Texas A&M Accepted for Class of 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm excited to have you as a future classmate. Congrats again.

Thanks buddy...me too. I have a question for yall....are the tablets they mention in the email mandatory? I'm just joking. I do have a serious question that I can't find the answer to....does anyone know what the first day of class is? I guess a better question would be when the first day of activities are (orientation, etc)

I remember reading something that said we should expect to assume the position in late July.

Haha....I'll start streching my hamstrings so I can bend over further.

yay! i'm so excited! it'll be nice to put some faces to these screen names. 😀

Did you all find out about your acceptance to A&M by e-mail, snail mail, or phone?? Just wondering... I am still in waiting mode post-interview... 🙁

AggieSean, Mulliewins et al: Where can I find a list of the textbooks used for first-year and second-year classes? I have a biochemistry and a cell bio textbook that I'd like to sell, unless they're the same ones used by TAMHSC classes. Do you think it's necessary to even have textbooks? (It will be my fourth semester of biochemistry...) Thanks!

if you absolutely are set on a tablet, Lenovo is giving 25% off of their X61 tablet with code USPX61TABLETDEC15

I spec'd one out pretty decently and it came out to ~$1300, which is a $1100 savings.

That information will be given to you in a packet mailed out in the Spring (you're going to hear this line a lot). The biochem texts we used were Lippincott's Biochemistry and Mark's Basic Medical Biochemistry. We didn't use a cell bio book, but some book by Albert's was referenced (NOT required) a lot.

Regarding the necessity of books, it all depends on how you learn. If you learn by going to class and reading notes, book won't be so important. If you loathe reading notes and listening to lectures, then books are for you. Personally I'm a book learner. I find it easier to read a well thought-out chapter than fumbling through some dude's lecture notes. But that's just me.🙂

Is the biochem book the Baskic Medical Biochemistry book? I am trying to decide which books I need that I still have. I have a picture anatomy atlas that I used all the time by Rohen....heard of it? Useful? I have Netters and heard it is used pretty frequently. What about a physiology book?

I also have diagnostic equipment...do you need this or can I ebay it?

Also, I wanted to throw this out there. I know we are still a little ways away from finding out campus assignments, etc, but if you think you want Temple and want to look at housing, etc....feel free to PM me and I'll give you my number. I can show you places that might be what you are looking for. Army also knows his way around pretty well, but I think he is still out of state.

Oh, and when do they send you the first packet after your acceptance?

Unfortunately, I'm not accepted yet. But, I interviewed rather late (Dec. 11), and we were informed that we would hear back by Dec. 31. I know it's only a day away, but I just wanted to know if it's a lost cause. That is, have people that interviewed this late been sent acceptances yet or not? Do I still have a shot and is Dec. 31 the day Dec. 11/18 interviewees hear back?

Congrats, sir! I've been out of touch and hadn't heard.

Some M2s will give/sell their books to M1s, others can be acquired online, etc. Don't go rush out and buy any. However, in answer to your questions...Biochem is the Marks' Basic Biochem. I have a pdf version that someone sent me, as well as a hard copy my M2 buddy sold me cheap. There is a new edition coming out, but no one really cares what edition you have.

Netter's is a must (we can get those for free), Rohen is very useful. KEEP YOUR DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT!!! I just bought mine. We are required to have it for second semester.

Physiology we just use class notes and BRS - there is no assigned textbook. Also, all the books are available in the LRU/LRC, so you can use them in there whenever needed.

Happy New Year everyone!

Thank you. At times I still wonder if it is all a joke. I still haven't received my first packet yet, so it isn't real yet. But....I am excited all the same. Thanks for the info. I will definitely hang on to the diagnostic equipment. I spent over a grand on that stuff....I would hate for it to go to waste. How do you get Netters for free? I am in desperate need of a new copy...my old one has been used so much the pages are falling out.

I hope you and everyone else have a great New Year as well.

Some organization (maybe the AMA) gives you one if you fill out a credit card application. You don't have to activate it, just submit. I didn't go that route as my M2 buddy gave me one, but that's all there is to it!

We can also get free iPod flash cards (Netters) for joining something else. Many of our books are also available as pdf files. Don't know the legitimacy of them, but they are there for the asking!

Happy New Year!

So, I'm trying to decide if A&M is the place for me coming up on Jan. 15th, and I had a couple concerns. So, I'll air them and I welcome anyone to respond to them so I/we can all be better informed. BTW, I'll probably do all 4 years at Temple.

First, it seems like everyone drives to campus for class from their respective homes/lives. Do the students tend to spend an ample amount of time in the library/learning centers collaborating with each other and study grouping, or do people tend to head home and study on their own? If I recall correctly, someone posted that a good portion of Temple students are married, and I'm worried that this might detract from the campus involvement that I'm looking for.

Secondly, I know rent is super cheap in Temple, and this is a big draw for me, but does that rent belie the safeness or lack thereof in these neighborhoods? Do yall feel safe in the neighborhoods that have the cheap rent?

Are there certain areas that most medical students live, or is everyone pretty spread out over the Temple/Belton area?

Being that Scott and White is a level 1 trauma center, and that I'm interested in emergency medicine, have any of yall noticed this to be beneficial for learning experiences? Or do the 3rd and 4th years end up doing paperwork for the busy residents/attendings?

In yall's experience, has attaining research positions been difficult at the campus in Temple, because I know that it is not stressed. Are there a ton of students fighting for a limited number of research opportunities? Would College Station be a better place for me if I were wanting to do some research?

Thanks for any response, It just seems super difficult to pick the next 4 years of my life with the limited information the schools give us.😕

Good questions. I am undecided about A&M as well. I have prematched at A&M, UTMB, and TCOM, and A&M is definitely the favorite out of those, but I am not sure who to list for the match. I really liked UTSW. I was impressed with UT-H but not with the city. Living in Houston is pretty much a deal breaker. But I am unsure about San Antonio. I would be interested in hearing everyone else's opinons on San Antonio, especially their hospital compared with Scott and White.

Approximately 1/3 of the first years in Temple are married this year (I believe the number is 13 of 37). Some of us go home every evening, but there are plenty who spend their afternoons and evenings in the LRU, which is set up with study rooms and materials (it's on the 4th floor, and was renovated this fall, so you may not have seen it). It just depends on the individual. There are some people who study in groups, and some who don't. You'll find that anywhere.

Temple is reasonably safe - I don't know anyone who has had trouble with their housing. A couple of cars were broken into at S&W right after school started, but as soon as the high school year started, that stopped. There are several neighborhoods which are student-rich, as well as several apartment complexes. There are also people who live where there are no other students. I don't know that there is any "cluster" of students, particularly with the 1st & 2nd year classes, since they are quite small.

I live in a cheap area, and I don't feel unsafe at all.

I'm not sure about the EM stuff at the moment, but I know students definitely do stuff, not just paperwork. There are volunteer opportunities available for those who wish to, as well (I know of one guy in our class who volunteers at S&W), but first year you're really too busy to do much more.

There are plenty of research opportunities available in Temple. The whole building on the other side of the campus (where the gross lab is) is the Medical RESEARCH Building. There are summer opportunities and year-round (again, as time permits). Because you are not competing with other graduate students and post-docs in Temple the way you would be in CS, you'd probably get MORE opportunity and attention than you would in CS. All you have to do is ask, and you will be matched up.

Good questions. I am undecided about A&M as well. I have prematched at A&M, UTMB, and TCOM, and A&M is definitely the favorite out of those, but I am not sure who to list for the match. Seeing as how I am sitting in my house in San Antonio thinking about going back to Temple, I guess I'm qualified to answer this one! This time last year, I was DESPERATE to match to San Antonio, but I am so fortunate to be in Temple.

Advantages of A&M (Temple) over UTHSCSA:
- Class size. We have 37 in Temple this year. They're looking at 70 for next year. We know the faculty in Temple, and they know us. We also know our classmates very well, and have formed a very tight bond. UTHSCSA has 220. You won't get the personal attention.
- Location/parking. 😉 I live about 10-12 minutes from UTHSCSA, and about 5 from S&W. By the time I park (which is free, by the way, and reasonably close), it is 12 minutes door-to-door in Temple. It would be 30 in San Antonio.
- Classes at UTHSCSA are scheduled from 8-5 almost every day. Check out their schedule online. At my interview last year, we were told that they had to scale BACK their classroom hours to keep the accreditors happy. At A&M, we grumble if we are in class from 9-3 more than 3 days in a week (our class schedules are also available online).
- S&W is much newer than University Hospital, and from what I have heard, the employees are much happier at S&W than at University. S&W is a major hospital with a teaching component, while University is more of a public hospital. The patient populations are different - people choose to go to S&W because of its reputation. In San Antonio, University is considered the place to go if you don't have insurance. The perceptions of the hospitals in the communities are TOTALLY different. I've lived in San Antonio for 20 years, and don't know anyone who has chosen to go to University for any reason. I have a friend who spent 8 days there after a major car accident last year (trauma), and she had no complaints. That is not the case in Temple - people seek to go to S&W from all over.

That being said, University sees a higher level of general pathology than S&W (a generally less healthful population), but in Temple we also do rotations at the VA, which has a similar pathology to University. Trauma-wise, in Temple you see more motor vehicle accidents, in San Antonio you see more shootings and assaults.

Advantages of UTHSCSA over A&M
- It is 145 miles closer to my house.🙁
- It is located in a big city, with the opportunities that has to offer. If you are interested in some specialty research, or an MD/DDS kind of thing, San Antonio may be better.
- Lectures are held all in one location. However, based on the lectures I attended at UTHSCSA last year during my interview, the lecture hall was so big and the lecturer so far away, it really didn't make any difference. Our lectures are all recorded and available on-line if you choose not to go.

Bottom line: would I go to UTHSCSA if I had the opportunity handed to me? Yes, but that's only because of my family situation. I may apply for a transfer next year (for 3rd year), but I'd honestly rather stay at A&M.

Ok...I am openly biased on this topic, but I will try to give an unbiased opinion on the things I am able to weigh in on. First, the rent in Temple. Yes, the cost of living here is pretty cheap. There are a ton of apartment complexes here in town...though there are some I wouldn't live in. You can find a very nice apartment for 500-600 bucks for a one bedroom that is in a very safe area. I have had some people PM me about apartments and living expenses in Temple...feel free to do the same. Point is...you can find somewhere you would want to live for cheap.

Second as far as the research opportunities go...one thing that is being overlooked is the bioscience district in Temple. This is one of a few in the state that has world renowned research going on. Not sure if yall have heard of him, but Dr. Art Frankel has his research lab here doing cancer research. They are about to add another research TEAM from Tulane doing regenerative medicine stuff. These are the types of things you typically find in large cities...but Temple is very cutting edge when it comes to medicine. I would HIGHLY suggest that if research is an area of interest to you that you come back and tour the research facilities. Within the hospital itself, I know for a fact that there are ample opportunities. My assumption is you just have to show interest in a topic, and you can be placed in the right situation for you.

On 3rd and 4th year situations: I haven't started school yet, so I will give you my anecdotal experiences. I knew most of last year's graduating class from A&M, and by all accounts, you are right in the thick of things when it comes to procedures. Of course they won't give you the scalpel or anything like that, but you also won't be shining the shoes of the attending. The ratio of faculty and residents to students is excellent from what I understand...so that always helps.

One last thing I will mention about Temple is it truly is a medical community. It is very rare that you have one of the largest hospitals in the nation in a town of 60-65,000. This community caters to the hospital...afterall, it is the largest employer in the area. I think if you decided to come here you would be pleasantly suprised by how much you enjoy the area.

As always, if you want more info, or have specific questions you would like answered via PM, please feel free to shoot me one.

I've been looking for a house. If any of you have any suggestions on some new/relatively cheap new neighbourhoods, would you please let us who are from out of town know?

Couple neighborhoods i've seen so far is,

Echo Vista by Ashford Homes
Heritage Village by Omega/Keila Builders

Seems like Omega/Keila is a bit more expensive than Ashford, and i can see why. But do any of you temple folks know abt the reputation of Ashford homes around temple? Echo Vista is shared by Ashford homes as well as Centex Homes, and i know a lot of ppl who have had complaints with Centex before (including in temple). But im not sure if that carries over to Ashford.

you could also look in Western Hills. the homes are a little older, but the neighborhood is safe and the prices should be really good.

What's the story with the little houses just north of the hospital and not more than a few miles away? When I went to Temple for a second look, I drove the neighborhood and saw several little two bedroom houses for lease in the 600/mo range. They weren't big, but were houses and had a yard. The neighborhood looked lower on the income scale, but I didn't think it looked unsafe.

pretty much all of Temple, with the exception of a couple of areas, are somewhat low-income.

were you on the same side of 35 as the hospital or on the other side? depending on how far you went, you were either down 31st or 1st going toward the high school/downtown, or you were in Western Hills. both are fine places to live, though I (for some reason) feel more comfortable in Western Hills than on the other side of the highway.

you could also look for places off of 57th, Midway, or Hickory. the area near Hickory is pretty nice.

Army hit the nail on the head. I am just giving a personal opinion, but I would not live in those houses. Some of those streets may be decent, but most I would not trust. Its not like there are gang wars going on or anything, but you could find a much safer area for probably the same price. I know it is tough when you are moving somewhere you know nothing about....but what I would do for those of you looking at coming here, is try to find some properties that you like, and shoot one of us a PM to get some feedback.

By the way, I still haven't received my first packet from A&M (from the Dec. 22nd acceptance batch). Has anyone else accepted that day seen anything?

I live on 11th, and I paid $63k for my house. These areas are really block-by-block. Many are fine, but some are a bit more shady. On my block there are 10 houses. I don't think any are rentals (that's a really good indicator of the "quality" of a block - you can find out fairly easily. PM me and I'll explain.) 3 houses are vacant (1 because the lady who'd lived there for 40 years died recently, 1 is a strange story, 1 I don't know the story), 1 is occupied by a family with kids, and the rest are single women. The next block down is not quite so stable. It just varies. If you find a realtor who knows the area, it can be a huge help.

I was also told to stay away from the houses near the hospital south of R because almost all have BAD foundation problems.😉 Otherwise, use your eyes and your gut. Let me know if you want more help - I know how hard it is doing this from far away!

Very good point. I made a blanket statement which I probably shouldn't have done. There are good streets within a neighborhood. CPA is right, a realtor will help you out tremendously. One of my very good friends is a realtor and would be more than happy to help anyone out....even if you are looking for a rental. Shoot me a PM and I will give you her number and email address.

Does anybody remember if by the time we matriculate, the curriculum is changed to block from the beginning? I think mullie told me that might be the case.

I've heard such rumors. I don't have the specifics however.

Sean, you hit 1,000!!! Congrats!

Is there anywhere that we can find the curriculum online? I have looked at the website and can't seem to find it.

So judging by that, it looks as though you will have a test roughly every other week, with an occasional week with two tests?

I bet you feel like you climbed Mt. Everest once Biochem is over. Not really looking forward to that class.

I have a question about financial aid. I am in somewhat of a unique situation in that I have a pretty large amount of student loan debt coming into med school. How does financial aid work through A&M (are they Stafford loans or do you have to find your own lender)? CPA and I think Sean....you guys are both married, right? I am a little concerned about having enough to live on due to a mortgage payment, newborn baby, etc. Any thoughts?

They are actually pretty generous with the loan money. It was all Stafford, I believe - some subsidized, mostly unsubsidized. Because I have had a real job in the past and my husband has a real job, my EFC (expected family contribution) was about 75-80% of my "expected cost of living" or whatever. I about panicked, since I have now TWO houses, two teenagers, and no job. A&M basically ignored the EFC (although it shows up on my sheet), and gave me the full amount in loans.

If you look under financial aid on the website, the cost of attendance amounts are on there - it varies by year. It should be ok.

Man, I have gone on a posting splurge today. Sorry to take up so much space. Thanks for the info. It looks like they will work with you if you need it....makes me feel better.

By the way, are you guys selling T-shirts?

1. Yes we were all glad when biochem was over. It's hard but you'll get through it.

2. Stop posting so much. Just kidding.

3. No we aren't selling shuuurtz right now but I'm sure we will sometime soon.

4. There are plenty of willing lenders ready to fork over money so you can pay it back with interest once you're a rich, evil, mean, greedy doctor.
