You think anyone in the history of medicine ever interviewed for their residency position via teleconference? (iChat/Skype/Cisco/etc... etc...)

Would make sense in this economic climate no?

Seems like an interesting idea. Of course, medicine is populated with old folks who cling to tradition like a security blankie. And then there are those that are just plain old and would have great difficulties getting the teleconference communication link to work 😛

It probably can be done, but much of the interview process (for you) is meeting the residents and "checking out the place" which can't be done via skype.

Stony Brook Anesthesiology is doing interviews by Skype; it invites a limited number for the on-site interviews, and many more are offered the chance to see the tour on-line, and then interview with the program director via Skype.

I've not heard very favorable things via word-of-mouth on the interview trail, with inablility to talk with residents and missing the "gut feeling" cited as concerns.
