Processed by TMDSAS or by A&M.... when did they receive your secondary?
TMDSAS. A&M had my secondary on 8-1.

I just got one from A&M too! for 8/31 too! I might have to reschedule but I'm glad I got one!

Me neither. I think I am in the same boat with UT-H. They have now had multiple rounds of interviews since I submitted. I guess that statement about them not liking engineers is really true, although I noticed that WestTexasRambler was a business major (one of the other majors that UT-H says they look down upon,) so maybe they just didn't like my picture or something.

UTSA is perplexing to me, but I am holding out hope since it doesn't seem like they have invited for too many rounds of interviews yet.

That could be... you could always call and check on whether they have your complete application... I was near the office when somebody was doing just that, and the secretaries were really nice about being called and asked.

I'm in the same boat with UTH -- I was processed on 6/28. Your engineering stigma may include physics majors. Bizarre that the exact same set of applications goes out to UTH, UTSA, and UTMB, and yield such different results. I also haven't heard from UTSW, but I can understand different invitation patterns from them; they have secondaries to look at and are differently focused than the others, more research-oriented.

Anastasis said:
So You got an interview at UTSW with no letters of rec?

I think it's official: UTSW will be showing lil'ol'me no love this year.

Correct, I have not submitted LOR yet, but i have in my hands the last one from my supervisor which he is letting me review. So hopefully i will have them sent out by the middle of next week.

And just incase people are trying to figure out a pattern, my raw stats are 35MCAT and 3.83 GPA. Not to bad for being 5 years out of school,(8 years since taking prereq's, YIKES) but my 35 was on the low side of my testing range. However, from what i have gathered from these forums 35+ is really all I need to be competitive.

On a side note, being a 27 year old nontrad, these forums have really help me feel like i wasn't completely left out of the loop on the application cycle. They really are a great resource.

Edit: spelling

Still no love for me. Processed on 7/5 by TMDSAS. A girl I work with had her first interview today at UT-H. So jealous. Oh well, interviews last until December-ish? So there's still hope.

i'll be at A&M interview next thurs too =D
I go to A&M for my undergrad, so i'll be staying at my place...
i wonder if A&M has housing for interview (staying with a medical school)

Hey I went to A&M for undergrad as well - though a long time ago. Still trying to figure out where to stay at A&M. The least expensive place I found was about $45 @ Best Value something or the other. Days Inn was about $50. I'm thinking I'll do the stay with a student thingy for Tech.

If I remember right, they did mention having housing with a med student, though it may be limited.

See you next thursday. No social the night before, right?

I stayed at the Fairfield Inn on Texas Ave. It wasn't the cheapest (approx. $70) but it was pretty nice and the beds were very comfortable. It was reasonably convenient, as well.

A&M only interview on Thursdays??? Never on Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat or Sun??? 🙁

I agree, the whole thing is bizarre!!!

Anyone know why UT-H "looks down" on engineering and business/management degrees? I haven't heard from them either (UG - ChemE, Grad - Eng Management).

I actually figured A&M would be my holdout because I'd heard they don't like non-trads, so I was pleasantly surprised when I did get the email. Guess I shouldn't believe everything I read either.

Wow! I interviewed with Houston yesterday, and I was impressed. It felt like a recruiting trip. Everyone was very nice; even the President of the University spoke with us during lunch. I had no ideal that it was the largest medical center in the world. Well I still have S.A., Galv., and A&M to go, but they will have a hard time topping Houston.

I majored in ChemE as well and received an interview with UT-H. I think their reasons for looking down on engineering/business fields is that they run the risk of being taught vocationally, rather than within the context of the liberal arts. It might have something to do with the nature of your coursework outside of engineering, but, of course, that's just a guess. Who knows why anything works the way it does in this process...

ooh many aggies are always great=D
my dad went to A&m for his masters/ph D when i was in elementary school, so if i do go to A&M medical school somehow, that would be 9 yrs of college station for me..hehe
i don't think they had social the night before...and about the housing, u should defintely email the admission director and stay with a medical student!
cya there =D(i'll be one of the few Asian girl with a long permed hair)

Yea, the Texas Medical Center is glorious. Biggest in the world, and definitely one of the best.

I love TMC 🙂

any interview offer for out of staters?

I'm from CA, submitted early July and haven't heard a thing.

Whoop! Got my first interview!! UTMB 9/8. I'm SO nervous. It seemed like there was so much time to prepare for interviews and now its so close and I've done NOTHING!

There was an OOS guy from Virginia at UTSA on 8/14. He's the only one I know of so far.

Where did UT-H express that they "look down" upon engineering and business majors? I'm an engineering major and both of my interviewers at UT-H seems to like that because of the unique experiences and perspectives I can/might bring...?

And does A&M only interview on Thursdays??? Never on Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat or Sun???

I agree with your view on engineering backgrounds, but here's what UT-H says:

"Technological, vocational, engineering or business courses of study are not viewed as favorably as those providing a broad educational background."

At my UTSA interview, my interviewer told me that yeah, TMC is huge, but its all private hospitals which can't compare to the amount of things you would be able to perform in UTSA's affiliated county hospitals.

I'm curious of everyone's take on this statement.

Honestly, that's my only concern about TMC. Since I want to do underserved healtcare I wonder how well UT-H's clinical rotations will prepare me for that. Luckily I think you can do a rotation at the county hospital plus Baylor has the whole care for the underserved track.

I still 😍 UT-H so it's not much of a concern.

Yes, A&M interviews on Thursdays only. Good Luck!

So no luck at the MSC?
http://uc.tamu.edu/msc/guestrooms.asp

Been a long time since I stayed there 🙁 Not sure how cheap they are now.

Great recommendation. Its slightly more expensive $60 + $10 parking but I think it'll be great. Too bad I'm going to have to pay parking twice. For the interview they recommend parking on lot 72 near the medical school. I could take a shuttle to the medical school building from MSC but I'm trying to minimize the walking with the suit on in the TX summers. Also not sure if the shuttle runs that early?

Oddly enough the MSC wasn't listed as a potential place to stay in the list of places the school sent out.

to my knowledge, there are 4 hospitals in TMC: methodist (private), st. luke's (private), memorial hermann (semi-private), and ben taub (county affiliated). the VAMC is down the street and is similar to ben taub. i'd always thought hermann was private but saw similar cases to ben taub. and i'm not sure but ut-h may also have rotations in ben taub.

i could be very wrong about this since it was hearsay w/ the doctors i worked with in TMC.

For those who have yet to get an interview invite, but were processed relatively early (Late June/Early July) have you called the schools to check on your status?

I'm just curious about people's luck with calling schools like UTH and UTMB on what's going on with their application.

Thanks

What about Texas Children's and MD Anderson?

According to the brochure/magazine Baylor sent out to applicants there are 13 hospitals and 2 specialty institutions in the TMC.

Roundabout answer: Because they say that they prefer liberal arts or science programs of study. Real answer: Dean of admissions probably failed out of an engineering program or something.

Where did you hear that A&M didn't like nontrads? Has anyone else heard this?

Word of mouth for other applicants (I was told I either had to be an alum or know someone given my non-trad bio) and their US News and World Ult Guide to Med school stat: "Percentage of students not coming directly from college after graduation: 4%"

But like I said - they sent me an invite, so I'm not complaining!! 🙂

UTSA seems like a better place for primary care exposure (especially with the harlingen campus) and TMC is probably much more specialized exposure....

That said, Ive never been to either.

just got a Texas Tech invite today by email.... what is everyone's take on Lubbock? Given the choice would it be better to interview in Lubbock or El Paso?

Congrats, When was your app sent to schools?

Also, I think it's cheaper to fly into El Paso.

my app was sent to schools 6/21 and my letters of rec arrived 8/1.

I was thinking the same thing about El Paso, but I think it might be better to go to Lubbock just to see if I could live there for 4 years. 🙂

Also, I have never been able to get my TTU status page to work (and I have to log on to schedule my interview). Anyone else have trouble?

It usually seems to work, but didn't last night. After 2 years in Lubbock I think the class is split up into thirds, 1/3 in Lubbock, 1/3 in El Paso, and 1/3 in Amarillo.

I would recommend going to the Lubbock campus for your interview. At least you know for sure that you will be spending 2 years there... Lubbock isn't that great of a place but the school is really nice...

TCOM question -- Did anyone's status on the TCOM admissions page change from something about being selected for an interview to "Your application is currently under review" after you had your interview date? I thought thats what it said before being selected for an interview...

I also got an invite to Tech and i will be there on the 25th oh so close but at least its b4 school starts.

Anyone here processed by TMDSAS on the 7th August or after got interview offers at any school yet?

And don't be wierded out. Think of it as a symbolically-timed step toward saving lives rather than losing them.

lol well i did forget about those huh.

1. VAMC
2. Ben Taub
3. Memorial Hermann Children's
4. Memorial Hermann
5. Methodist
6. St. Luke's
7. Shriners Hospital for Children
8. TCH
9. MD Anderson
10. Hospice
11. St. Luke's Heart Institute
12. YMCA Child Care Center

i'm not sure what the last one is. and yea most of these are private. i don't think that brings the level of teaching down that much (unless a med student wants to fill this question). in any case, i don't feel that the affiliation of the teaching hospitals should determine where you want to go. it's more about where you feel comfortable living and being for 4 yrs. i think the differences in education are marginal.

Yay! Congratulations! With any luck, I'll be joining you <crossing fingers> but I'm still in Lubbock, with no way to check my snail mail (obviously.)

Both my UTMB interviews today were so incredibly short and benign that I almost worry whether I was missing something... was anybody else there?

I interviewed at UTMB today, and one of my interviewers went over the entire interview sheet they fill out and give to the admissions comittee. Anyways at the bottom of the sheet it asked to rate the applicant overall, with the highest rating being RECRUIT.

Has anyone ever heard of a med school going out of there way to recruit an applicant after there interview? (like phone call or letter)

For anyone who has interviewed at UT-Houston have they received a phone call or letter after the interview?

Thanks!!!
by the way this is my first post; I've been reading these posts for a couple hours straight. pretty sad.
