So I just got my MCAT score and got an M on the writing section (didn't bother to prepare for it at all) ... is this gonna look bad at all? I got a 13 on verbal if this makes a difference. Thx.

how can you be so good at verbal but so bad at writing? did you guess alot on the verbal? did you jsut blank out on the essay...

Eitherway i don't think it should affect you... unless it raises a flag of you being lucky on the verbal (but i highly doubt it).

Yeah, I think you'll be fine. I guess someone might ask you a question about it in an interview, but I think it's easily explained. It's a high pressure situation and there really isn't much time to edit and rewrite anything. It's no crime if you can't crap out a golden egg when there's a gun to your head.

I actually got worse (L). Granted I only have two M.D. interviews so far, I have yet to see if this affected my overall application too much on the allopathic side (the D.O. schools obviously don't care, 4 acceptances).

Write really awesome essays for your schools and that should help eliminate any suspicion.

I got an M as well, and I'm wondering the same thing.

After getting my score I looked up the averages and thought it was great, then someone told me the scale was going the other way... obviously I wasn't on top of that section.

I blanked on my second essay. Totally blanked. It was crap. I think my first one was pretty good. I got an M. We shall see what happens. So far i am 1 interview, 3 holds and 1 rejection. Applied late because my brother died in April. Applied anyway because life goes on and I didn't want to sit around a year when I spent so many years working towards this. Hopefully this year will be better than last year.

I'd trade having a J in writing for my score (P) if it meant having a 13 in verbal.

Ok, maybe not a J. How about an L? 😀

Honestly, no one cares about writing. They only actual writing you might ever do in med school is a script (and it's almost illegible anyway!)

I got an N, and I hope it won't be a big deal. 12 in VR.

i got an N...and got in to top tier schools!

Writing is actually one of my strengths but I could not think of any examples at all! I was actually giggling in the exam room cause my essays were so bad. i guess it did provide some comic relief to an otherwise pretty tense situation. But who's laughing now? Not I. Oh well, hopefully things will pan out.

TopDoc: my condolences to you. Best of luck with apps!

I got an M too sadly...wtf is what I'm thinking. My essay definitely wasn't below average. Only got 11 verbal though...not 13.

Great point. Most schools don't give the writing section much thought. If your essays are of good quality any doubts should be cleared easily.

From my understanding, WS on the MCAT is all about following the directions. I wrote 2 very dry essays, but I broke it down into 3 paragraph format, provided (lame) examples, and stayed on point. Result: R.

Perhaps you didn't follow the definition, counterpoint, decide when it applies directions. Or maybe you mis-read an essay question.

Either way, it probably won't make any difference whatsoever.

I did this, yet I find it hard to write an essay about ridiculousness that I care nothing about. My essays weren't too convincing.

You guys are lame.

Nobody really cares about the WS, unless you got like a J or K.

I got an M also with my 33 MCAT... with an 8 VR. I also have 4 interviews so far.

My advice, just write a really good personal statement and secondary essays and show them you can write and are proficient in English if you have that low VR also.

13 on VR! or even 11 on VR! DO NOT SWEAT!

It's great the US schools "seemingly" don't place much emphasis on the WS. In Canada, many schools either have WS cut-offs (P or Q) or will red-flag you.

I got a "K" in the writing section, and just got my first acceptance yesterday.
