Tetanus immune globulin

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
On halloween! although making a costume for an "tetnaus immune GOBLIN' would prove to be hard!

Question-- when would you use it??

ummm - I would recommend using it when u have a patient that has a c. tetani - antibiotics will only take care of the infection but the tetanospasmin will still remain and cause death if not bound with the Ig

It can be used for prevention also. You would use TIG (or antitoxin) in a person with a serious (high risk) wound who is not fully immunized, or in any AIDS patient with a tetanus-prone wound regardless of immunization status. Tetanus immunization can be given at the same time.

Serious=wounds contaminated with dirt, soil, feces, saliva, puncture wounds, or those with devitalized tissue, e.g. avulsions, from missiles, crushing, frostbite, burns.

Information is from the Red Book.
