Hey guys,

I would like some advice. I earlier received an interview at Baylor for a Friday and I already confirmed that date. Now, I got something from UT Houston for the same Friday and it says that it is the only date possible. Will UTH allow us to change interview dates if we call and explain or should I try to change with Baylor? Thanks for your help.

The same thing happened to me. When I called the UTH office, they were friendly and told me that I could schedule a morning interview at UTH and be finished there by 11:30. I also asked when the next available interview date would be and they said it wouldn't be until January, so I decided to schedule a morning interview. When are you interviewing at UTH/Baylor? I'll be up there next week.

My scheduled date is October 8th. Do you think you can make it to Baylor within 30 minutes?

I just got back from a TCOM interview, my group had 3 guys and 12 girls 😱
Did you enjoy TCOM? If you have questions about Fort Worth, feel free to ask me! 👍

Okay, I know this was brought up last week, but I was wondering if anyone had heard from UTSW within the past two weeks? Getting a little frustrated....

I know I sure haven't... I haven't heard from ANYONE in the last two weeks... 🙁

I've been wondering that myself. For those of you who have called, do they actually tell you that you've already been reviewed? Or is that piece of information taboo? Because if you've been reviewed and you haven't received an invite, that means you didn't meet the criteria for first choice and they basically put you on hold, right?

Can anyone provide details for the UTH night before deal (time/location)? Or are we supposed to expect info from the school?

Danke

Fort Worth is a very cool place to live, housing is cheap and everything is close and easy to find. TCOM had very nice facilities and people. I would have enjoyed my day if not for the 4 1/2 hour drive back to Houston 🙁

I called every single school (including Baylor) and they said my application was under review. I got a little surprise when I called UTMB however and like txguy, I found out about my interview for 10/15! I got the snail mail a full week later.

Ugh. I know that drive well.

You're in H-town! You should come to one of the Houston get-togethers one day. 👍

I rec'd the same surprise when I called UTSA. I think that it's entirely dependent upon the offic staff person's mood that day.

Sweet. Things are gonna be busy this semester, but we'll look to do something in October/Nov.

How much of an influence (all things being equal) is it if you let it be know that a particular school would be your first choice?

Of course, this is still hypothetical in my case since I have YET to get any invites, but it is pretty important I stay in Houston for a variety of reasons. My husband's job is here and while he could get a similar job if we were to go to Dallas/Ft. Worth or even San Antonio, it would be hard on us if we ended up in Lubbock or College Station. My entire family lives here. Immediate and extended family, I'm Irish American - I have a huge family to offer not just moral support, but also practical support (I'm mainly thinking about childcare situations here).

I'm just wondering, if I let it be known how important it is I stay here, can this influence an admissions committee?

Hope everyone has great interviews this week!

I'm in the same position as you, ironically also in Houston, and definately see my family/friends as an asset.

I was speaking to my doctor (who used to be on the admissions committee at Northwestern's Feinberg) about this and he said that I should definately mention this in secondaries and/or interviews. Basically, he said that schools want to know that you will be successful in your medical education--and having a pre-existing support system is a definate consideration. As he put it, a student who is happy in their personal life will transition a lot easier and be a more successful student. Realistically, you still have to be a good candidate and a fit for the school, but this could be the piece of information that will nudge the admission committee to select you over another applicant.

Thanks, runner. I kinda thought that would be the case, but it's always good to hear confirmation.

I am so happy! I just got my first interview invitation today in the mail from UTMB for Oct. 15! Woohoo! I am so happy (I just said that)! 😀 I hope they let me in this time.... 😕

Inform your interviewers of this when you are at UT Houston. If you say its your top choice for X, Y, Z legit. reasons they are more likely to consider you.

If University of Houston is sending a "packet" of LORs to TMDSAS and my other schools will it look as if it's a LOR from University of Houston or should it specifically state each LOR? I told UH NOT to send the prehealth committee letter they wrote and that I wanted just the packet of LORs instead. I even signed a consent form that said I DID NOT want them to use the committee letter. The schools said this was fine. However when I see under the complete files that each school has received an LOR from University of Houston I'm a bit concerned. Does this mean....packet or committee letter....anyone else have this concern before I start calling schools?

hey

why don't you just call the schools to make sure. the schools aren't gonna count aginst you if you call em. right?

Congrats everyone on the interviews!!! 👍 👍

Glad to see some movement in here 😀

I just got back from the UTH social. Man, that place is really loud, I could only hear someone if they were standing right in front of me and my throat hurts from talking so loud 😳

Yah, it was very loud, especially since the night that I went, some Baylor students were there having their own little pow-wow. I interviewed at UTH on 8/27, and enjoyed the social. The students seem very friendly and agreeable. The funny thing was that all of the med students who showed up were guys--I think all of the girls were at home studying! Anyway, good luck on your interview tomorrow! You'll do great =)

My good friend went tonight...did you meet a tall red-headed girl who is not shy at all and very friendly named Autumn? Just curious! I was worried about her getting down there b/c she is kind of bad with directions and she doesn't venture out alone much.

BTW, good luck tomorrow!! :luck: :luck: :luck:

Thanks!! 😀

Tonight's social actually had pretty equal numbers of guys and girls. All the girls sat on the couches and talked to each other, while the guys were all standing around sippin beers

Hehe, thanks for the lucky clovers 😀 👍

I'm not sure, almost all of the girls were sitting down and talking to the other female MS2 students. There was this one girl who was standing and she was pretty tall..forgot what color her hair was hmm...

General question for everyone.... how long after your primary was processed and submitted to the schools did you get a interview letter or email.

I just wanted to say hello to all the other TX SDN folks out there. I've been reading the postings for the past few months, but just got the chance to log in.
Right now, I'm with the Dept. of Defense over in Germany. UTH sent me an invite for in interview in two weeks. Because of the logistics of coming back to the states on relatively short notice, I was debating on requesting that my interview be moved into Nov. Is this a bad idea?

I don't think it would be a bad idea since Texas schools aren't on rolling admissions. Congrats on the interview! 😀

I hear UTH is a little stingy on rescheduling, but I would hope they would work with you on your situation.

Are those YOUR feet?

Just did a quick check on my work schedule and airfare for that time. It looks like the flight between Frankfurt and Houston is only about $500. I'd fly out on Thurs and back on Sat...definitely not a vacation! I think I'd pass the jet lag on my way home. So rescheduling won't really be necessary.

LOL  Yeah, the feet are the ones I'm attached to. The pic was after a trail race in Utah this summer.

It really depends on what part of the application cycle it is. I think it's been slowing down lately, due to the sheer number of applications that all of the schools are now receiving. I was TMDSAS processed on 7/14 and heard back from my first block of schools--TCOM, A&M, UTH, and UTMB all in one week about four weeks after being processed. The others trickled in slowly, and it's been quiet for the past three weeks. For me, the interviews have come in spurts....not one at a time. Certain schools--Southwestern for sure--will give you an interview without completion of the secondary (if you have awesome numbers). Anyway, hope that helps....I know how hard it is to be patient; I think we're all getting really antsy about this whole darn process! Keep your chin up 👍

Ok...I know some of the SDNers don't respond well to the "Should I....? Q's, but I need some advice.

I applied to all of the TMDSAS schools except TCOM. I kind of want to apply to a few more through AMCAS so maybe I could increase my chances of getting in. The thing is I don't want to waste my money since it is so expensive to apply and I don't even know if it would increase the likelihood of getting in just b/c I applied to more schools. I have an avg MCAT, but I have a great GPA and EC's. Also, since I am now just considering applying through AMCAS b/c I finally have some money (love those difference checks from school! 😀 ), would it be too late since those schools are on rolling admissions?

I don't even know what schools I would apply to...

Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks for any help!
