TEXAS Med Schools Entering Class *2005* Applicant Thread part 01

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hope everyone's interviews went well yesterday! I sit at work on Friday's that I am not interviewing and the Texas Applicant thread is eerily quiet....

For those that interviewed at UT-SW last Saturday, did they have a happy hour, social like the other schools have had? I'm headed up there next weekend and can't find anything in the information sent (probably because there isn't one!)

Also, this is a subject that I've been thinking about a lot lately. Do non-Texas medical schools take a guarded approach to applications from Texas applicants? I've been talking with a few people about this lately and the general conclusion has been that these schools probably are hesitant to interview/accept Texas residents becuase we have such an abundance of great/cheap medical schools in Texas and would probably opt to go there. I don't know if this is true, but wanted to see what others' take on this was.

Have a great weekend!

Oh, and SFAJess, saw the pics of your pups in the lounge (at least memory serving they were yours). CUTE weiny dogs!

My interview at UTMB was spectacular! I am impressed by UTMB's innovative curriculum and dedication towards applying/integrating basic science concepts into clinical practice. If anyone has questions, just PM me.

Anyway, a friend of mine (from tx) interviewed at NYU last year and they basically said "why are you here? there are so many great medical schools in texas!"

So I would agree that out-of-state schools would be a little hesitant to hand out interview invites to us and the ones that do slip through will probably have a lower chance of acceptance than non-tx residents (unless you are a 4.0/38 person of course!)

So I'm going to go into my NYMC interview very relaxed and not expecting too much!

Thanks! 😀 One is almost 13 years old and the other is only 4 months old! They sure do keep things exciting around here.

Okay, my original post was dead wrong. I got an interview for UT-Houston today. I wonder why the Dean told me that 😕...oh well, I'm happy.

We were processed on the same day (9/1) and I haven't gotten an interview yet 🙁 :scared:

Howevery, it makes me feel better that you got one, being a reapplicant. I'm a reapplicant too and your original post freaked me out some. I still have hope 🙂

Everyone on this board is seriously stressing me out. My application is still getting processed and probably won't be done for a while and everyone who's already been processed is saying how late in the process they are. Am I really that late?

Well, yeah, you're getting to the point of being kind of late. However, you can't do anything about it; just try to get everything in as soon as possible, and as long as your application is good, it'll work out fine.

I have pretty good numers, but I have been getting out-of-state interviews at least. Now, when it comes down to offers of acceptance, it might be different, but I don't think Texas residency has hurt me so far.

Also, UTSW does have a night before thing. You should get an email closer to your interview date that looks like this...
We are excited about seeing you on the UT Southwestern campus this weekend for
your medical school interview. I wanted you to know that you are invited to

Yes, everyone is stressing out, including me. People who don't have interviews or only have 1-2 also seem to resent those who have more. This is a severely competitive application cycle, and I know that I need to watch more of what I complain about. As an example, I posted something on another thread indicating that I had more than 4 interviews total, and people began flaming me about it. I tried to explain that I was applying in Texas, but they just didn't seem to get it. I never knew that people would be so incredibly sensitive about all of this. However, I understand that this is a hectic time for ALL of us, no matter how many interviews we have. I also think that there is a tendency to become greedy. Once you get three interviews, you want four; when you have ten, you still want more....

Please remember that those of us who submitted earlier will have our own things to complain about. It's not meant to offend those of you who submitted later; its simply a way to voice our concerns. And believe me, a month down the line you'll have 5 interviews too....and will be wondering why you haven't heard from School X or School Y, etc. Oh, and please don't flame me for being completely honest about all of this....

ah, screw em. you dont need to apologize for that craziness on the other thread. thats part of the reason why i have trouble with my mdapps profile. i do think its helpful to some, but people start talking to you as if youre a set of numbers and nothing else (it sets a somewhat annoying first impression)

You're NOT late, don't let people tell you that you are. Submitting earlier only helps you get interviews, it DOES NOT improve your chances of getting in. Interview spots are limited and they have a large influx of applications to sort through and offer interviews to folks, so getting your app in earlier only helps you to avoid the influx. After you get an interview, it's up to your stats, ECs, LORs, and interview to actually get you in. Don't worry about it, you'll get ulcers. 😎

SO TRUE. If you submitted in October, that'd be another story....

Yep, biochem here as well.

Those tips in that thread are very helpful!

Do you have any of your own?

Nah no mneumonics, I just straight up memorized them. Took me a while and I haven't even looked at the abbreviations . I'm more worried about my TCOM interview on Tuesday. I have to leave tomorrow after class for a 4-5 hour drive, so I'm busy packin right now 🙁

I hear you!!

Biochem is not the best class to take while travling for interviews! At least most students in my class are also interviewing, so the professor is pretty understanding. I am playing catchup right now--trying not to think about my Tech interview Wednesday. 🙄

Good luck everyone. 👍

for biochem all you need is a whiteboard and some dry erase markers - just write everything (amino acids, mechanisms, pathways, etc.) over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and....you get the point 🙂

Ok so I'm probably being a little obsessive-compulsive, but right now I'm going on not 3 weeks of not hearing a thing from any of the medical schools I'm complete at... I heard something the first week I was processed, and then nothing... Should I be have heard something from the other TX schools by now if I'm going to, or should I give it a while longer before I get discouraged?

Emily, I don't think any one of us here at SDN can really say why applicant X gets 4 interview offers in a week and why applicant Y gets one interview invite a month. While there may be automatic interivew statistics, they are probably not the bulk of applicants. While it is difficult to do, you just have to realize that you have done everything possible at this point and now it is out of your hands--and that by no means should be discouraging. August MCATs don't come out for another month (and maybe even later due to the hurricanes in Florida causing them to test on a later date), and your application is ahead of that crowd. So, don't get discouraged now--be excited--you are pursuing your dream. Best of Luck in the process and I hope you hear something soon from the other schools.

Maybe double check (for piece of mind) that you are indeed complete and "ready to be reviewed by the adcom" at the schools--you may find out that you are invited to interview! Also, make sure your junk mail filter is set to "low" or turned off completely if possible--I missed my UTH email due to junk mail filtering 🙁

And after you have checked this, like runner said, its out of your hands. But feel free to vent in this thread if need be 🙂

-tx

Yes! By all means vent in this thread. That way we can keep our obssession with the TX schools away from the rest of pre-allo....where they'd kill us. 😉

Good news for everyone this week!

Hey, we were talking last week about the Tech status page and I just checked and I am complete there finally. My last three items (secondary signature page, the fee and the LORs) are showing as complete as of 9/10/04. Nevermind that I sent the fee and sig page back in June!

Also, I e-mailed UTMB on 9/02/04 asking if my app was complete since their Quik Check is less than useless. I got a reply saying they had received my app from TMDSAS, so I'm hoping I hear something from them soon.

Mine still says incomplete. 🙁 Maybe it will take a few days!

Probably. I did e-mail them, but never received a reply. I just happened to check and there it was.

Hey Aidan, thanks for the info. Mine also mysteriously says complete for 9/10 (turned it all in back in July).

👍

Anyone know how long it takes the adcom at San Antonio to make a decision for interview after your file gets reviewed? I called them today and my status was something like "file reviewed, no action yet taken."

I had an interview invite something like three-four weeks after my TMDSAS was complete.

Hope this helps.

What is the Quik Check address for UTMB. I couldn't find it on their website.

SFAJess said:
Does y'alls say no application too?
This is the only link that I've been able to find. And yeah, it says "no record found." Anyone gotta clue? 😕

SFAJess,
Mine does say no applications found, which is why I e-mailed them and they did reply that they have my file from TMDSAS.

The E-connect/Quik Check may be just for the Nursing/Allied Health. I had seen a posting about it in this thread where someone actually called UTMB and was told about this online status check. Dunno what to tell you, maybe call the Admissions office again to see if that page includes apps to the SOM?

Bump to the top!!

See ya'll in Lubbock tomorrow for whoever's going....

my app. was processed in july but i still haven't heard anything on i-views. i'm so stressed! i called the schools at the end of july and they had all of my info., but still no interviews. does this mean that my time has passed and i won't be getting any?

No. I applied one year in the summer super early and didn't get an interview till Dec.

I suggest calling the schools again and ask about your status. It wouldn't hurt since last time you checked was back in July.

Hey guys,

I would like some advice. I earlier received an interview at Baylor for a Friday and I already confirmed that date. Now, I got something from UT Houston for the same Friday and it says that it is the only date possible. Will UTH allow us to change interview dates if we call and explain or should I try to change with Baylor? Thanks for your help.

a) I know people have arranged to have UTH in the morning and UTMB in the afternoon, so you could apply this with UTH and Baylor since Baylor doesn't start until noon on Friday. You would just have to call UTH and request them to schedule your interviews in the morning session.

b) If i were going to try and reschedule one, I would reschedule the one that I would least like to go to. But, Baylor is on rolling admissions starting 15 Oct. so it would be advantageous to interview there at the earliest date you can get there (which is your assigned date).

Best of Luck!

Thanks for the info and advice. Does anyone know how long the UTH interviews usually take? I don't know if I would have enough time to get to Baylor if I do the two in one thing.

the only way to do this is if you call the admissions office and tell them whats up. baylors interview day starts late (at noon), so perhaps you can convince UTH to schedule for morning interviews if possible. if you dont call, then they'll stick you with random interview times.

stress to them that it will cost you a lot of money to have to come down twice.

*youll probably have a greater shot at this working if you tell them you have a UTMB interview later that day... so, take that for what its worth.

same thing happened to me 2 yrs ago and I had already confirmed the interview with Baylor when I received the UTH invite.

I emailed or called the UTH admissions office and explained i had already confirmed with someone else for that day. that weren't that friendly about it and offered me a new date in January. I almost blew them off, but I'm glad I didn't since they ended up being my #1 choice. I kindly accepted the new date and said if any new dates opened up due to cancellations I would gladly take one of those. the next day I got an email with a new opening, a week ahead of when I was supposed to interview originally.

Seems like this UTH/Baylor thing is happening to a lot of Texas peeps. I know that it is possible to schedule one school visist in the morning and one in the afternoon. However, I'd put more effort into the school that you'd rather go to....sure would be nice to get an early acceptance from Baylor 😉 Good luck!!!
