Texas A&M

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well, Rob, you have a point.... I definitely don't spend any extra time hanging around on campus or my dorm room. I'm in town long enough to attend classes and then I go back to the valley. and that's what I plan to do in pharm school.

I see my dorm has a temporary place to stay. It's definitely not my home. I just don't want to worry about paying for and keeping up an apartment over long breaks.

I don't plan on visiting Kingsville over the summers except of school-related meetings. I am hoping, praying, and crossing my fingers that most of my internships/preceptorships will be in the Valley.

I just hope this discussion isn't premature....I'll feel very very anxious if I don't hear from A&M next friday....Houston is a lot farther away from Edinburg.....

i just posted this twice I think... talk about the slow internet in the dorms.....

Does anybody have insight on how tight knit the pharmacy students are at Kingsville? Does everyone study together all the time and live together or do the students just go to school and drive back home on the weekends?

I would say it is probably a mixture. I know that if I get accepted I will be at home on the weekends, but mainly because I have to work.

Good Luck.

Can't we just wait till we are accepted before we jump into all the financial aid stuff? I really know nothing about this...

and the pharm students have their groups... I mean they have parties together when they can... but their are the old timers with wives and kids at home (no one take offense)... but over all they are pretty close... you have to be when you spend that much time together...

and where are you people from that you can drive back on weekends... it would take me a 25 gallon tank and a half = 43 gallons x 3.00 = $129 a week to do that. Not to mention adding 800+ miles a week to my mileage (oil and other maintainence).

I honestly think some of us are going crazy waiting so we are just trying to make casual conversation to pass the time.

I'll let the old timer comment slip this time.

I live in the valley and actually am considering driving back and forth everyday for classes. Right now, that seems to be the most realistic for my situation but considering the gas prices, that may change very soon. We've weighed a lot of pros and cons though and moving to Kingsville is not beneficial to us on many levels. But we'll make that decision once the acceptance letter comes. (trying to be positive)

Take care.

I am just worried because I think I saw that UT had a deadline of April 1st (and they are still interviewing people).

I assumed you must probably be from the valley mrspharmgirl, in which case you have a really good shot... you know you get extra point(s) for that. Even one point could put you up over 10-15 interviewers on THE LIST.

and I may start working on the FAFSA thing... im really bored at the moment... I watch old West Wing episodes in my spare time... in two days I've seen almost all of season 6... too much spare time i think.

You mentioned the extra points in the past... Were you told about this during your interview?

I thought that being from the valley would be a big plus too, but I got the impression that it's really not that important. I hadn't heard anything about getting extra points for it though. Maybe that will help compensate for the fact that my essay was horrible.

I know about the too much spare time. It's not that I don't have a ton of work to do, it's just that I can't seem to concentrate. Oh well, hopefully only one more week to go.

It sounds like A&M intends to do a lot of research in that pharmacy building. Does anyone know if they are going to have MS and/or PhD programs in the future, or if they will allow pharmacy students to become involved in heavy duty stuff if they choose research electives?

And... Where are the P1/P2 students? RobertZimmerman can't answer everything about the school.

I don't know about if they have any recent plans to make a Master/PhD program but I do remember Dr. Robertson telling me there were research opportunities available to interested students. I agree RobertZimmerman is awesome and is the czar of this Texas A&M thread.

I would give you the email of a p1 student but I lost the paper I wrote it on when I met him at my interview. I don't even remember his name and all I remember was that he was class president of the current pharmacy class. I'm sure someone else on here has to have his email!

You mentioned the extra points in the past... Were you told about this during your interview?

Extra points were not mentioned during the interview, but you can score "extra" points during the interview. The maximum possible score is still 25 points for the interview, but if you are deficient in one area but have a quality that seems to be particularly appealing, then you can make up for some other deficiency. Sources of bonus points include things such as

"a) has advanced degree (master’s and/or doctorate), b) resides in South Texas (from a county as defined by Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, c) attends/attended and/or completed pre-pharmacy requirements at Texas A&M University-Kingsville d) has pharmacy knowledge experience or exposure or has desire to become a pharmacy practitioner."
(p.87, http://pharmacy.tamhsc.edu/about/tamhsc-cop-selfstudy.pdf .)

Personally, I've always tended to think about the unpleasant scenarios in life, and in this case about what happens if I don't get into pharmacy school. There's the whole emotional aspect of it, that if you're somewhat expecting bad news, that it won't be as crushing when you hear about it. In the more practical sense, though, it also forces me to consider contingency plans, and to draw up details as to what I should specifically do if I don't get into pharmacy school this year.

On the flip side, though, if a lot of us are going to make presumptions on bad news, we might as well plan in advance for the good news. Dr. Robertson mentioned that we'll be getting mailings and an orientation that should walk us through the official school stuff, but when it comes to living in Kingsville, I don't think many of us have the slightest clue as to what's happening. And, so, it's entertaining and a bit reassuring to read about what everyone else is thinking about what they'll be doing in Kingsville, even if it's presumptuous.

As for Financial Aid, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot on the website about the topic. Many thanks, RobertZimmerman, for finding that FAFSA school code link. That was exactly what I was looking for. A lot of schools require FAFSA information before awarding scholarships to any student, though there's not much for us to do for scholarships. Of the four scholarships available from the school, three of them require being a resident of South Texas. One of those three is directed specifically towards Texas A&M - Kingsville students. The fourth scholarship is available for senior students with an interest in retail pharmacy. Still, filling out the FAFSA form is pretty easy and is a good idea for anyone entering any kind of school.

Well, we've got less than a week left (supposedly) before we start hearing about how well we truly did on our interviews.

--Garfield3d

P.S. I always felt that the later seasons of the West Wing were pretty weak. They were still entertaining to watch, but the flow, dialogue, and tempo of the show really changed after the first couple of seasons.

Garfield3d... you get the award for the longest posts!!! 😛

One question I forgot to ask at my interview day and couldn't find on the website was how much is tuition? I know graduate schools is Texas are dirt cheap compared to the rest of the nation, but it would nice to know how much it is per semester, plus the cost of books and equipment etc. Anyone have any input on this?

This is a link that has some other links to charts and stuff... I really never found much sense in it http://www.tamhsc.edu/education/catalog/intro/tuition/index.html.

On the old website (before the school's website was lumped in with the TAMHSC site) there was a cool little calculator thing that would give you useful numbers. But it vanished when they switched. I'm sure its comparible to other Texas schools though.

And did someone call me a czar? I didn't really like the student president guy, compared to the other students I've met he seemed pretty lame. I too am surprised that out of aobut 140-150 students none of them are active here. Maybe that will change next year...

As to the later West Wing seasons. Going through them as rapidly as I have been, you really notice a change in filming style (camera habits/tactics). I don't mind them... the characters are already fully developed from the early seasons... I hate when shows redevelop old characters for new viewers (WW doesn't), I would have liked Alan Alda to win though...

If I get in, I'm going to stay at least a little active here and help next year's applicants. Probably several of us will.

Since its getting close to gameday, are they going to email or send a letter to inform us of their decision? If its a letter, is it a thick envelope or thin envelope based on what some of you may have heard from current students?

We are supposed to receive an email first (I think) and then a letter arrives shortly afterwards via DHL. Whatever the size of the letter, it will be an acceptance - they don't send rejection letters.

actually at the interview Dr. Robertson said a&m will NEVER send any papers to anyone...ever. he said everything is done via email and that they are a paperless school.

that's what i remember anyways!😀

When I was there, he said that they don't send rejections, but they do send acceptance information through DHL. You'll get some kind of postcard to sign and mail back in stating whether you accept or decline their offer.

yeah that is what I was told as well... we should get a postcard through DHL

you're kinda right. you only get two papers the whole time you're there. One is your acceptance letter/postcard and the other is your diploma 🙂

I was feeling good about A&M, but now I'm worrying... What if my interview wasn't as good as I thought it went? What if they hate my essay for some reason? What if living in South Texas is worth a ton of points?

PULL YOURSELF TOGETHER MAN!!! *Achilleus slaps Knick

For all its worth.. I didn't think I did so well in any of my interviews. Honestly, I think it really comes down to personality. If you show them who you really are.. I think you'll be fine. As long as you didn't sweat bullets and BS everything you said, I think you're in. Plus the essay is judged only on grammer and your writing style, not on content (The UH Essay was graded on grammer and all that plus you're critical thinking). And living in South Texas isn't worth a ton of points. Don't worry so much. Just breatheeeeeee

Honestly, I would've like to have attended A&M... I really think they have a great program with room to expand in different directions. Many older, more established schools just do the same thing every year. A&M has the ability to diverge from that and move into areas of pharmacy that have recently sprung up or will spring up in the next few years. They are a new program so they are able to pursue such endeavors... which is really awesome!!! But I think its the whole South Texas move that steered me away. Like I said before, I'm really used to the big city. I find comfort in a city like Houston or Dallas... but that's just me. Others are the complete opposite while others don't mind either one. I just wasn't ready to move to a smaller/quieter city like Kingsville or Amarillo (hence the reason I declined Tech - but not the only reason)

I'll say this in advance: if I do get rejected, er, not accepted by A&M, I'm going to take this one well - I'll truly believe that it was entirely my fault.

Most of my anger toward UT was because they don't play a fair, consistent game (eg, they tell some people they didn't get in for not having pharmacy experience, but they let in certain people without any at all). I don't believe that I'll ever know the whole story of where I went wrong with them or how much of the rejection was truly my fault.

If I don't get in anywhere I'll reapply to A&M, but I'm not going to waste money on UT.

Hey Knick....

For what it's worth, I had a layover in Houston this week, and while in the airport (for 6 hours), I turned all the UT shot glasses upside down and unfolded all the 'Hook 'em Horns' t-shirts, in your honor.

;-)

Ha ha, thanks!

I'd use my "saw 'em off" avatar again, but I don't want to upset anyone.

What are the other reasons for declining tech then?

Do you have any other apps out?

suppose the above non-acceptance happens... I would definitely find some new LORS. It would seem someone screwed you.

The only thing I won't like about A&M is that I will lose my Aggie deniability. Im not much on the UT v A&M thing. Unless the outcome affects another team of interest BCSwise.

I really hope they get the emails out on Fri... (my interview email did come on a Fri)... if not that will be a long weekend wait till Mon.

Oh god dont tell me some of you are actual aggies? I was hoping that since the pharmacy school is a graduate program, I wouldn't have to put up with all that "T.U., sips, saw em off" garbage. I think Aggies are the worst fanbase ever....lack class and common courtesy, and are the laughing stock of the nation. Seriously, how can 90% of all your "traditions" involve bad mouthing the flagship university of our state? I don't know what it is they put in the water out there in Palestine, TX during fish camp, but it changes people completely (including a few die hard longhorn fans who grew up in Austin with me). Then again, it might have nothing to do with the water and more so the probable hazing for the duration of the weekend. Don't get me wrong, its a great institution and I actually considered going there for undergrad, but it was more logical for me to stay in Austin and rep my burnt orange like my parents raised me to.

UT has no class or common courtesy. It is the one school where I interviewed where NOT A SINGLE faculty member talked to me directly. The only faculty I saw was Wilcox - for two minutes when he told us about decisions. They are oh so busy that they can't review students more than once every 4-5 weeks. No other school in the state makes you wait these ridiculous periods. 52 days for a rejection decision that probably took them 30 seconds? What kind of courtesy is that? And they have a completely inconsistent admissions system to which everyone turns a blind eye.

But, I will give UT credit for its prison outreach program - they take criminals and give them a chance to play for the football team.

1. I really hope this is a troll.
2. I hope you realize how you are representing your own school right now.
3. There are two flagship universities in Texas and one of them is A&M so you are also badmouthing one of the flagship universities of Texas.
4. The University of Texas references Texas A&M in "Texas Fight"
5. I hope you realize that A&M and OU would both say the same about UT as you did about A&M.
6. I'm assuming you will no longer root for UT, say "hook em" or anything else related to UT once you get to grad school.

Do you have any other apps out?

I'm waiting on Tech and A&M at this point. Yeah, I'll definitely try different letters if things don't work out.

Dude, Knickbocker.....would you be throwing this gigantic hissy fit if you had gotten into UT? Didn't think so buddy.

Aggie07 ....HAH! Two flagship universities?! Oh that was good....they teach you to say that at fish camp? Oh and being a third generation longhorn, yeah I will care about my university for as long as I live.

In all seriousness, I actually respect the university and its academic programs....if you reread my previous post I clearly stated I had an issue with the fanbase - as in during football and basketball games. Hey whats a rivalry without some friendly trash talk.

What's to not get wrong about you? You are making ludicrous statements about a student population that you probably have never had to deal with. I don't know what pharmacy school being a graduate program has to do with Aggies being present or not. I'm not sure if you know, but Texas A&M is a major feeder school into medical, dental, optometry and PHARMACY schools. Maybe these diehard Longhorn fan friends of yours were a bunch of conformists who just went with the crowd. Or maybe they realized just what Texas A&M had to offer. Imagine that. Hazing what hazing? Texas A&M incorporates a sense of brotherhood and pride in our university because it IS a great institution with a lot to offer.

I don't know where these ideas of yours came from, Texas A&M is a fine and respected school. Texas A&M graduates are well educated, and highly sought after and they bring much to the table in any situation they may find themselves. You may never understand what the traditions mean, and that's probably a good thing. UT isn't a flagship all by itself, Texas A&M is also a flagship. Educate yourself. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flagship_university#Texas

So what you're saying is it's okay for you to care about UT "as long as you live" but Aggies should abandon their school at the door when they walk into grad school. Nice.

It's a fact that we're a flagship. I don't know what else to tell you. By the way, I didn't go to fish camp.

From the A&M website -
Opened in 1876 as Texas' first public institution of higher learning, Texas A&M University is a research-intensive flagship university with 46,000-plus undergraduate and 8,500 graduate students studying in over 250 degree programs in 10 colleges. Students can join any of 800 student organizations and countless activities ranging from athletics and recreation to professional and community service events.

A&M is included on a list of USA Today rankings of flagship universities -
http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2006-08-30-tuition-survey_x.htm

Former UT chancellor/president campaigns for UH to be Texas' third flagship -
http://www2.egr.uh.edu/news/Make_UH_next_flagship.html
"This is the case for regional and comprehensive universities, but unfortunately it is not the case for the state's two flagship research universities - the University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University."

Another article about the flagship universities of Texas -
http://www.physorg.com/news658.html
"Texas A and M University and The University of Texas at Austin are joining the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) Consortium to explore the frontiers of our universe as the result of a $1.25 million gift to Texas A and M from George P. Mitchell of Houston and matching funds from The University of Texas at Austin."
Do I need to continue?

Nope, I'd probably have turned a blind eye to it like all of the other UT sheep. Then again, if UT played a fair game, I probably would have gotten an acceptance there.

Hehehe... I was wondering when this discussion would break out...

If I was picking a program based on school nostalgia and sports teams I'd go Tech... or apply out of state.

Another troll??? Yikes

I don't follow school sports at all. In fact, I think that schools put too much money into athletics. I've read that universities in Mexico and Central America don't have school supported athletics. Instead students organize it on their own, outside of school (or through the city). That gets a 👍 from me.

dumb aggies... calling people trolls... don't they know I've been proclaimed czar of this thread?

Knick,
I don't know how the other schools do it but at A&M athletics is financially separate from the university and supports itself so as a student your money doesn't go to athletics unless you buy a ticket to a sporting event.

Yes, dumb, that's why I'm already in pharmacy school. Clearly, you couldn't have meant that you would really prefer Tech. I mean really?

Aight everyone needs to take a chill pill!!! Just step away from the keyboard and chillax. Lets not forget that we are here to help one another.. not talk smack or bash each other. I don't care where you're from or who your mascot is. We're all potential colleagues whether we like it or not so learn to respect each other now and get it over with.

I know that smaller schools (such as mine) that aren't so profitable have student fees and other expenses to cover at least part of the cost.

Hahahaha this is MADNESS! Seriously Achilleus is right, it's perfectly fine to honor and defend your school spirit but do that trash talking somewhere else and not on SDN! Besides if we do all go here, aren't we all going to become Javelinas...lol
