Respect from peers as a physician is important. I don't know why you would opt to carry the stigma, valid or not. USMLE+COMLEX=kill me. And isn't there a rumor that some residency directors brag about the number of MDs they have compared to DOs and IMGs? From reading these boards TCOM seems like an awesome place to be, but I wouldn't want to bust my butt just to be on an even level with everyone else when applying for residencies.

Sorry to break it to you, but you'll still be busting your butt just to be on an even level in an MD school.

from a previous post concerning utmb/uth step 1 scores:

"I'm pretty sure schools tell students who are not doing well to not take step 1. I think Galveston's 228 is the average for 177 students of the 220-something size class. If Houston's average is 220 and UTMB's is 228, but UTMB has their 40 worst students not take it, then the two schools averages could be much more comparable."

True, but at least you won't be at a disadvantage for the step 1. The total osteopathic students that took the step 1 in 2004 was 1,043 and 1,192 in 2005. The % passing was 73 and 69, respectively. This in combination with the fact that you are coming from a DO school (I am not inferring that they are worse) puts you at a disadvantage for allopathic residnecies.

I would only go DO if it is truly what you wanted to do or you had no other option. With medical school being as hard as it already is, I would not want to add any further obstacles.

I'm saying DOs might have to shine a little bit more than MDs to prove themselves to a residency. It's nice to work hard to be the best you can be without starting at a disadvantage.

Anyone know why there are only about 50-60 that match at TAMU when there's a class of about 80??? 😕

The class of 2006 was smaller. 2010 has only 85 now. That's all. They've just been growing towards 80 recently. And now this year I think it will be around 100 🙂 so no panicking yet. Its more important where and into what they match. Pretty much EVERYONE will match, though some could be through the scramble. There are more than enough residencies in the U.S. for all U.S. med school graduates. That's why we get international med school grads coming here for residency.

yeah that's what im kind of hoping too... that each school is increasing their class size this year... even if its a couple of seats...

Ladies and gentlemen.

We have just entered February. Starting countdown... 13 days, 23 hours, 51 minutes and 30 seconds to go.
 
Its kinda funny... being overly involved/over achieving pre-medders (soon to be medders) I would have thought more of the debate discussion would have happened at least a LITTLE earlier 🙂 This thread and all Texas discussion was D-E-D dead! (hah hah) until the night before. I just thought it was funny. I would have thought the agonizing decision would have been drawn out a little longer. I'm really really excited for everyone!

Oh and if anyone cares I ranked 1. UTSW and 2. UTH (where I've accepted pre-match). It really came down to home and Dallas is super close and I'd like to be close to family and bf again. 🙂 But I love Houston too!! GAAHHH I definitely understand the agony 🙂

That's so true. I thought I had a handle on the ranking of my schools until the date started looming. It became very hard for me to choose b/t UTSA and UTMB, but in the end unlike Jota I think Galveston is decent and the option to rotate in Austin pulled on me hugely.

1. UTMB
2. UTSA
3. A&M
4. Tech (sorry tech, you might have been #3 but no EM programs in Lubbock)
 
Looks like its gonna be:

1. UTMB
2. UTHouston
3. Southwestern
4. TCOM
 
1) UT-H
2) UT-HSCSA
3) UT-SW
4) UTMB
5) TAMU

But with TAMU and UTSA pre-match (UTSA kept) I guess it is really 1) UT-H; 2) UT-HSCSA. Unless UT-SW really does not participate in the match.

Still a few hours to change though.

Hey, I might've ranked everything the same as you (although I probably would've put UTSA above UTMB) but UTMB is a good school in a bad location. Being able to do years 3 and 4 in Austin is the bonus wildcard (I could probably endure through 2 years anywhere, including Galveston,) but, for me (with a family) would obviously make things logistically difficult (Move from Austin -> Galveston, and then in 2 years, from Galveston -> Austin)

FWIW, my rankings were:

1. UTSW (Pre-Match)
2. UTSA
3. A&M
4. UTMB

....which is probably close to how I would've ranked them if I didn't have the pre-match offer(s). If I didn't receive any pre-match offers, I probably would've ranked them:

1. UTSW
2. UTSA
3. UTMB
4. Tech
5. A&M

.....MAYBE swapping UTSW with UTSA, but who knows. I had a real tough time ranking UTMB (before I knew that I had pre-match offers) because I like the school/curriculum/reputation, but hate the location.

But, most importantly, Good Luck to everybody! May everybody match to their first choice!!!!! :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck:

Here's my official ranking of all the schools I interviewed/received pre-match offers from:

I. UTSW
II UT-H
III. UTHSCSA (pre-match offer in hold)
IV. UTMB
V. A&M
VI. TCOM
VII. TECH
 
Nope, you don't rank pre-match offers you've already declined. And if your pre-match offer is your first choice, you rank schools you haven't declined (b/c no pre-match offer) below it in order to withdraw. I had some confusion with this as well.

1) UTSW
2) UTHSCSA
 
Out of curiosity, what are the reasons for some of you ranking Texas Tech over TAMU and vice versa? Hopefully it's not just because of location. :scared:

As you can probably tell, I'm getting nervous now that the ability to rank is about to close!
 
Haha, ok so did anyone else have people calling them last night wondering what school you got into?? :laugh: Lol, it only made me feel more nervous...so much expectation!
 
All i can say is I feel sorry for the poor souls that piss me off these next 2 weeks. There is such a long way to go til match but my stress level is already very high.

I had a bit of a problem with the fact that in anatomy lab each tank had 3 groups of 2. Two groups were at the tank at a given class and they taught the third group. I liked S&W but UMC in lubbock seemed better to me.

I feel you on that one. I teach mcat classes and they have started asking me if i got in, and I try to just move on. But the other day someone asked if I matched yet, and I kinda snapped on em "ITS ON FEBRUARY 15TH, DROP IT" They haven't mentioned it since. I felt like a huge jerk.

4) TCOM

Also, anybody else really confused at first because there was no "Southwestern" on the list...instead it said "UT Medical School-Dallas". It took me a while. :laugh:

Yeah, what's up with that? No one calls it UT Medical School-Dallas (except TMDSAS, apparently.)

The whole TMDSAS web site seems so cheesy that I am scared about the match results because I'm scared that it didn't actually save my choices, etc (yes, I logged back in after saving my preferences to see that they were actually saved.)

I did exactly the same thing. You can never know if it's been saved or not because it doesn't record it in a way that is permanent. I am very paranoid about those things and I was afraid the computer wouldn't register it, or that it would be wrong, or that it would be accidentally moved. Anyway...that website needs a serious update!

I know what you guys are going through. As an OOS student, UT-Houston will let me know after your match results. SO I have no idea how this is going to work out. I am assuming that the class fills after your match most likely...

UTSW? I always loved that school since the day I decided to become premed. I'd castrate myself to go there thats how bad i want to be accepted

thats prob why i threw a hissy fit before too... those reports of UTSW not participating in the match made me feel that i was sawing off my thing for no reason

Are we supposed to rank schools we have pre-match offers from that we declined (via the TMDSAS site)? ...ie, would I rank: 1) UTSW, 2) UTH (prematch)... or 1) UTSW 2) UTH (prematch) 3) UTMB (prematch, declined)?

No. Per the e-mail from TMDSAS sent at the end of December: You must rank all schools where you interviewed except those that you declined an offer or withdrew from after you interviewed.

I know I know I know!!! But I had to take the long shot to try to be close to home again. It would be SO nice to be close during those stressful times. But GOSH I love Houston!!! I swear! 🙂 If I don't get into UTSW can I come back to the cool kids club? puuuuhhhleeeezzeeeee??????? 😀
