TEXAS Med Schools Entering Class 2004 Applicant Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks for the explanation.

I was surprised to see UTH up there, but then again they do have the Texas Med Center, and I'm sure that plays a large role. I can't say I'd put it second after the smuggness I received through all my interviewers, but the students were extremely nice.

The thing that makes UTH third aside from the TMC is the fact that its directly associated with MD Anderson, the best cancer center in the world. If I recall correctly, you can do some of your Meds rotations there and their match list there is pretty good.

For what its worth, which may not be much to a lot of SDNers, UTH is ranked in the research category and does have the only Nobel Prize winner in Houston.

interesting...didn't know that.

i have to say, when visiting uth i was definitely impressed. i think it was the talk by the dean. his talk was one of the best - most inspiring/sincere - i've heard in my rounds of interviews thus far. one thing that was funny though, was that the students spent a lot (and i mean a LOT) of time on the tour talking about resources/options for students who were failing out or having academic problems. as though it was a pretty common thing. but maybe i'm reading too much into it...

The kind of medicine you want to practive will be more molded by your residency experience.

Well, I'd defend my ranking UTH after UTSW, but I think Gleevec covered that for me. Thanks! And no, I wasn't considering Baylor. Only the TMDSAS schools.

The TX Med Center is a big deal when it comes to ranking the schools. Exposure to MD Anderson and Hermann Hosp. is worth a lot.

Huh, that's funny. I would also rank the Texas schools Baylor, UTSW, UTH (of course, YMMV, depending on personal considerations and areas of interest), but I was really, really dismayed by the dean's talk at UTH. It didn't seem like he had prepared at all, and was just about 25 minutes of him rambling. He also made a comment about how the boys interviewing could pass the time playing basketball and the girls could play bridge. Dude, no one that I know even knows how to play bridge. Not only was the comment pretty sexist, but about 35 years too late.

Anyway, I'll probably still rank Houston first (although I'll cry about it, since I really, really prefer UTSW), but I wish that I had had a better experience there.

By the way, Spumoni, I tried to PM you, but your mailbox is full. PM me when you clear it out.

If you prefer UTSW, then you should rank it first. Based on the match, it is best if you choose schools based on your own order of preference. The med schools do not see what order you rank them in until after the match has taken place, so its ALWAYS in our best interest to rank schools based on the order in which we would like to attend them.

😱 wow, did we have different deans speak to us or something? that sounds way out of line. the person who spoke to us talked about motivations for entering medicine, the hallmark of good physicians, and gave several inspiring stories about the practice of modern medicine. no mention of basketball/bridge...and definitely no rambling! weird...

anyway, i wholeheartedly second gleevec's opinion on your ranking. definitely don't rank utsw below uth if you prefer utsw. to my knowledge there isn't a "correct" ranking - it all depends on where you felt most comfortable.

oh and btw i cleared my inbox 🙂

Well, at the point at which we are ranking schools, we are not looking at how good a school is for an individual but how well it is perceived overall. So naturally, US News comes into play (whether this is good or not, I dont know, but since we are ranking schools, at least US News has a methodology, whether we agree with it or not).

I wasn't referring to individual preferences. US News ranks by research $$ and % going into family practice. I'm sure reputation is in there somewhere, but it is obscured by all the other stuff. Just considering gpa, the middle 4 (after Baylor/UTSW) are close. TTU/UTH virtually the same, followed very closely be TAMU with UTSA behind them.

I personally, was very disappointed with the office staff and admissions people I spoke with at UTH (I've heard it gets much better once you're past those folks).

I agree that one should see all the schools and see which is the best fit.

Actually, I'll be ranking UTH first due to personal considerations, not for tricky-me strategy reasons. Thanks, though. Hopefully I'll be joining y'all at Baylor, and this will all be a very moot point. 😉

I dont think GPA is a very good criterion for judging the quality of a medical school at all. MCAT is slightly better, but still not good.

In all honesty, for students, the "residency director reputation score" is probably the only part of the ranking that should matter. Most of the other stuff deals with the research environment that the PhDs and MDs work in.

Also, I agree completely that it is an individual's personal experience that determines their ranking. Im just talking about the schools abstractly. Nor should what Im saying be confused with me recommending a school over another-- far from it, its more about gut feeling and where you want to be than it is the amount of NIH funding a school receives.

Any August MCATers stillwaiting for an interview?

i havent heard anything back yet. my application was processed on 10/23. anyone know what the turnover is like on the applications?

For what its worth, I didn't have a good experience at UTH either (nothing to do with the Dean). The thing is I live in H-Town now and really want to stay, and its a little too late for me to apply to Baylor. I love the Med Center and all the opportunities that comes along with it. Maybe I just caught them on a bad day. Hopefully I'll have a change of heart, and change my mind about the schools ranking.

How long does it usually take? Submit app, then 4 weeks, then sent to schools, another 4 weeks? When are the last interview dates?

I've had my stuff done since early October....

not a word so far.

This is the one that says, "In your own words, explain your motivation to seek a career in MEDICINE. Discuss your philosophy of the medical profession and indicate your goals relevant to the profession." Anyone have a few minutes to spare? I can PM it to you.

I will, sparkles. Send it on.

Thank you Holly. Give me a second. Anyone else?

Well, I'm going to bed for the night. Anyone from TX preferably- PM me if you would read my essay for TMDSAS. This is the LAST THING! lol (yes I know I'm late, but this is it!!!!)
Sorry I'm so needy but I don't know who else to have read it!🙁

Hey Spumoni -- your mailbox is full again! Popular girl. . .

OK this is a stupid situation to be in, but somehow I managed to get myself into it.

MY TMDSAS applicaiton was complete way back when, and I've received two interviews from the Texas schools. However I get this postcard from Texas Tech saying that my application is not complete. WTH?!?

I look up both the TMDSAS and the TTU application status pages, and sure enough everythign is golden.

I call TTU, they say they have yet to receive a letter of recommendation from Dr. XYZ. Even though it shows that Dr. XYZ's LOR was received by TMDSAS way back when.

Oh well, Dr. XYZ will have the LOR sent out today, but how the heck did TTU not get the LOR in the first place...

Weird 🙄
Maybe it has something to do with Halloween this week...

Hey everyone:

I just received my first interview invite: UTSA, on Nov 10th
That's a great sign, 'cause it's also the Marine Corps birthday! Hopefully there'll be more interviews to follow.

Congratulations, trauma_junky! You deserve it! How'd you come to find out that UTSA would give you an interview soon? Have you been calling them to ask your status? Are they good about telling you what's going on with your application?

Way to go, TJ!!!! That cold front is the harbinger of good tidings!

I established a good working relationship with some of the admissons personel at UTSA and they have been nice enough to keep me up to date on my file status. It took a while though, my TMDSAS was complete on 6/18.

Fantastic news trauma junky. You certainly deserve it. Good Luck!

Ci. My last TMDSAS LOR should have landed today. I know TAMU put me on hold b/c of this LOR, maybe others too.

Trauma junky, big congrats on the interviews!!! Nothin' like a well-timed cold front.

Ortho, hang in there. Hope you will be hearing from the schools very soon! (stoopid LOR writers making people wait 😡 )

Theresa

Congrats trauma junky! i know you've been waiting for this. you'll knock em dead at tamu (but is utsa your top choice school?)

Congrats, Trauma Junky! Hurray!

congrats on the interviews everyone!!!

How does TCOM (UNT Fort Worth) rank in relation to the allopathic schools? I'm looking for opinions here, not research $$ or grant $$ rankings.

I've heard the anatomy lab is outstanding, but in education quality, where does TCOM fit in?

not really answering your question, but the lab is sweet......

well folks, its two weeks past the 15th. isn't baylor supposed to be calling again today? scary. *shiver*

I believe TCOM is ranked somewhere in the middle of the Texas schools.

Congrats on all the interview invites everyone, anyone interviewing at TAMU on 11/13.

Wheat, rice & Cheese, black beans, BBQ sauce, pico, guac, lettus and extra cheese, oh ya now they have garlic! MMM! can't wait!

edit: I forgot the most impotant part, STEAK!!!!

Yo, TJ!

Where're you hanging your hat these days? I know that Freebirds has places in Houston and Austin...

And still, it's been a long time. Chipotle just can't compare.

Evo

I'm in San Antonio Tuesdays-thursdays, and I'm in houston fri-mon.

I found the one in H-town, 59 and shepard, but of all places, the houston location just can't role a tight one, lol! I had one in College station last year when the T-sips kick our a$$ on Kyle field. Man it was the best thing about that day.

Wow. Contorted schedule. 🙂

Yeah, that was a great day for me (being a Longhorn) but not for my g/f (Aggie). Esp. since she'd been talking trash ALL year...

But, this year's TX team looks like a bunch of pansies.

Sigh......

And it seems like the players are being more active off the field than on. You heard about Benson's trouble and apparently 2 players got charged this morning or yesterday for some other crime.

No interview invites yet . . . but I did receive TTU Alumni invite yesterday by mail for Dallas. If anyone else is going from DFW, I'll see you there.
