I've had the worst semester ever. I withdrew from one pre req and am doing very poorly in the other. The semester is coming to a close and instead of sitting around being sad like I have for the past few days I want to find a solution. I'm usually a fairly good student, I was just dealing with some personal issues this semester and it's far too late to turn it around. I plan on resting for a month and then retaking the two disaster pre-reqs this summer. I'm going to be a junior next year but I don't plan on applying to medical school until after graduation. I finished all of my GE's and only have pre-reqs and science electives left. Most people have their bad semesters in their freshman year, I guess mine just came a bit late. Is this enough to hinder my chance at getting into a DO school? My EC's are still solid. It's just my science GPA that I'm worried about.

It depends. How bad? Why bad? How much does it impact your stats? Can you spin a story as to what you learned from it for adcoms?

Well since I withdrew from one class, it's really only one bad grade so it's bringing my science gpa from a 3.3 to a 3.1. I'm also very worried about the W on my application. I only took it to avoid dipping my sGPA into the 2.00's. I'll have to tell adcoms the truth, I started this semester at a new university and was feeling very sad and unmotivated. Instead of seeking help I tried to work through it alone and failed. I also blamed my "tough" professors instead of rising to the occasion and figuring out the root of the problem.

One 'W' on your application doesn't mean much and probably would not even be referenced by adcoms. Nobody asked why I retook organic chemistry 4 years after the first time I took it even though I passed the first time.

Honestly, I don't think that would be enough to destroy your chances, and that if you can work hard to do well on your remaining classes during your junior and senior year, you have more than enough to overcome a single withdrawal and bad grade. If you're worried about one bad grade (from a withdrawal) during your sophomore year affecting your chances for med school, well...I had a much more disastrous academic record than you during my sophomore year, and in the end, none of the schools I interviewed at really focused too much on my failures. Just be honest and own up to it, get over it, and continue to do well - you should be good!

One bad semester isn't going to kil you, but the inability to seek help for dealing with problems will.

Go see your schools' counselor or therapist, and ace everything from now on.
