Hello everyone,
So I'm thinking of scribing part time, just for the span of my gap year ( 12 months or less). The thing is , I know scribe America has a minimum two year commitment. In person, some students have told me you can get temporary scribe positions through a hospital, that can be 12 months or less. I can't seem to find this kind of stuff online- and, instead of just banging around for longer- can anyone here help me? Do I call the hospital directly?

Their commitments are non enforceable

They can’t force anything on you and some try to say you will be blacklisted from medical schools which is also BS.

Has anybody actually done this? I'm afraid of doing something like this unless I'm sure that it would work.

People do it all the time. My friend didn’t like it and only worked 4 months. Try to do about a year though.

But what about the positions the hospitals offer directly? Do you guys know anything about how to ask about those? I've heard they're btter than third party hiring companies like scribe america.

Yeah they’re fine depending on hospital. And they understand most college students are only looking for 1-2 years. I’ve never stayed at one place more than 2 years.

They will also tell you that if you quit early then you can’t work anywhere else as a scribe for 2 years. Depending on the state, that’s also BS. Some states, like California, will absolutely not allow ScribeAmerica to enforce that rule. So ScribeAmerica would be SOL in those states.

Especially since a restriction like that has no legal ground.

That's whay my mother was telling me! She said " it doesn't seem legal that they can do that!" and I was like " Well I don't wanan take my chances , you never know..."

Usually a restriction like that would need a legitimate basis for existing. ScribeAmerica would have to prove that they are being harmed directly because you are working for the competitor.

Most examples where this is enforced is in software and law. Because if a law firm employee quits and joins a competing law firm that is working on several of the same cases then the first law firm would be harmed. In software, for example, the innovative technologies and software developments being made can be shared with other companies. For example, if an Apple software executive were to quit and join Samsung, then Apple would be harmed because the employee is aware of Apple’s technology and software ideas and is now working for the competition.

ScribeAmerica is strictly a service, labor company. They train scribes and provide a service to hospitals and clinics around the country. It wouldn’t be harmed if someone quit and started working as a scribe elsewhere because a scribe only offers a labor service, not an innovative one.

It’s best to look at the state you are in. I’m in California and it’s defiently not enforced here (I would know because I actually started working as a scribe elsewhere right after I quit ScribeAmerica).

Yea I quit after 6 months, there’s actually a pretty high turnover. Hospitals usually outsource to outside companies do you have to go through companies like Scribe America

Most of the scribes who I’ve worked with worked for less than a year. They cannot force you to work for 2 years lol. Just last month, 2 of the new hires quit during training...

A lot of ScribeAmerica trainers and chief scribes treat the newbies very inappropriately. That’s just what happens when you give pre meds a grain of power.

This is why ScribeAmerica has such heavy turnover.

Yeah, that's another negative thing I've heard about ScribeAmerica, so that's why I'm thinking I'll hunt down a position at a hospital.

Guys- on the application it says how long are you willing to commit ( long term) and it says if you say less than a year you will be screened out. Can I put a year or is that like...bluffing? Idk, I'm just nervous.

I applied regularly through the website and clearly stated that I would only be available for 1 year max. I reiterated this during my interview, and was subsequently hired without issue. I'm sure you'll be fine. As others previously stated, it's a high turn over job.

So putting "less than a year" wont actually get me screened? thanku ☺️ I was worried about being "dishonest" lol

If you're competing for one spot with other qualified applicants it may put you lower in their consideration. Depends on who's looking at applications really. For my site which received a lot of applications, I didn't consider applicants with less than a year commitment.

But someone could put 1 year and then leave after 8 months and...who would stop them.I mean I know of ppl quitting jobs when they get into med school so it must not be that rare but still..
