Future docs and docs,

What are your thoughts on Telemedicine? This is an area i have a very strong interest in. I will be part of this change at some point in my career especially with my strong interest in working in 3rd world countries..

Check out this link for the latest remote monitoring technologies http://www.informationweek.com/mobi...ing-technologies/d/d-id/1110968?page_number=1

Also the government is definitely recognizing the change

All these big IT/Networking companies like CISCO are creating telemedicine products

Online Medical Exams platform. I don't care for Dr. Phil but it's still an interesting company.

I'm just curious what you folks think about Telemedicine- like it or hate it.

Interesting concept, but I think it can reduce the ability to diagnose some things. Our psych department uses it, and we have a lot of follow-ups that are done via the main telemedicine unit at our hospital (which med students aren't really exposed to, so I only know about it due to my work in other areas). If you take a very broad definition of telemedicine, I think it can be a great tool for follow-up... using it to track the blood sugars of newly diagnosed diabetics, for instance, and make adjustments to insulin regimens.

Telemedicine is definitely part of the future, but we can't yet know to what extent. I know of Dr. Ozcan's work over at UCLA. He's designed some pretty neat accessories for Android phones to be able to take blood tests, and test for allergies etc. This becomes extremely useful in rural villages where an Android phone is literally the most powerful computer available in a 10 mile radius.
