I am going to be apply in 2 years from now, and I live in Texas. Since I live in Texas, should I only apply to the three Texas schools, or should I apply to schools in different states as well? I plan on having a GPA around the 3.7 area. If I should apply to out-of-state schools, how many should I apply to? Thanks.

If your gpa is that high and you score decent on the DAT no need to apply out of state unless you just want to attend elsewhere.

i disagree... i know too many ppl who had 3.8 or what not and still got rejected....competition in texas is fierce..... i would apply to more to be on the safe side....trust me, you donot want to re-apply

Really? WOW I figured with the formula SA and Houston use if you have high stats your golden if you have half a personality to get through the interview.

What were they lacking to not get in with 3.8s?

3.7 GPA is competitive, but you will have to see how well you do on your DAT. Also, extracurriculars/community service/LOR play important roles in the admission process.

An average applicant applies to something like 8-10 schools.

If I were you, I would probably apply to 3-4 more schools out of Texas. 🙂😀😎

Definitely apply to more schools. Apply to one or more safety schools. I've heard of people getting interviews at all three Texas schools and not being admitted to any.

that's my story as of now. interviewed at all three and no replies since. listen to the other postings and apply to other schools (unless you really want to stay in texas).

An 18AA may have something to do with the lack of enthusiasm from the tx ds. More importantly what is your major?

I applied to all 3 Texas schools and 8 out-of-state. You never know what will happen, and like someone already said you don't want to re-apply. However, there is really no such thing as a "safety school." I would apply to private schools out-of-state and only state schools out-of-state if you have some sort of connection to the school or have a 3.8+GPA/20+DAT. I wish I had known about predents.com prior to applying, I would have saved myself some money. I would go to predents.com and look at students from Texas who were interviewed and/or accepted to out-of-state schools, and look into applying to those. As far as a number to apply to... I would shoot for anywhere from 6-12 schools.

I scored an 18AA on the DAT and was accepted to all 3 schools in Texas. I doubt that is what is holding this particular applicant back.

I agree with the whole "no such thing as a back-up school", at least for me in my position. I applied to Temple and Midwestern as back-up schools, both of which failed me, but got into my #1 (OHSU).

A 3.82 Gpa trumps an 18AA esp in SA.

i'm a bio major and have a 3.85 GPA, with a 3.7 science. i think a 16 in the chem section is probably holding me back, which is why i may have to retake for this cycle. i should have applied to more schools, i might have gotten lucky. 🙄

Maybe race matters too. I am asian w/a 3.9 and 18 AA on DAT, interviewed at all three schools in Texas and still haven't heard back from any of them. I know other asian w/similar stats who also did not get into all three schools. I definitely recommend ppl to apply out of state if they don't want to reapply.

Vote Mitt Romney! If you vote for a democrat, you'll be screwing yourself as a doctor...socialized healthcare my pre-dent friends?...NO THANK YOU. Vote Mitt Romney!

Is it just me, or am I the only one who finds this a tad offensive? or at least unjustified.

You will find that a lot of people do only apply in state. If your stats are high enough at the time I would apply only in state and save the hassle of dealing with AADSAS and save A LOT of time and money.

Unless you really want to attend a specific out of state school or just get out of Texas for a few years then I would stick to just using TMDSAS.

Maybe... I thought I would try my luck at some out-of-state schools, and with a similar GPA and 18AA DAT, I was asked to re-take the DAT at a couple of schools I applied to, and there were two school that I never even heard a word from after my application was complete until the rejection letter came along.

My major is International Affairs, but I will take upper division science classes.

I applied to only Texas schools because I figured that I have a chance at like 270 something spots. Whereas out of state schools do not take many out of state students if they are a public school. Private schools will take people from anywhere but they cost a lot to go to. So if you have a ton of money to apply to out of state and to pay for travel to interviews and extra application fees then I would go for it.

I did both. Although it was a pain, it was well worth it. My advice to you is to find two out-of-state schools that you know that you can get into (safety schools) and apply to those as well incase you are not accepted in Texas. It is better to spend the extra time and money to make sure you are not waiting around an extra year. Good luck.

I would certainly explore other schools out-of-state if you are interested in getting out of Texas for a spell (you can always go back later). If your DAT score is strong (20 and up), you may as well see what's out there. You only want to go through the application process once and personally, I would want to get through it knowing where all of my options lie. It may cost you some extra dough, but at least you've tested the market and know for sure whether you want to stay or go.

From my personal experience, I grew up in Indiana and was pretty sure that I would end up at IU, but I went ahead and applied to several other out-of-staters. I found out when I visited Kentucky that getting in-state tuition was possible after the first year and I loved the school. I lucked out, got in, and have no regrets about my choice to leave 👍.
