Hey guys, hope interviews went well with you all... 😀

I have a question for you guys...as of rite now I have ranked my schools the following way:

1.UTSW
2.UT-Houston
3.UTMB
4.UTSA
5.A&M
6.Tech 😱

I'm not sure if I should rank UTMB over UT-Houston however...what criterion are most of u guys using to finalize ur rankings? Also, in terms of ranking or "prestige" of the Texas schools is there really a difference between schools like UT-Houston and UTMB? I heard UT-Houston is kind of stressful whereas UTMB is really chill...I'm really stuck between these two...any feedback would be helpful thanks!

hey,

I'm a 2nd year at UT-Houston and I randomly read your post. Just to add my two cents, I would probably say that the perceptions you have are fairly accurate, but not to the extent you imagine. You'll soon learn stress level is a lot more dependent on YOU than the school you're at. That said, it also depends on your learning style, if you're the kind of person who keeps up with things, UT-Houston won't phase you. One advantage of Galveston is that they only have one class at a time, whereas we generally have about 5. Anyone can figure out gross anatomy if that's the only thing you do for 6 weeks. So it's a good deal. Problems with Galveston are that even though its laid back, it may be too much so. My friends that are in their 3rd year there now have complained that the people that they originally thought were so much fun are now obnoxious and lazy now that they actually have to work with them. But I imagine that's true at all schools to some degree. Other cons for Galveston is actaully living there, it's one crappy island, expensive and crappy. All in all, I'm sure there are those that will disagree, but in my opinion UTMB was once a steller school, but is in its decline.
As for my own school I will admit the curriculum does not have the best layout, and the basic science years are frustrating at times. However,
my classmates are absolutley awesome and we're a super tight class. Some of my friends at other schools have not had quite the same experience. I cannot overemphasize the impportance of being compatible with your classmates. Even though pretty much anyone can be tolerated for short periods in class or the occasional lab, the same person is unbearable after 30 hours on call. One plus for UT-H is that the clinical years(really the core of a med school) are really good training at some of the best hospitals in the U.S. with top-notch docs. One the school's big selling points is that it's located in the biggest medical center in the world, which has it's good and bad aspects(traffic and parking are nightmare) but it still translates to good experience. As for the city, like most of Houston, it has its ghetto neighborhoods next door to million dollar condos, but there's nice areas nearby the med center and basically everything you need is within a 2-mile radius.
Well, I hope anything I said was helpful. My advice would be to talk to as many people from the different schools as you can to get a better picture AND take all of their advice (including my own) with a grain of salt. Good luck with decision and remember that most people end up happy with whatever school they get.
Cheers, Oompa

Nice post oompa!!

Hey guys, I found these tips on that TMDSAS match information page, just thought I'd post:

Rank the schools by 1st, 2nd, etc. choice and enter the date you interviewed at the respective school. Click the "SAVE" button (there is no Submit button) and this will SAVE your preferences.
Applicants may revise their choices or add a school at any time (Deadline is January 15, 2002) by simply changing the rank order of the schools on the Applicant's Preference For Schools screen.

Tips For Making Your Selections
DO NOT PANIC.
DO NOT try to "Beat the System".
DO NOT try to outguess the schools.
DO NOT base school ranking solely on "How you felt the interview went". The interview should be only one factor in your total evaluation process.
DO rank the medical schools in the order you wish to attend.

It looks like this is an old information page (2002), but I think the same rules apply.

Here's the link that stitch gave earlier, https://utdirect.utexas.edu/nlogon/mdac/MATCHP.htm#Posting

I liked the "DO NOT panic"

Good luck :luck:

Thanks txguy--that was a helpful and amusing post =)

Good luck to everyone as we prepare our final rankings. Now I'm wondering if I'd love the personal attention of TAMU more than the somewhat larger class of UTSA. Oh, the drama. 😳

It was nice to meet everyone on Saturday. There are some seriously cool people applying this year, and I look forward to having some of you as classmates next year. Too bad it can't be everyone. 🙁 Asiandoc, it was nice to put the person to the posts. 🙂 The guys were universally cool, and I really enjoyed the differing perspectives. 😀 UTKB and SFAJess, we missed ya!

Heheh. At this point it's like 80>>20 in favor of UTSA. I'm just trying to make sure that I'm not overlooking TAMU because of a perception bias. 😀

Then again, I do like the idea of a SDN posse @ UTSA. "Baack Siiiiiiiiii-ide!!"

*Flashes "SDN" in American Sign Language*

Boo! 🙁 San Antonio, baby...can't go wrong with that I've decided.

On a lighter note for EVERYONE. I failed to meet a single truly unhappy medical school student while I was out interviewing...nor do I personally know many who don't think their school is the best. That being said, I think its safe for me and many of you to assume that no matter where we match we're likely to be happy. That's why I'm not going to fret the way I rank the schools...I have what I think is a good ranking and I refuse to second guess it!

Now the only thing to fear is not matching at all 🙁

I went to medical school in Chicago, but I spent a month at UTHSCSA during my fourth year last December and I really liked it. The medical school is totally integrated into the hospital - you literally walk down the hall from the classrooms to the wards. I mostly saw the OR's because I was doing anesthesia, but I got a feel for the campus by having lunch in the cafeteria, checking my e-mail in the library, walking around, etc. The medical school may not be as "prestigious" as Houston or UTSW, but it is still solid.

Probably one of the best parts about UTHSCSA was San Antonio itself. San Antonio is an awesome city. Low cost of living, diverse people, lots of stuff to do, golf all year round. My wife and I were looking at houses and it is incredible what you can get down there - $166,000 for a brand new 3000 square foot 4 bedroom/3 bath house with a ton of ugrades was something we were looking at. $166,000 won't even get you the crappiest studio apartment in Chicago. (For poor medical students in San Antonio, apartments are reasonable too)

I know most of you are probably used to warm weather, but it amazes me how there is going to be a massive ice storm later on today in Chicago, but in San Antonio the high is going to be 80! My friends here say "Well, you have those awful summers down in San Antonio" and I say back "I never had to shovel heat or scrape heat from my car".

I'm doing my PGY-1 in Chicago and my anesthesia residency in Baltimore, but I'm going to San Antonio when I'm done. If I was a Texas resident when I applied to medical school, I would have been very happy to have gone to UTHSCSA.

Sorry I was a no-show Evo. There wasn't a way to get a hold of you ahead of time. I've been feeling so guilty about it, but here I offer my excuse: my bf and I got in a huge fight Saturday afternoon and so I was in no mood to go meet you guys. Not to mention I was all puffy in my eyes. We made up yesterday, so don't feel sorry for me. I feel like such a dufus for saying I'd be there and not showing up because I don't like it when people don't follow through with what they say they'll do.

Anyway, I am literally going crazy waiting for Feb 1 (and maybe Jan 15 a little). I keep changing my ranking from the one I posted a couple of weeks ago. I can't finalize a ranking that I'm happy with!!! On the plus side, I got some Tito's vodka (made in Austin) and some brandy cream liqueur that I'm saving for the night of Jan 31. :horns:

Texas is a very closed world. After teaching premeds in texas for 5 years, and now being away for a few, I can tell you that all it takes to get a feel for which schools are 'prestigious' is to go out of texas.

There are *NO* 'prestigious' texas schools. Maybe maybe maybe, you can talk about Baylor. Maybe.

The prestige that is bantied about by texans, texas medical students etc is only among the very small pond of texas schools/residencies.

The general attitude I have experienced (on both coasts) is hmmm, texas. There all good schools.

Texas schools have a solid reputation. We have an intern from UTMB. We have one from UTSW. There is very little difference in thier quality. I have interviewed fourth years from Harvard, John Hopkins, the caribbean, DO schools etc.

What makes a great canidate has VERY little to do with thier school 'name' adn has a lot more to do with things like 3rd year evals, LOR, publications and how they interact on the interview.

So, the one piece of advice I would give ANYONE ranking a school in texas:

you will get out of med school what you put into it. Rank based on your gut instinct of liking a school, its location and your life.

Chuck all ideas about 'prestige'. Its a useless concept that doesn't translate IN THE LEAST to your board scores or your interviews for residency.

roja--Amen for your post! It's good to hear from someone with a little maturity and perspective on things!

UTKB--I totally know how that feels, and no, I wouldn't want to see anyone after having a fight with my bf. We missed seein' you though =)

USCTex--You're totally on target. I'm sick of talking to medical students because they always try to argue that THEIR school is the best! A few years ago, I was volunteering in Austin, and there were two third years there: one from UTMB, and one from UTHSCSA. They got into this huge brawling match about which school was "better." I felt bad for asking for any advice at all, since the conversation turned into a competition. That being said, we're gonna be okay guys, as long as we match....

Anyone know what time we have to have our final rankings in by on January 15?

Just do it on the 14th. What's the point is leaving it to the last minute?

Take that back, roja... they are all GREAT schools! Hmph, having memory failure after all that time in NYC? 🙂

whatever. you get the point. What do expect from someone with a GED??? 😉

A note about UTSW--I went into the interview thinking, "Okay, this school is probably not all that it's hyped up to be. I don't think I'd really want to go to school here, so I'm just gonna relax during my interviews."
[...]
Anyway, this is my rant for the day. I should be finalizing my decision any day now....

Hey chicka, check your PM. Sorry for the confusion, I wasn't dissing the schools in the least, I was trying to jump start your thoughts through unfair questions. 🙂 Okay, it was sorta reverse psychology... like "what's the most un-laudable reasons you like these schools, and will that influence your decisions?" Hey, it helped me. 🙂

But it sounds like you're doing some heavy thinking - bravo & good luck!

I think that I can finally commit to a match list without the threat of changing it right after I post it. This is a big step for me, I'm quite proud of myself. I'm taking a picture of this post as we speak in order to make a t-shirt out of it.

1) UT-H
2) UTSW
3) UTHSCSA
4) UTMB
5) TAMU
6) Tech
7) UT-H MPH
8) A very dark, cold, dreary, and relatively unhappy little place

On another note, I talked to a fourth-year at UTMB last night and asked her if living in Galveston was "that bad." How's everyone doing this morning? I thought I'd point out how awesome Texas football is. 😎

BCS Standings

1 USC
2 Oklahoma
3 Auburn
4 Texas
5 California <<-------
6 Utah
7 Georgia
8 Virginia Tech
9 Boise State
10 Louisville

Yup. have a couple of cds. 🙂

OK this may sound like a really dumb question, but I am wondering if anyone has any idea about which UT is the best for peds. I am really interested in the field and although it won't be the primary decision maker for me, I would like to go somewhere that offers excellent opportunities in peds. I am still deciding between UTMB, UTSW and UT-H. Any input would be GREATLY appreciated.

Yeah, reeeeeal funny Evo... Don't force me to recommend new locales for your folks' cute little shadow puppet finger gestures. And how the hell does one "gig" something? That's what I thunk. One last thing, our mascot can kick your mascots ass!!! Bears eat cattle, especially ones with adorable little horns, they make for great toothpicks. and and and, our marching band... nevermind. We'll get you next year, just you wait.

AJ

PS- Do you guys have an extra qb? We kinda lost ours and can't seem to find him anywhere

:meanie:

I have no idea how one would "gig" something. Maybe runner1979 knows? He is an Aggie, after all.

I don't know about Bevo vs. (your cute little bear), but I do know that Bevo would stomp the Aggie mascot Reveille. :horns:

--------------------------------------------

Okay, I received the email from TMDSAS today saying "Don't forget to rank your schools!" Like I would forget that. 🙄

AaaaaAAAnnnnnd, I've finally decided to roll the die on UTSA. Here's hoping that I end up back in my spiritual home, the Texas Hill Country. :horns:

The "gig" is a very complicated maneuver requiring one's full concentration. Done properly, one would extend the arm and hand, make a fist, than raise the thumb. This is usually combined with one quick jerk of the arm up-and-to-the-right [i.e. in the direction of Evo, were he sitting next to me] and paired with a "what a loser this guy is" expression. Let me depict it pictorally (facing):

:scared: 👍 :meanie:

The beauty of the "gig" is that once its complete and Evo flashes the hook 'em horns your way, one merely has to move their arm repetitively back and forth (hinging only at the elbow) in the universal "who cares" signal.

That pretty much covers the gig.

As for Revelie, Bevo probably isn't nimble enough to stomp on an epileptic border collie flopping around on the ground. The perfect defense mechanism if you ask me. :rolleyes

Stitch originally posted these FAFSA codes:

UTSW: 010019
UTMB: 013976
UT-H: 013956
UTSA: 003659
TTech: 016024
TAMU: 003632

Then SFAJess corrected the A&M one:

SFAJess said:
Hey guys! Make sure y'all enter the TAMU College of Medicine and not the regular TAMU which is the code above. The correct one to use is 004948. 🙂

I am currently filling out my FAFSA and wanted to correct it again!

The federal school code for A&M HSC is: E00998

(Its on the cover of the FAFSA brochure that they gave us. I also called their financial aid department and doubled checked that I had the right code)

Maybe I'm wrong too?? :scared: Somebody confirm!

-tx

EDIT:

The 004948 is the code for the Baylor College of Dentistry - Which is under the Texas A&M Health Science center as well. THe E00998 is the correct code for the A&M College of Medicine in College Station, even though it says "Dallas" as the city when you do the FAFSA code search. Sorry for the confusion!

Runner,
I've got a mental image of a "gig"... and I've got to say that it sounds remarkably like the dance Elaine did in Seinfeld. I think it was graphically described as "a whole-body dry heave". Let me know if I'm off base or if this is a correct visual image to have.

it seems from about what I can tell:

SA MS1 > HOU MS1

HOU MS2 > SA MS2

so its probably about even 😉

On another note...could those BCS rankings be any sweeter?? Cal gets trounced by Texas and USC finishes #1...well it could be better if USC and Texas finished #1 and #2

Has anyone's last master file update date changed? Mine just changed to 01/10/05. I forgot what this means, I know we discussed it a while back. This process is driving me crazy 🙁

Yeah, there is a LOT of student housing around UTMB, and the area's safer than you might think.

As for "distractions" in Galveston, there are plenty. People actually go to the beaches (you wouldn't think that by looking at the water;-P), or Clearlake/ Kimah/ South Padre...and of course, as with any medical school, they "work hard, play hard."

I guess a true test of whether your 4th year friend likes Galveston or not: did she apply there for residency? 😉

That's the last time your file was used for any purpose. Looks like there's some activity at TMDSAS. I got validated today.

Mine was updated today as a result of my latest (and last!) transcript being received.

Where's that countdown clock???? 😉

My last master file update has been changing about once a week....I graduated in 2003 so all my transcripts have been in....so who really knows what it means...maybe it means med schools are looking at your file...ot maybe tmdsas does routine updates

For all the Austin folk on this thread, i've been discussing setting up a pre-match get together, along with a BCM get together, here in austin on the night of the match. We can meet downtown or at a 'trudy's type' restaraunt, doesn't matter. Then around 1130 head back to check where we matched.
Who'd be interested?

So I am thinking about withdrawing my applications from UT HOuston and UT San Antonio cuz i didnt get an interview from them

and i am gonna strictly say that "do not send me a rejection letter as i have decided through careful consideration that I am rejecting your institution..."

Before I do this, there wont be any adverse reactions from other institutions will there?? Just to be on the safe side, I'm gonna wait until after Jan. 15

Anybody's guess what it means! 😳

if, for whatever reason, you don't get in anywhere this year you will have successfully shot yourself in the foot for next year's application cycle 🙂

I was updated on 1/7/05, but I still haven't been validated, and I've sent in all of my transcripts. I'm gonna call TMDSAS AGAIN tomorrow to see what's up. I feel the need to be validated, especially since I graduated a year ago! Can February 1 PLEASE arrive any sooner???
