TEXAS Med Schools Entering Class 2004 Applicant Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Would that be an invite on Aug 19 and an interview on Sept 20 or an invite on aug 19 and interview on Aug 20??? 😕

I did. I sent them to A&M, UTH, UTSA, and TCOM. I pretty much typed up a template and change it according to what I like best about the schools.

Sent it by snailmail.

Spumoni, thanks! I'll bet your invite is on the way. Yours was the one that got misfiled under MD/PhD, right? My interview isn't until 11/1. Maybe I'll see you there!

Now I'm just waiting for out-of-state possibilities (long reaches), October (Baylor?), and Feb 1st! I need a hobby! (besides reading SDN  )

Hey theresa,
how common is it to write thank-you notes to your interviewer?

thanks,
gleevec

Gleevec, my understanding is that it's very common to write thank you notes. It's definitely good protocol. If nothing else, perhaps your interviewer will feel more kindly towards you or think you are more serious about that school when your file comes up for review.

The thank you doesn't have to be elaborate. I bought formal looking white cards from Target! I just said "thanks for taking the time..." and something about our conversation or about the school that I liked. 3 sentences, maybe 4. If you stick both cards in a larger envelope and mail them to the Admissions office they will usually deliver the cards for you. (that way you don't have to locate mailing addresses for everyone.)

T

so who was at UTH this past September 12th, friday?? just want to see if i recognize anybody

Also Theresa, about the thank you notes, you sure we can just mail the thank you notes to the Admissions office and they'll know what to do? or should we write separate mailing address listings on each card and then mail them respectively to each interviewer?

cheers and good luck everyone

Let's see if I can remember this correctly. I believe UTH and Baylor both told me to send the notes to admissions and they would see that they were delivered. I called admissions offices before sending notes because I wanted to make sure the addresses on the websites (when I could find them) were correct.
At other schools I just mailed them directly to the interviewers. I would definitely double check this info!

I really liked the school a whole lot. I was able to meet with one of the students that went to my university, and she said she loved the school. I was hesitant thinking there might not be anyone to talk with since it was on a Saturday, but there was a mob of students (probably the free food) that joined the interviewers during lunch. I really liked the Senior video, and I felt the atmosphere was very light. They even made jokes about Aggies. I had taken a tour with my school two years ago & really enjoyed the campus. The student center is awesome, you must see it. I also like how they did the interviews. You didn't have to find them, you were at a common area, and they came and got you. I really liked it a whole lot. We will see what turns out on Match day I guess. Hopefully, they liked me!

Just ordered my plane ticket and reserved my hotel for Tech on the 24th *^%*#@ interviews are expenisive. $*&^%

Southwestern rules! you will love it, Im sure. Its a fantastic school with an astounding faculty and great resources. I put it as my #1 in the match. I think UTSW is really on par with a lot of the top schools from what Ive seen, and the tuition cannot be beat. If you have any questions Theresa, or anyone else for that matter, I will be happy to try to answer them over pm or in this thread. Good luck to everyone! Stay safe this weekend.

For those with any questions about interviewing at Texas schools or UT Southwestern specifically, feel free to drop me a question at [email protected]. I would be more than happy to answer them.

Best of luck to all.

hey guys, interview at T A&M soon...any tips or hints?? specifically for Texas A&M? thanks

Nothing much going on here. Dont forget to list your match preferences after your last TMDSAS interview.

Im just waiting til Feb. 1st now for the TMDSAS schools.

Gleevec,

Good for you. I hope you get your 1st choice, which is UTSW if I recall correctly. Prior to having any interviews (I just pressed send this week/August MCAT), UTSW is #1 with me. That could all change though.

Where are all the late interview folks?? I guess they don't play on SDN.

Yeah UTSW is very impressive, Im sure you will like it. I think interviews in TX are in full gear for another couple months, as I think you are in great shape as long as you interview before christmas. I just wish they resolved the match earlier. Oh well.

Ortho, how did that personal statement turn out?

Great thackl, your input was extremely helpful. The tone was really improved. May I complement you on the ability to BS like a pro. I'm finishing all secondaries this weekend.

Maybe I'm late enough to miss the peak application processing window and it will zip through semi-quickly. My LOR's are not in yet, but that is all I lack.

I can't wait to see the schools first hand. The comments you have all posted have been very iteresting and insightful.

Good luck to all. Remember, 50% of resident applicants make it in to a Texas school!

Based on the pass/fail comments I have seen on SDN, how do the Texas schools weigh in? It seems like most are letter grade in the first two years. It looks like P/F is less stressful.

Anybody care to substantiate known P/F schools?

What about mandatory lecture attendance at Texas schools? I probably wouldn't mind, since class is good for me generally. It seems that a lot of folks self-study and skip a lot of lectures. Any feedback from the interview trail?

ok here's the stitch on me. UTSW sent me a general letter saying thanks for applying to MD/PHD you need to file AMCAS and secondary (which I did eons ago) and then they said we we let you know if you are missing anything. hopefully they'll start soon. 🙁

ANYBODY HERE AN pre-MSTP/MD/PHD student having the same story??

Hey Gleevec and .02 good to hear your interviews went so well.

I am new to this thing.

Will anyone be at T&M on 10/2 or UT-Houston on 10/3?

 Not BS. I was just rearranging your ideas. Nothing was there that wasn't yours (well, very little).

As for your other questions. Baylor does P/F the first semester, then goes to grades. The rest use a variation of A,B,C,F. Tech uses H (honors), HP (high pass), p (pass), LP (low pass), F (fail).

I believe very few classes are mandatory. You just have to find out what works best for you. I will probably skip a lot and study during class after the first few weeks. They will tell you what is mandatory.

thackl, that's interesting about the grades and attendance. I would like to think that I could skip a class once in a while. Some other have said that they always self-study. I like hearing/reading/applying....the repetition works for me. So I normally go to class.

I never miss class! It's one of my keys to success as an undergrad. But as an undergrad, I also don't have a cheap scribe sevice and video taped lectures on the net. The issue for most in med school is time. If you listen/read/apply, then repeat as necessary (like in undergrad) when in med school, then you will have to give up sleep/exercise/eating/social........ you get my point.

Those ***** gunner wanna-be's you see in intro bio spending 30hrs a week (on something that should take 30min) and running through the perfectly done, 10 inch stack of flash cards are the ones who will suffer the most 1st yr. There simply isn't time and the only thing they will have going is edurance since they are alreay used to spending LOTS of time studying.

The first block is a kick in the crotch for everyone. You have to try different things to see what works. I have no idea yet what will work for me. At the moment, I think undergrad Anatomy sucks..... I can't even imagine Gross in med school...... well, I can, but don't want to 🙁

I looooooovee Baylor. It's now my top choice 😀 . What a great program, great school and great day!! I would attend Baylor in a heartbeat. The interviews were cool--i had one w/a student, and it was very laid back. For the first time I found myself spontaneously generating a bunch of questions on the spot just b/c I was truly interested. This has been my best interview yet, I think, because I really felt at home and psyched about the school. I think my interviewer and I must have talked for 20 min+ just on questions I asked him. Baylor has an amazing program, and at a $6550 tuition, can't be beat!!!! Apparently they "shuffle the deck" of applicants every 2 weeks...so I guess they're not bound to the Oct 15 deadline??

*thanks the powers above that she is a texas resident*

Hey Spumoni,
I think I saw you there yesterday? Do you remember the guy from Sugar Land who made the comment about the light rail, and wore a blue shirt and gray tie?

Just curious,

Baylor is ridiculous and its definitely my #1 choice. The facilities are great, the medical center is wonderful, and the curriculum really suits my learning style. They have these great track programs for students with certain interests (research, intl. health, ethics, geriatrics)--Im really interested in the first two. The students seemed really happy there, and if I somehow manage to get in around Oct. 15th, I won't be scheduling anymore interviews. Glad to hear you liked it too spumoni. I know theresaW loved it =).

Gleevec

Baylor kicks a$$. I wish I were willing to move my family to Houston and deal with the Medical center parking/congestion 🙁 If I were only looking at schools and only had myself to consider, Baylor would be the choice. Baylor was probably the only thing that made it difficult for me to go EDP at Tech.

With that said, I still think Tech is a great school and I've met a number of high level and very prominent doc from Tech (practicing here in Austin).......... still a bit jealous though 😉

Geevec and Spumoni, I see you feel the same as I did about Baylor!

I guess we'll all be sitting by the phone on Oct. 15 with our fingers crossed! I don't know which is worse, the rolling admissions roller coaster (did I get in this time???) or just sitting around waiting for Feb 1...

Spumoni, I'm not sure if this is what you were asking, but Baylor doesn't accept anyone (other than EDP) until Oct 15. They take one group on Oct 15. Then they add in new interviewees, reshuffle, and accept a new bunch every two weeks. (thus the roller coaster aspect)

I think the waitlist starts in March, once they've filled all the seats.
Theresa

Hi TheresaW,
Yeah I fell in love with Baylor, its incredible (esp. considering Im from Houston, its been in my backyard the whole time!). I will be waiting anxiously on Oct. 15th as well, though they keep accepting ppl off the top of their list every 2 weeks. Yikes! Things are starting to get stressful. Nothing else we can do but keep doing our other interviews and hoping for the best. take care!

Hi all,

I just interviewed at Baylor and I personally didn't think that it was all that... well, ok, maybe the fancy name is kinda cool... but I have to say that I was more impressed with the medical students at the UT schools.

I was talking to a handful of Baylor MS1 and MS2 and these kids where all talking about how they will discover a cure for HIV, cancer, Alzheimer, blah... blah... ego-maniacs?

I guess the personality of the school didn't click with me. Baylor is no longer my first choice... Also, the medical student interviewer was awful... he had absolutely no personality skills and was a complete bookworm.

Really. Most people I talk to (non-med) think Baylor is in Wako😛

I really think that I might like living in Waco better than Houston!

I was in Waco last week and that campus is pretty awesome, great architecture. The head honcho has come under a lot of fire recently.

When I think of Houston, traffic, sweat and humidity come to mind. The major city attractions are great though....but I won't likely have time for many of those.

thackl,

how did the house hunting in Lubbock go? From the research I've done, it seems to have the lowest relative housing costs. More square feet for the buck.

i was in college station for A&M this past weekend, anyone there?

tech is awesome. i'm a first-year and i love it here. the faculty are awesome, extremely helpful & encouraging...and my class is great. anyway, if you have questions about tech, feel free to pm me.

I have a home under contract. Inspection is this Friday and closing is next month. Lubbock is interesting when it comes to home hunting. There are very few native trees, so if you want big trees in your yard, you go inside the loop for older homes (pre-1960). The issue here is you can find a great street, go one block, then you're on a not-so-great street. Go for new homes, you get no trees (like the sub-div grew up out of a corn field). We opted for the Prest-Smith area. It's established enough that the trees are above the roof-tops, but new enough that you can drive block after block and not see anything run-down. It's just outside the loop in the south-west corner. About 7.5 miles from Tech and a 10 min drive. My brother has a house inside the loop and 3.2 miles from the UMC (very nice to be this close).

The bottom line is that it takes less than 10min to get anywhere in Lubbock (even during rush hour), so live where you want if you get accepted there. Here is my house:

http://lubbockmls.risco.net/Paragon/ListingPictures/LUBBOCK/1/LUBBOCK9924701.JPG?115225869

Can't see it, but big/covered front porch, 450sq-ft family room, catheldral ceilings, basement, irrigation sys, lots of ornemental mouldings....... you get the idea😀

I would like to meet a few of you 1st yr SDN'ers at Tech. I'll be out a bunch doing house stuff on weekends and moving perminently this December. Until, Feb 1st, I am the only member of the 2008 class:clap:

I'll be in Lubbock Tuesday night to Wednesday....Maybe we'll be in the same class Thack!.....😱

I'll also be at College Station on the 2nd and in Galveston on the 24th ........................Anyone else???🙄

*sigh* I can't wait for my interview (well, at least I hope I get one), but I have to get everything up and rolling first. I'm just about done...... 😀

bump, any new news?

gleevec, a little advice sir... my TMDSAS app was processed and sent out on 7/30 and all my secondaries and necessary things were sent in prior to that date etc, i got two interviews these past two weeks from UTH and A&M but haven't heard from other schools yet? is it a matter of just being patient as in there's still plenty of time or?? any advice on this angle?

I recently heard from Texas. I have interviews at UTSW, UTSA and UTMB. This was more than I expected since I'm from out of state (east coast) but I've heard nothing from Baylor, A&M or UTH. Does this mean they are not interested or do they have their own schedules?

It looks like at least three separate trips to Texas. Does anyone know how that works? Sir Gleevec perhaps? Also does anyone know how soon after interviews UTSW decides?

Texas schools are still in full swing in terms of interviews. Congrats on UTH and A&M!!! They tended to be the earlier inviters if i recall correctly. I think more invites are on the way, I wouldnt start getting nervous about interviews until after Halloween-- things really are in full gear. UTSW takes the longest to get back to students, maybe due to sheer volume of applicants? Plenty of time left though, we are in the middle of the 2nd quarter of football as far as interviews go =)

Haha Im not Sir anything, Im not even british and Im only 21 and dont know crap!

First off, congrats on so many TX interviews since you are out of state, its quite the feat. UTSW and Baylor are most likely to accept you out of state. Definitely go to these interviews (UTSW as already offered, Baylor when you hear from them).

Baylor interviews every 2 weeks, so there is a huge gap between waves of invities. Theres still plenty of invitations left to send I believe, since only 3 interview sets have been scheduled so far (out of maybe 12ish?). So plenty of time.

The match for all TX schools (sans Baylor) is Feb. 1st. So anything before that in terms of interviewing is fine.

Well, I'm not Sir Gleevec but I can answer the question about the UTSW decision timeline! Do I get to be Lady Theresa?

The TX schools (except Baylor) have a match system. The match day is Feb 1st. My understanding is that most schools sort of give an evaluation of their interviewees as they go along. After the interviews are done they rank all their "acceptable" students and give that info to TMDSAS.

In a nutshell, you won't hear anything until Feb 1st!

Theresa

Thank you Sir Gleevec and Lady Theresa.

So as far as you know, is there any advantage to interviewing earlier at UT?

I could get used to that, you know! 😉

We were told that the interview dates didn't really make a difference since we all go in the same "pot" at decision time in January.

I dont think there is, except for at UTSW where they stated that more people out of the earlier group are accepted. But it all ends up depending on the match anyway, so its probably not too big a deal.
