I was updated on 1/7/05, but I still haven't been validated, and I've sent in all of my transcripts. I'm gonna call TMDSAS AGAIN tomorrow to see what's up. I feel the need to be validated, especially since I graduated a year ago! Can February 1 PLEASE arrive any sooner???

Only 19 days left!

Heheh. I think we ALL feel the need to be validated. 😛 😉

For all the Austin folk on this thread, i've been discussing setting up a pre-match get together, along with a BCM get together, here in austin on the night of the match. We can meet downtown or at a 'trudy's type' restaraunt, doesn't matter. Then around 1130 head back to check where we matched.
Who'd be interested?

I might be down, what day of the week does this fall on?

I think all you have to do is click the save button. When I go back to look at them, they are exactly as I entered them earlier.

Is it just me, or is this waiting getting more painful as the end approaches?

Yes! Ever since I finalized my list, waiting has gotten harder each day.

Has anyone's last master file update date changed? Mine just changed to 01/10/05. I forgot what this means, I know we discussed it a while back. This process is driving me crazy 🙁

Mine says the same thing.

I think that I can finally commit to a match list without the threat of changing it right after I post it. This is a big step for me, I'm quite proud of myself. I'm taking a picture of this post as we speak in order to make a t-shirt out of it.

Well, changed the match list yet again, and the t-shirt is now in the trash... what a waste of cotton

Ok...so...this MSIV from UTMB called me just now and asked if I had any last minute questions. Anybody else receive a call? My heart practically jumped to my throat when I heard "UTMB" and then dropped right back down when I realized what it was. 🙄 Anyway, it probably doesn't mean anything since I bet they call ALL their interviewees.

I know that I'm probably being paranoid...but it wouldn't be a last ditch effort to see if I'd fit in to UTMB, would it? That doesn't make sense. This process is driving me nuts! 😳

I just got one from a MSI. Not sure what to think of this. I remember talking to a student associated with the adcom and he said they make some recruiting calls in January. Maybe it's a good sign? 😕 I just saw an unknown ID on my phone and thought it was a sales call. Hopefully it has nothing to do with admissions because it caught me off guard and I didn't have anything original to ask 😱

Finally validated today! Thank goodness!

I haven't gotten a call from UTMB, but after visiting Galveston again today (I interviewed way back in August), I got kind of depressed....it really isn't the best place to live, despite the awesome clinical program that they have there. I guess that some people are not affected much by their environment, but I'm the type of person who is. I'm not even a big party girl or anything like that....I simply like being in a nice environment (I'm coming from Austin, what do you expect???). Anyway, if I do go to UTMB, I'm pretty sure that I'd want to spend my entire third year in Austin (about 30/200 get to go to Austin during third-year) =)

I'm still un-validated 😕 My last update was 1/10/05 though.

Oh, I changed my rank order too 😱

For those that received calls, how did he/she get have your phone number? Were you interviewed by them?

About 3 more weeks!

I'm guessing this 1/10/05 update we all have has something to do w/ the email we received telling us to make our match preferences. I'm also in the unvalidated club btw so whatever that means. Good luck everyone!

Congrats Asiandoc! I know that did wonders for your self-esteem, as you have validation issues 🙂 j/k anyhow, I got the UTMB call as well, I think it was an MS4 (can't remember). I didn't answer so they left a message. I guess I will call back tomorrow, although I don't really have any questions. I guess they call all they interviewees, though maybe some can confirm this.I also recieved a UTSW fiancial aid email, which excited me, even though I know everyone gets that and it doesn't mean anything. Only 3 more weeks to go!.

Wasn't interviewed by a student at UTMB. I'm guessing they got my number from my TMDSAS file.

Maybe I should have showed more enthusiasm about the school...hope they weren't trying to gauge my reaction! 😱

Speaking of UTMB questions, I had a question about UTMB, maybe y'all know the answer?

Does anybody know if UTMB has incorporated Pharmacology into their curricululm? (I have heard UTMB did not include this in the past, and the students had to learn pharm on their own for the USMLE)

Thanks!

-tx

GutsyGal: Don't worry! That was probably a good sign they called--I'm sure you're fine! 👍

Oh, and I am not validated yet. My friend that interviewed at UTMB same day did not recieve a call today, who knows if it means anything.

Hiya Pink:

Thanks for the info. It was nice to meet ya on Saturday.

I'm sure that everyone's getting nervous with the countdown down to <3 weeks, but it's nice to see everyone staying positive. 🙂

Good luck everyone. 👍

Apparently TMDSAS remembered who I was and validated me today. My last file update was early november so its good to know they still know I'm alive. Good luck to everyone finalizing their rankings, I know I'm still oscillating on a regular basis.

Good call!

The phone calls from UTMB are part of the Annual Phone-A-Thon hosted by the Office of Student Support Services and Recruitment.

"Annually, current medical students make phone calls to any of the applicants who have interviewed at UTMB in order to answer answer their questions about the campus, curriculum, or student life in general."

http://www.utmb.edu/somstudentaffairs/student/whatweoffer.html

So fellow applicants, take a deep breath and just relax. =)

(Of course easier said than done. 😛 )

Also, in my snoop around the web I found this old thread from last year that I thought would be helpful for folks still having a hard time ranking (me included):

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=86141&page=1&pp=20

Basically more input from utmb, houston, and san antonio students.

You are awesome, meads, thank you!

Oh yeah, and AsianDoc, bummer on your time in Galveston - it's great that you had the foresight to check the place out again before finalizing your list, tho.

Nice finds!!! 👍

Hey guys....its time for last call!!

Its almost that time to finalize our rankings!! I was hoping some current students at any of the medical schools in Texas could talk about what they really like and do not like about their respective schools! Also, was there anything you wished you had taken into consideration or any "lessons learned" about your ranking?? 😀

-tx

Does anyone else that only applied to Texas schools get nervous seeing the other threads of people still talking about interviews? I've seen some people on there with over 15 interviews and here I am with only 5 under my belt. I'm beginning to wonder if I should've applied out of state for an extra sense of security.

Do NOT underestimate how awesome it is to have lectures videotaped unless you are 10000000000% sure you will always go to class.

It is soooo nice to 'attend' class whever you want, pause and write stuff down you wouldn't have time to if you were in class, rewind if you zone out, or speed up 1.4 or 2x for the really slow talkers! (who wants to go to class for 50 minutes when you can go in 35??) And don't worry, we have a nice new Learning Resource Center full of computers with headphones and study carrals which almost everyone drops through at least once a day to socialize so you still see all your classmates who do go to class.

Did everyone who interviewed at UTSW receive an email about the financial aid? BTW any out-of-staters who interviewed at Texas schools in this forum?

Yes, in the email it is written that it is sent to everyone. I don't feel very special!!! 🙁 😛

Yes, I've thought the same thing. I'm in school at Emory and a lot of my classmates have acceptances now and I feel like I'm the only one without definate plans after graduation.

What is the general opinion of TCOM of Texas SDNers.
Would you go there if you didn't match anywhere else? Would you reapply in order to get into another school? What is your personal opinion of D.O's and thier supposed "stigma"?

Has anybody else who interviewed at UTMB not gotten a phone call yet? As the day of reckoning approaches I am finding any excuse that I can to freak out.

D.O.'s can make great docs. One of the chief anesthesia residents at UTHSCSA is a D.O. and a fantastic doc. Extremely bright. You see D.O.'s all over the place and I would not hesitate to go to TCOM if that was only place I got into. In the end, you will come out the same. You have to go where you are happiest of course. The stigma is waning.

do we need to send updated transcripts to tmdsas reflecting our fall '04 grades?

I'm still not verified on there, which kind of scares me.

let me know!

I haven't been called. One of my interviewers seemed not to like me, and I couldn't gauge a reaction from the other. I wouldn't be surprised if I didn't match there, even thought it's my 2nd choice.

I ranked TCOM second, above San Antonio. It just gives me a better gut feeling. I loved the school, the facilities, the laid-backness, just the general atmosphere. I think even if I go to an allopathic school, I'll want to take OMT lessons from a D.O.

Basically, I think they're freakin sweet, dude. But thats just my opinion. I like doing things a little differently in all aspects of life.

Just received a call from a 5th year UTMB MD/PhD student. Now I'm all confused again, because he kept reinforcing that Galveston is indeed a great place to live and that UTMB's Step 1 scores (which are close to UTSW's) are a result of their excellent (and intense) 6-week prep course. According to this guy, reputation of the school is not nearly as important as Step 1 scores and class rank (i.e., AOA, etc.). He said that most UTMB students match to one of their top three choices for residency. Given all of that, I just want to punch the wall because we only have ONE MORE FULL DAY to make the ranking decision....

i'll be happy to answer any questions anyone has about UTHSCSA - there's a ton of things i like and very few, if any, things i dislike about the school so far.

as far as the match goes, just don't try to trick the system. be honest with yourself about where you'll be happiest over the next 4 years, not just the school with the highest ranking or biggest hospital. no matter what you can't go wrong; just try to go where you have the best feeling.

I just got a call from them an hour ago and I was so excited to hear the school name. They also happen to be my number one choice! I'm starting to get more and more nervous as the days pass. It's like my whole life is moving in slow motion, ugh I can't take this 🙁

Yes, you do need to send updated transcripts to TMDSAS reflecting fall '04 grades, but, no you do not need to before match date.

I was freaking out because my school sent TMDSAS an incomplete transcript, and my applicant profile only showed 1 of my 3 classes for the semester. But when I called UTSA and spoke to a lady from admissions she told me that it would not effect the admissions commitee's decision. She also said that most students did not bother to update with the Fall 04 grades. TMDSAS still needs it, however, to verify that you meet all requirements prior to matriculation.

Asiandoc- I know its hard, but try to just relax. You probably already have a good idea of which school is best for you.

Here is my (probably useless) advice: Close your eyes. Chuck *all* information you know about best schools, etc (its all hogwash outside of tx) and picture yourself in med school. What's the first one you see yourself at? This is usually your first choice.

Don't think about it to much and go with your gut.

Then don't think about it any more.

You guys will all be okay.

🙂

I wouldn't take your interview exerience personal - that seems like a common story for this year, oddly enough. I've gotten the impression from such anecdotes (and from the adcom) that UTMB doesn't put much emphasis on the interview anyways.

And the phone call is not made to favorites - EVERYONE who interviewed is scheduled to get the reminder...I mean "encouragement" call. If you didn't receive one yet, it's probably because the person assigned to call you is taking his or her own sweet time. 🙂

Hi everyone- I'm a California resident (From Los Angeles graduated UC Santa Barbara) and interviewed at UTHSCSA. All of your comments have been very useful. Very few people from here apply to Texas schools so I didn't know very much about them. I really enjoyed my interview and got great feedback from my interviewer. I would love to attend UTHSCSA and just waiting for match although i'm very confused about how out of staters work in to this whole thing. :scared:

No call and no last master file update for me. 🙁 I think I need to stay away from this thread...y'all are gonna stress me out. I was validated though!

I wonder why they haven't called....are they still making phone calls until the 15th? They can't possibly call all 1200 interviewees....they have to be calling a select few.

Wow, congrats on an in-state interview - this is regular MD, right? From what I heard, most out of staters get the MD/ PhD spots, but I think it depends on what school you apply to. Regardless, congrats, cuz you've got to be pretty impressive to get the interview - TX schools take an average of 5-10% of their class from out of state, so you must've impressed them to get in the door.

Everyone, in or out of state (unless you do a special/ dual program), just ranks their preferences and gets their match on February 1st. I've heard of a couple of ppl applying outside of TMDSAS, but I think all the info that you need is on the website you filled out to apply to Texas schools - just be sure to set your preference for UTHSCSA by this Saturday.
