TEXAS Med Schools Entering Class *2005* Applicant Thread part 01

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You guys crack me up.

Asian.....it's not over until it's over. Your SA day may yet come. :luck:

Okay, honestly, I'm not a cocky or stuck-up person. I'm just trying to understand why I've heard back from almost all of the other schools and not San Antonio. Maybe I've been listening to rumors or I've been influenced by what Indy has said. I'm trying to make sense out of something that I shoudn't be making sense of. I'm sorry if I offended you or anyone else, but I'm just really worried because I'm interested in San Antonio, especially since others have said how much they enjoyed interviewing there. So I'll offer this instead: I'm probably just an average applicant, and they can't interview everyone, so I'll just get over it. I'm just a little hurt right now....shouldn't have posted what I did 🙁 Have had a LONG day of research/class/work....and this is just upsetting me more....
I think your concerns are valid; furthermore, you weren't being cocky. If you can't speak honestly here, lest you upset the SDN populace, then something is wrong, and it's not you.

Its all good! I know how you feel--I haven't heard back from a few schools too, and I start to think why? You are a great applicant and I know you'll be alright. SDN is definitely a place we should be allowed to vent and be neurotic 🙂 But we can keep each other grounded and in check at the same time. 😀

Good luck all 👍 :luck:

To those of you that interviewed at places last week...

please post your interview feedback!!!

havent given up hope on SA here yet. if ur worried bout it , just give em a call. theyll be more than happy to let ya know im sure.

Sorry if this is a silly question but I'm confused about LORs. Do you have to have LORs submitted to TMDSAS to be considered 'processed?'

The reason why I am asking is because next year, when I apply, I'd like to finish my application ASAP, however, I'm short a letter. Therefore, I will probably have to take a course over the summer for this reason alone and won't have my last letter until late August at best. Will this push my application back?

Thanks so much and good luck to everyone in this cycle!!!

If you check out TMDSAS's website (I think under "Timeline") it states that they don't wait for supporting docs to process your app, I think.......check it out for yourself to be sure...

txguy: Yep, you're right! I think I was getting confused about the difference between being processed and having your application complete. Makes much more sense now. Thanks!

so you didn't get an interview...it happens to a lot of people. no need to be bitter.

and for the record, it's "UTHSCSA"

oh lane, picking on the premeds eh? so this is what you do instead of studying for phase eh? :meanie:

haha, i was wondering which one of us was finally going to make the comment about UTHSCSA or, UTHSCSASSASACASA which is how one of my friends refers to it

and asiandoc, try not to worry about it too much. i had my UTHSCSA interview over two months after my app was processed. hopefully it will come as a nice surprise in the time after you're done with all the rest of your interviews. you already have several and after all, you can only end up with one in texas right? 😉

txguy, when was your application complete for NYMC? I applied there, so I was wondering about how long it takes from them to review files.

To be fair when I worked there, there were times I called it UTSA just to make things simplier. People knew what I was talking about and didn't make a big dea l out of it. When talking about it just called it the health science center so that eliminated letters. UTSA, UTHSCSA it's all the same thing when talking about the med school. It's not like there's another med school in San Antonio to confuse it with.

Its in my email files on my laptop at home, so I'll post later on when I was complete....I think it was around 8/12...

Congrats txguy!

Got an interview for Saint Louis on 9/28! =)

I have it from an intimate source in the UT-Houston Admissions office that they do NOT coordinate with Baylor. Baylor does not play in TMDSAS or with any of the other Texas schools for just about anything. If you ask REALLY REALLY nicely with lots and lots of prior notice (and send flowers and chocolates 😛 ), they will schedule your interviews early in the day if you are interviewing at UTMB in the afternoon.

Also, UT-H doesn't use a computer to select whom they interview. The Dean himself actually reads the profile sheets, looks at grades, checks MCATs and Letters of Reference/Dean's Letter, etc and then tells the staff whom to send invitations. So, invitations for UT-H interviews may come a little later than other schools (they apparently strive for 2 wks notice, but sometimes come a little short). Also, that means if you get an invitiation to interview, you have a decent shot at getting in since the Dean has already had his look.

Other hints:
1. BE ON TIME. The letter says "arrive by 7:45" because that's when the day starts. It does not say ?arrive sometime around 7:45?. It is noticed who can't follow directions.
2. Parking sucks. Deal with it. The Texas Medical Center ain't a cow pasture with space all around to park your suburban/dualie/hot-rod lincoln for free. Plan ahead. Find the parking garage; find the med school; put $10 (yes ten dollars) in your pocket; all the night before. Remember, parking on the east coast is closer to $20-30 per day, if you can find it.
3. Take the silly tag off your jacket sleeve. You look like a goober. What it also shows is that: a) you just bought it because you weren?t prepared to interview this year and were surprised by the invitation, b) are overly label conscious and want everyone to know you own the latest J.Lo design, or c) you don't have the attention to detail to remove a label. And does anyone want a doctor with poor attention to detail?
4. You're an adult. You get dressed in the morning without Mom and Dad (hopefully). You go to school without Mom and Dad. You go on dates without Mom and Dad. Don't bring them to your interview. Spouses on the other hand are VERY WELCOME at UT-Houston Interview Days. There is even a small-group session on Families and Medicine most days. After all, spouses are who gets you into and through medical school, so they should be involved in the process, right?
5. You're still an adult. Clear directions are given to your interview locations. No one will hold your hand to get there.
6. It says in the letter "wear comfortable shoes" for a reason. If you're interviewing with a doc from MD Anderson, the Mental Sciences Institute, Texas Heart, or TIRR, you'll probably interview there, which can be a little hike from the Med School building (but worth it to see the facilities available!). But, if your feet get messed up, ask the Admissions staff (nicely... remember the flowers and chocolates?)... sometimes, they have mole-skin/band-aids/etc.
7. Why complain about the food? It's free, right?
8. It's southeast Texas. It's hot outside. You may go outside. Be prepared.
9. It's southeast Texas. It rains a lot. You may go outside. Be prepared.
10. Medicine is a fluid enterprise. Your interview day will be too. Doctors get stuck with patients. Researchers get stuck in the lab or class. The medical world doesn?t stop so that a pre-Med can interview. Take that extra time to come up with a better answer to ?why do you want to be a doctor? than ? I like science and want to help people.? Or come up with an insightful question of your own for the interviewer

Anyway... this has kind-of turned into a rant, but hopefully it'll help a few folks out.

Great post! I feel a lot better now since a UT Houston invite has been the only one I've gotten so far. It's probably going to be my top choice, but then again I would feel a lot more reassured if I had other invites 🙁.

Nice work, congratulations are in order! Is SLU rolling admissions? It would be nice to have an acceptance in hand before match day in February....I want to be like EvoDevo lol

Good luck! 👍

TMDSAS drives me crazy. I asked them to add an EC, and in two lines of writing I counted 4 typos!!!! I am going to look like an idiot to the adcoms. 😡 I asked them to correct them but they won't!!! 😱

On the plus side, I'm getting processed tomorrow. 😀

Hey!! You need to get on them....there is one last chance to change stuff on your application right before it gets processed.....I had a similar problem....they had a typo in a correction I asked for as well, but were able to change it right before transmitting to the schools.....call and email them......

Does anybody in this thread currently attend UTMB? I wanted to ask some questions....

I coudkln't find a "class of 2009" thread and the last post on the "class of 2008" thread was about a month ago or so....

Thanks!

Well, I finally received my UTHSCSA interview invitation today in the mail (for 9/20). My TMDSAS was processed on 7/28...so for those of you who haven't received an invite yet, don't worry. You should get them soon.

good deal

When you interview at UT-H, make sure you go to the Thursday night party at Two Rows. And you Dallas people give Houston a chance, you'd be surprised what a great city this is. Hope to see you at UT-Houston next year.

Congrats on the San Antonio interview!!

I just got an email from Tech!!!! I will be in lubbock on 9/15!! Anybody else? Is there a pre-interview social?

-tx

I am finally submitted, and now I begin to wait for TMDSAS to process the application. I am waiting on AUGUST MCAT so as long as I have the secondaries in before they come out, and my app gets verified I should be alright.

Nice to join this process and congrats on everyones interviews so far.

Congratulations txguy!

I was wondering, is it ok to bring a girlfriend/boyfriend to the UTH pre-interview social? How many people do this? I don't want to be the only one 😳.

Two Rows? I thought it was at Brian O'Neills? I better figure it out b/c I'm going this Thurs.

I still haven't received UTHSCSA letter for 9/20 and they said they sent it last week....you'd think East Texas was in another country. It takes mail forever to get here! 🙄

Its very informal, so I wouldn't see a problem bringing your significant other--however, they might feel left out when you are asking the med students questions about med school and stuff....it might be best to just go by yourself so you can engage everyone and get the full experience? I dunno, its no big deal either way--very informal get-a-feel for the UTH atmosphere kind of event....

It was Brian O'Neills for me too.....I believe last year was Two Rows, but maybe they switch it all the time?

Anyway, they are right across the street from each other--both in rice village so its no biggie....

Good luck, I think you'll like UT Houston!

Neither have I. You'd think Houston was a world away. 😉

Congrats guys on UTSA! I called them this afternoon, but no luck....the lady on the phone told me that there is no specific turnaround time for apps/interviews, and that a later interview is not necessarily bad. Keep your fingers crossed for me.... 🙁

My UTMB invite took 5-6 days to get to Dallas. They said they mailed it on Mon/Tues and it arrived on Saturday! I guess it aint called snail mail for nothin lol

I was almost sorry that I called and found out about my interview ahead of time, because of the wait lol

Hang in there 👍

Definitely bring them. But beware that they have to be already RSVP'd to attend the interview day (and the Admissions Staff tries to keep guests to spouses/fiancees).

Awww...I wanted to invite my fiance, but since it said "spouse" I thought he technically wouldn't be able to come. Oh well, I need to start doing stuff on my own anyway. 🙂

Thanks a bunch txguy and Fosterchild, I'll keep that in mind. Yea I read it in the letter, don't worry I'll be coming by myself on the actual interview day. Around how many people are actually there? To the social I mean.

Are you going to be there tomorrow?

Have fun at UT Houston ya'll. I really think ur stressing too much about the social! At least ya'll will meet someone from SDN lol 😀

Good to know I'm not the only one awake right now!

Another thing I'd suggest--get there around 8 (or an hour after the gig starts). I got there right at 7, and people didn't really start crowding the place until 8. That was just my experience....I should have been "fashionably late" intead of "right on time."

I got my first interview invite on 8/31, and I was processed 8/25 by TMDSAS! I will be interviewing at UT Houston on 9/24. Anyone else have that interview date? Now that I got one invite, I'm anxious to get more... 🙂 But I'm just glad I got any...

Emily

Off to the TCOM interview. 😀

Congrats on your interview invite, Emily! 🙂 More good news is just around the corner, I'm certain. 🙂

I know this is not the form for it but I also know there is a lot of TX reapps on here as well. So has anyone recieved a "you suck" letter since you were not pulled off the waiting list? I was on TAMU's list and I know they started classes 2-3 weeks a go and I still have not heard from them.

Thanks, tx! I sent them an email late last night in a last ditch effort to get them to correct their typos, and they changed it!!! Woohoo! I must have reached a different person b/c the lady I talked to on the phone yesterday was like, no way are we doing it again. Anyway, my profile is partially filled in so I assume I'll be processed later today. Finally! Geez (33 days).

I haven't gotten any letters yet. I don't care if they do send any because I already know i'm not in. It's all good though. 👍
