in which you will probably learn how to educate your patients about why we do what we do as dentists. For example, here at VCU this past semester we had a role-play exercise in clinic where we were consulting a patient (actor) regarding the work he/she needed. One of the scenarios involved a patient that wanted to know why her periodontal disease couldn't be "Cured" in 2 weeks using the methods described in her "Internet research." It was a good exercise and, unfortunately, a very realistic scenario.

It doesn't cost a lot of money to whiten your teeth. Less than $10 for one full treatment. I do it all the time.
