Hey guys....the lady who is in charge of the MPH program at Temple was in Costa Rica for a month, so I got a chance to meet with her down here and we had a great discussion....it was more like talking to a friend than a supervisor...anyways, we talked a lot about the new MPH/DMD program, and some things came up which I thought might interest you to possibly join this program.

Basically, Im interested in international dentistry....so my biggest concern was not to be able to get an international experience with the MPH....at Columbia, this was a for sure "NO", because Columbia's MPH program is very rigid and very urban based....John Hopkins is the place to be for international health, but they dont have a dental school.....however, it was very comforting to find out that Temple's program is very flexible and very supportive of my interests.

I always wanted to do my MPH practicum in another country, and Temple will give me full support just as long as I can find a valid supervisor...I was interested in doing some work in Africa or India, and Temple's Public health dept. has some contacts in Cameroon and South Africa, so getting a supervisor is very likely in those countries, If I choose to go there....Having experience in South Africa would look so much better than a fancy Ivy League degree from Columbia.....

EVEN BETTER...Temple dental is also being very supportive of me, and since I'd be doing my public health practicum in another country, I would also be able to satisfy much of my clinical requirements overseas as well...isnt that awesome? So, between 3rd and 4th year, instead of being in Philly doing your clinical requirements, you could be in South Africa doing it....

Of course, nothing is written in stone yet, but the wheels are in motion....Hopefully, Ive convinced some of ya to join me!!! By the way, did I mention that Temple Dental pays for your MPH, so its free!! 😀

Dr. BadVibes-I think you knock the ivy league way too much. Maybe the reason why Columbia's MPH program is so rigid is because they seek to address to public health concerns of one of large metropolitan cities. I don't think this is evil. It is a program that is designed for people who don't share your experience for the public health challenges inherent in under-developed countries.

Dude...when did I say that Columbia's program was evil? When I went to my interview at Columbia, I met with a faculty member of the DMD/MPH program, and they were doing a lot of interesting stuff in the Harlem area......All i said was that for someone like me interested in international health, Columbia's program was not allowing for any flexibility. On top of the fact that the class sizes at Columbia are huge for the MPH, and its basically a MPH factory....not my cup of tea...I am past the days of my undergrad when I was just a simple student number....i like faculty contact and to be mentored......

but I did say that it is urban-based, so if this were your interest, Columbia would be great for that, but this was not my interest, and Columbia was not allowing me to branch out of the urban sector.

Only reason I took the time to mention that whole fancy ivy league crap, was because many people who are interested in international public health seem to think that the name of your degree is more important...even I was told that if I wanted to work for the WHO or PAHO, that I should goto Columbia solely for its name, but obviously this is a misconception, because you wouldnt be getting any international exposure at Columbia so how could you work for the WHO??? Now John Hopkins, or the London School of Tropical Health....those are some quality, top-notch schools who deserve the prestigous names attached to them when it comes to International health.

You got me interested, I would like a chance to see the world and fullfill an mph degree. Its free even sweeeter. What up in Costa rica, good weather and fine babes I hope.

Edknarf, I think you're reading into badvibes statement way too much.

adios

Hey HD....you should check if Marquette offers the dual degree...beware of the free statment though, because many schools dont offer to pay for it. For instance, Columbia and Tufts wanted to tack on an extra 30K for the degree....go figure, eh! Ill be making less in public health, but paying more for my education???

I think NOva offers the MPH for free......Arizona is an amazing school for this field, because its whole philosophy is based on public health and the public health certificate is included with tuition and mandatory I believe (gavin, confirm).....UNC has the MPH as well and is rated one of the best. I think most schools offer this degree.....Remember, it really doesnt matter where you got your degree from, its more the experience you get that is more important....so look for a school that is flexible and is willing to cater to your individual interests....
