TEXAS Med Schools Entering Class *2005* Applicant Thread part 01

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I called TMDSAS today to ask what the Last Master File Update indicates, this is the response: It reflects any sort of change, whether it be in address, changed grades, Fall semester grade input, etc.

The interesting part is that it also reflects the communication between the Med School and TMDSAS...the med schools let TMDSAS know when they interviewed you. TMDSAS keeps their own track of everything I guess.

I had my interviews in late November, therefore it made sense that my last master update was: 12/13/2004...probably gives the med school enough time to notify TMDSAS.

So yall should see a change in it, it's a good thing.

Damn these theories!
I was a completely sane person before I read this thread!
Cheers,
Pagal

I think they're talking about Validation Dates and not Last master File Update. I have had changes to the Last Master File Update a few days to a week after each of my interviews, so I just think they put that in there so TMDSAS knows you showed up and they can match dates with the dates you put for the match. I'm going to have to call shens on the Validation date change having to do anything with acceptance or good chance of it. Unless I see some consistency, there is no point to worry about it.

... or maybe I'm just saying that b/c mine didn't change 🙂

I agree with others that speculation at this time is somewhat moot. However, I will also agree with you that I seriously doubt the "Validation date" means anything whatsoever in terms of who will match and where. It doesn't seem that anyone has any hard data to support a correlation, so maybe best to kick back this holiday season with a cup of cocoa (away from the computer).

OMG, i just finished listening to Beethoven Symph #5 (2nd mvt) and I almost cried! We played that piece in orchestra when I was in college! Oh i miss it so much, I wish I was still in college and not WORKING!!! 🙁

I feel your pain UTKB. Working sucks! I miss school so much!!!

Aaahhhh! The student life......to be able to enjoy a pretty afternoon outside, the lack of predictability in your daily schedule, to not be bound by 8-5 working day rules. 😍

For you lucky college students, I know finals suck! But then you get a month off. A WHOLE MONTH!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😀 Enjoy it friends!

Well, that's reassuring. I was thinking that TMDSAS had already communicated with the medical schools and that is why they were changing dates. I mean, come on, I'm sure that there are those out there who might have average stats, but interviewed very well at a few schools and will still match. How dare they try to get ahead of the medical schools? It seems like it would be a big, fat waste of time to put validation dates in BEFORE the match, as some qualified candidates might not match and some less qualified candidates might match despite their mediocre stats. Geez, this whole Texas application system is driving me nuts! And IF our validation dates change, we can't expect to match simply from TMDSAS' predictions. But now that I know about it, I'm probably going to be checking my application status everyday....that's what I get for being an obsessive-compulsive perfectionist! 😱
Hi AsianDoc!

This process makes us crazy, doesn't it? Hence my signature

I think TMDSAS is trying to decrease the stress of their workload after the match. I suppose I can't blame them but it sure would be nice if they knew that this lack of control we all have is driving us NUTS!

By the way, you have great stats! You're already in somewhere so you know what you are going to be when you grow up. 🙂 I'm sure you'll do great here too!

Hey do you guys think I should send a letter of interest to a school I've already been intervied at? And would it be better as a email or a snail mail letter?

For those interested in UTHSCSA, there is a State of the School Address given by Dean Wartman on 12-9-04 at http://som.uthscsa.edu/.

Skip to about minute 20 if you would like to hear about some curriculum changes. That portion is brief.

That sounds like a great idea....I'm glad I'll be at my mom's in SA b/c her computer is pretty crappy so we don't turn it on very often. If not, I'd be checking the TMDSAS website and then SDN to see whose validation date changed. LOL.

Hey guys i'm DrateR | ******! Thats right, I'm a non-superimposable mirror image! Cool huh? :wow: So, it's 3:30 in the morning and can't sleep. I just can't stop thinking about medical school! I'm about to explode -- please help?! Happy Holidays (yea, right!)

Well I'm driving down to Galveston today for my interview tomorrow. After that it's 3 interviews in 5 days: Galveston Friday, San Antonio Monday, Tech Wednesday.

Anybody else have any of these dates?

Last year it was a plastic Texans face mask. Yesterday, it was battery operated self mixing coffee mugs (still baffled as to why one would need these, let alone a 6 am trip to the store to get fresh batteries for my coffee mug)......Thank god I'm going to medical school as I don't think I could take one more year of being screwed at my office's gift exchange.

On a more positive note--Today I put in notice to quit my job!!!!! (hasta la vista cheapos!!!) I have been looking forward to this day since I began the transition from my current profession into medicine and can't believe it has come.

One more milestone down.....
Next Milestone: Texas Match 1 February 2005!!!!!!!

btw, Congrats to those graduating this December.

UTHSCSA is going to be a ghost town - all the MS1s and MS2s have finished their exams so no one will be around. I bet the other schools will be the same way, which is a shame cuz you won't get to meet hardly any of the students.

Best of luck!

For my office gift exchange I got these four Betty Crocker candles in a kit 😕 . I saw them at Wal-Mart when I was shopping, and they cost a whopping $10. One of my coworkers got a NASCAR beer mug with cocoa mix inside  ! It was funny cuz I heard him making fun of NASCAR just a few days earlier. When he opened it, he was like, Oh thanks, it's soo cool! LOL.

That's awesome you get to quit! Me? I get to work right through the summer up til the time I will move to go to med screwl 🙁 . Another 7 months 👎 .

Yeah I'm pretty disappointed in that, but I guess as an August MCATer, what did I expect? All I can do is learn as much about the schools as possible before going I guess.

Luckily, for my UTHSCSA visit I will be staying with a good friend and neighbor growing up--she's an MS3.

Here's to another 7 months of the grind! Cheers!!

I really hope I will like being a doctor... We're complaining about working during a year or so off. Just think about all the years we'll be working after finishing residencies. I hope I'm lucky enough to enjoy it so the years will fly by instead of grinding by!! 🙂

Last Master File Update: 121604 :scared: :scared:

All my interviews were really early, except I had one in early November.....

Yah, my last master file update was 121004, but my validation date still reads 000000. At least my application is seeing SOME action! Honestly, I wish I didn't even know about these dates. Oh well!

No use worrying guys! It's christmas season...I figure this is a great time to just "forget" about medical school...and by the time winter break is over (for those still in undergrad), the day of importance will only be like 3 weeks away.

Okay, new topic: Christmas presents!

For my parents, us four kids all chipped in to buy them a flat-panel computer monitor.

For my two brothers: designer sweaters (purchased @ deep discount from Ross)

For my bf: a badass Fossil watch

For my nephew: Smithsonian crystal growing kit (he's into rocks n stuff)

For my sis: nothing yet, still looking.

but then you go back to school and the nights and weekends are no longer yours. you spend your free time you do have thinking about how you should be studying and feeling guilty because you aren't for a long time. that and you no longer have an income or the ability to schedule vacation whenever you want.

enjoy WORK while you can 😉

work shmirk....totally overrated

I LOVE my new job. 1000x better than the old place. Not having to worry at night (what SeaBass said) is GREAT.

Same thing happened to mine and before that it had 121004. 😕

Hey, can you guys offer me some advice. I really like UTMB, I got a great impression of the school during my interview. If I want to send them a letter of interest, which person on the administration should I send it to and should it be an email or snail mail?

heh!

I like the craziness of the student life better. I suppose it's the predictability of the 8-5 work life that really gets to me. That and the Secret Santa gift exchanges at office parties.

One year I got a Willie Nelson Christmas tape....hmmmm.

Better than the Hulk Hogan CD which I once got as a white elephant gift. It includes the classic, "Hulkster in Heaven"

About RCW Update: does anyone know what "RCW" stands for or what it might mean?

There have been a lot of changes of dates on my status page. 😕

RCW = Record of College Work

Did you send in updated transcripts?

UTKB said:
No, the transcript I sent in was my final transcript.

TMDSAS is a big mystery.
They just validated you, right? Maybe it has something to do with that. Validating means that they verify your app with your transcripts. Maybe it's part of your validation.

Yay! A similar pattern! My last master file udpate changed today to 121604 but before that was 121004. I hope this means good things for us, Jess!

Has anyone heard a peep from Texas Tech combined MD/MBA program?

They are supposed to cut loose some invites in mid to late December.

Anyone love from Lubbock?

It would be much better for you if you could get someone *else* to write a letter for you - like another letter of rec from a work supoervisor or professor. If you got someone to write to the admissions committee saying that they knew UTMB was your first choice and your very committed to succeeding, it would get a lot more attention.

Otherwise, if you have something specific to offer (like great MCAT/ GPA, special status, new publication), you could write Dr. Lauree Thomas. This is the address you are supposed to use for all correspondence to UTMB:

Lauree Thomas, M.D.
Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Admissions
301 University Blvd.
Galveston, Texas 77555-1307

You could also try writing to another dean or just addressing it "Admissions Committee" instead of to Dr. Thomas (it may or may not get farther).

But really your best bet to get another LOR to write directly to UTMB to tell them of your interest.

Man, my coworkers usually have a fun white elephant where you can steal other people's gifts. Last year evidently two mothers were nearly brought to tears because they wanted the same toy for their kids.

This year I had everything planned out to inspire the Christmas carnage... a basket with a big stuff animal for the moms to fight over, lotions for the women (or guys to give to their wives), and a starbucks gift card for the caffeine addicts to duke it out over. But then the Boss says the room we're using for the party is too small, so somehow that means we can no longer steal gifts.

That's bullocks! 🙁 Now it won't be nearly as fun.

Which reminds me, I should remember to "borrow" a biohazard bag to wrap up my gift. 🙂

I just interviewed there yesterday, and they told me that they are meeting sometime next week. The calls will be made before Christmas. *hoping we get some good news for Christmas..it's such a great program.... :scared:

Something else to feed our TMDSAS status page neuroticism to report. Why? Because it's entertaining :meanie:

My Master File Update has changed twice in the past two days. This in addition to Validation Date changing and RCW Update changing.

I don't see why they don't all change in one day and just stop changing. I don't want them screwing around with my application 50 times! Yikes. :scared:

Okay, so I just made two calls....one to TMDSAS and one to UT-San Antonio. I asked the lady at TMDSAS what all of the dates changing meant....she said that they didn't have anything to do with the match, only with udates (classes, transcripts, etc). I don't know if she was lying or trying to be purposely sneaky, but I think we're all getting worked up over nothing.

The lady at UT-San Antonio told me that she couldn't check on anyone's status individually; only that all of the interview invites had been sent out (duh). Too bad I've been in Houston for the past two weeks with all of my mail on hold in Austin. I guess I'll find out for sure once I get back to my apartment in January.

Basically, no one was able to tell me anything definitive, and I feel like I'm back at step 1 (with the Texas system, at least).
