Texas Interviews 2008: Part 2

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Wow, another example on how crazy messed up this system is. I'm sorry to hear that feline, I hope it was just a flaw with UTMB.

I hope so. I feel like I'm not going to get anymore interviews. It feels late. Is it? I thought my application was alright. Not outstanding numbers, but quite a lot of clinical and non-clinical volunteering and research awards. I think TX schools reviewed it with old MCAT scores and I have no chance in TX now 🙁
A friend of mine got in with a 24M and a 3.4 last year. She keeps saying I'll get in somwhere. It just sucks!

pend·ing (pĕn'dĭng)
adj.

1. Not yet decided or settled; awaiting conclusion or confirmation.
2. Impending; imminent.

WHICH ONE IS IT!?!?!?!??!?!?!?:scared::barf:

There's just so many people being reviewed. As I wrote a while back, I know of people who got late interviews last year...some with higher numbers and some with the avg. for the schools. Hold on tight. You will hear something soon. :luck:

Alright, I'll stop being grumpy. I wish for one interview invite by this weekend🙂

Yeah, don't listen to those people...that's what everyone told me last year. 🙁

feline, I had the same thing happen to me a few weeks ago. I posted it on this forum several pages back but it got ignored. I called Texas Tech because they had my email wrong and I asked them to change it, while on the phone I asked about my new MCAT and the lady was like oooohhh we reviewed you with your old MCAT and she said she would take it to be reviewed again. After hearing your story I'm starting to worry that my expierence, as well as yours, might not be isolated cases. This forum represents a very small % of Texas med school apps and if we have 2 people on here that had the same thing happen at different schools weeks apart that is not comforting. I'm going to call UTMB tomorrow and ask the same question about my MCAT and let yall know how it goes.

wow I thought I was the only one getting screwed. I called Texas Tech also, and a guy answered, although he wasn't rude, he just said "I see your latest score but I cannot see if your application has already been reviewed or not". I'll call them them again Friday to see if I get someone else on the phone.

That sucks. I hope it works out for you two. Always pisses me off when the admissions staff are rude on issues like this. I know they field calls like this all the time, but I'm pretty sure that's part of their job description. On the other hand, friendly admissions staff are very helpful. Just to prop some up, I've had good conversations with TCOM, A&M, and UTMB.

TCOM was great with me. I called their office regarding a question about the secondary and they connected me to the assistant dean. He was so helpful. The office staff was very friendly during the interview, and I had good conversations with the interviewers. Today I called UTHSC-SA also, and they were very nice.

UTMB was rude last time I called and did not tell me that my application has already been reviewed. I was lucky to find a nice lady today.

Now I gotta find someone nice at A&M, Tech, and UTH to check on this MCAT score mess.

I'm not gonna feel bad until I start getting those rejection letters. Then I'll know there's no more hope.

If I get into A&M or SA in November and then I get an interview somewhere in December I plan to go to the interview drunk and in shorts. If I'm asked "do you have any questions about our school?" I'll say "yeah, how come your school is too dumb to interview a stud like me earlier in the season?" I'll then light up a cigar and start doing that three stooges-running-on-my-side-in-circles-on-the-floor thing. If any school accepts me after that then they must REALLY want me and I'd have to match them #1.

Has anyone that took the July 13th test heard back from any schools yet. I just realized its been over 3 weeks for me and nothing, not one interview. Should I be worried yet?

What the heck happened, why is it all quiet and where are our invites? 😱

Calm before the storm? I'm about to start begging for more invites...by this time last year I had just received my UTH interview. So WHERE is it this year??? Hmm? Sigh. 🙁 I sure hope I get this job at UTH, maybe that would help me out a bit. 🙄

EDIT: Oh, and last year I wasn't complete until the very end of August. So humph.

You have had more interviews that I've had. How about YOU share the love!!! 😛

so i submitted my A&m, tech and sw secondaries more than a month and a half ago. For my tech and a&m status page it says everything was received like august 1st. I was just wondering if I should call the schools and ask them what is going on with my app or if that is just rude? I have heard back from the other texas schools that I didn't have to submit secondaries to and so I'm just confused as to what is going on. Any thoughts?

I took the July 13th test. I self-reported my scores, and TCOM was the only school that would take a self-report. They sent an invite pretty quickly after that. Otherwise, I've only heard from one school and that was very late last week.

I'm hoping that there's more to come.

So I just called Texas Tech, found someone who listened to me and yes my file was reviewed with the old score. The lady said she'll make a note and the director will review it again. Now I hope it gets done. I don't want to annoy them, when should I check back? Any suggestions?

That's a tough one. If your score is that much better I would call every two weeks OR ask them how often it would be appropriate to call. Their answer might be "Don't call us. We'll call you."-ish, but it might let you come off a little less forceful. Just a suggestion.

hi! I was just wondering for those of you that received emails saying that UTMB was reviewing your app, how long was it before you heard about an interview?

-also someone asked about july 13th mcat takers, the only place i've heard from is UTSW and that was last week as well

did anyone have an lmfu change? my changed to 9/12/07
i know it probably means nothing, but i was wondering if anyone else got one.

Nope, mine hasn't changed for two months.

YAY! I got my job at UTH!!! I'm so happy!

okay, you've got me worried now w/ your story! my apps were sent out pretty early (6/20), but i had to retake the mcat on aug 6th...i got back my scores last wed.
now i want to make sure that the schools haven't already reviewed my application w/ my old score. where do you find the numbers to call? and who do you ask to speak w/?

edp at tech. Yea, I'm overly excited, I want to run in circles but I'm at work (teacher).

Feline did you call all the medical schools in texas? If so did they give you a for sure answer. I called houston and they told me that they dont make this kind of mistake and the lady was a little rude telling me to just wait for them to contact me. Havent called UTMB yet and after that call Idk if I want to.

The # I called for Tech was 806-743-2297 and just said I wanted to check if my file was reviewed with the old MCAT or put on hold for the new MCAT. They connected me to the right department.

For UTMB I called 409-772-3762.

You can find the admissions office #s on school websites.

I've tried all of them. Eventually UTMB and Tech were helpful. UTH was rude to me too. They tried to explain me the process of putting apps in a pool and what not.

In case anyone is curious...I've been emailing the various schools to find out about how to update them about my new job (woot!), and I am getting different answers. UTMB updated my file straight from the email I sent, but UTHSCSA wanted me to update it thru TMDSAS. So if anyone in the future needs to update something, PM me and I'll let you know who does what! 👍

ACCEPTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:wow::biglove::biglove::banana::banana::banana::clap::clap::banana::bow::banana:

That is so crazy. congratulations! Man, at Baylor they said only 4 people applied early decision. One of them is a friend of mine, and though I thought he was worthy before, when I found out there were only 4 EDers I knew he was a shoo-in. I've never tried to spell that before. Anyway. EDP stuff scared the ****e out of me.

Congrats, 216. If you don't mind my asking, what made you choose EDP for Tech?

I went to Tech for undergrad and love how friendly and helpful everyone is there. 99% of the professors I had were truly interested in getting to know the students and it's the same over at the HSC; the doctors there are just great people all around. I also love the early clinical exposure that Tech has. I think it's ridiculous that some schools don't teach you the basic clinical procedures until the 3rd year. I also grew up in a very small town (~400 people) and I'm not a big fan of big cities but lubbock is the perfect size for me; not too big that the traffic sucks and not too small that there is nothing to do. So tech was my number one choice and I wanted to show my commitment to tech by applying edp, I figured it would up my chances of being accepted, plus I would know what direction to head with my life early on because this was going to be a one shot thing.

if you dont mind me asking, what are your stats?

Do you have to have great stats to apply edp?

Well, it kinda makes sense, especially in Texas. Because you don't really have your TMDSAS app ready like your AMCAS one if you don't get in EDP, then you're screwed for that year.

Plus, Baylor caps EDP admittance to 5% of the total class, which is projected to be 9 people. That's a pretty small funnel if you don't know how many people were applying EDP.

Actually, BCM caps at 10%. Off the website:
BCM fills no more than 10 percent of the positions in the incoming class by the early decision route.

Could be less, it's true, but the cap is 10%. Which is a big difference if you want to apply early! It makes sense to me that so few people applied ED; I mean, I myself didn't apply ED b/c too many things can go wrong. But 4 people! Makes me a little crazy.

Meh it was something small. In any case, you'd need to be bettr than the average at Baylor and that's saying something already...

I took the July 13th and I got a UTMB invite on August 28th. I'm kinda hoping for A&M anytime now. I've been meaning to add it to the list, especially since it's my first and only interview thus far but I've been too lazy.

2cor4seven if you dont mind me asking what kind of mcat and GPA do you have?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong about this, but I was always under the impression that UTH was as competitive to get into as say UTMB so why is it that UTH is only interviewing people with extraordinary gpas and mcats? I would expect it out of UTSW but I'm a little surprised by UTH.

Do they do this every year and eventually get to the average students because their mean GPA and MCAT is comparable to UTMB, A&M and SA.

OR is this something different for this year because there are very highly qualified applicants this cycle? I've heard the above statement repeated by 2 interviewers who were surprised at how many people had stellar numbers in Texas. This frightens me.

I'm going to assume you're judging this based on SDN. This has been said many times in many places, but, SDN is NOT an accurate representation of the applicant pool... just because people on here have great numbers doesn't mean everyone that UTH is inviting for an interview has identical stats.

The numbers seem pretty competitive at UTH. At least on par with the others sans SW and Baylor. I have a friend close to an adcom member at UTMB who says UTMB is much more "stat oriented" this year - not good news for me. Who knows really.

For some reason I'm actually getting LESS stressed as time goes on here. I've only had two interviews (TCOM and A&M) and feel like I put my best foot forward at both. Pretty much everything from here on out is completely out of my hands until I'm fortunate enough to be invited to another interview.

That brings up a question I thought I could pose to the group: How do you see the process playing out for you during the prematch period? You don't have to brag, but be honest. For example, I think I have a pretty good chance at TCOM early on in the process and might get an offer from A&M closer to February if things play out right - giving me two options. :luck: I think that's the most likely scenario for me, but it could certainly go much worse or better.

How about ya'll? Shot callers? 😀
