OK, I've been waiting since 9/05/03 to have some classmates. Let me know who you are. I've been in Lubbock for about two months now and have made some MS1 connections. Let me know who you are and feel free to send me questions if you have any.

ummmm hello dude, where is the "official" in this thread title....😉

I'm soooooooo excited bout being matched at a medical school! Period.

Lubbock is fine and as busy as you will be in med school, you will really appreciate the ease of getting around here. People in Lubbock are very nice, but nobody is in a hurry. Going out to eat takes forever (even if you are the only one there). The dirt storms suck, but overall, the weather is great. I suffer from mold allergies when in Austin/Houston, so the dry air here in Lubbock is great.

Housing is cheap and utilities seem to be a little less than Austin, but not much. I used to fill me car up with gas a bit mor than once/wk in Austin. Now I fill it every 3wks. Tech campus is great as is the Medical Center.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Mostly gunners on SDN trying for top 25 schools? Kidding. I'm sure we'll here more over the next few days.

Hey future techies-
I am a student at Tech now (undergrad) and have been here for the past 2.5 years and have to say I love it here. The weather, as thackle said, is great for the most part except for the dust, but you tend to get used to it. Living expenses are not bad at all...I live in a very nice apartment complex (SUH Trails) over on the east side of the main campus and pay 575 for a single room apartment. So, the cost is not too limiting as it might be in the larger cities.
The best part about this city, IMHO, is the quality of people, as you would be hard-pressed to find anyone nicer. I think you will all enjoy Lubbock alot when you do arrive.
Anyone from Houston have any info about the cost of living near the med center, as I will be entering UTH next year as well.
Laters-
Lance

Tech is so much fun..

For u people comin from tha city, there's so much to do.

For example, we have a McDonald's here.

If u want u can come to McDonalds when u want a break from studying and hang out.. maybe even get a value meal.

If we are lucky... somebody from might bring the radio so we can all get together at McDonalds and hear the SuperBowl... so its kinda like goin to the theater.

Peace

Omar

Hello fello classmates. I was hoping someone had started this thread. I am a graduate from UNT and am currenlty living in Garland. I do have some questions for THACKL in regards to buying a home. I am married and have a 2 month old kid, so renting an apartment is hopefully not an option. We would really like to buy a home, though we are not sure if it's going to be possible, economically speaking. Any suggestions for realestate agents? Areas to look for homes, and areas to avoid? So where is everyone from? Has anyone got their letter in the mail yet? It's great to finally be past this hurdle. Congrats to everyone!!

I am heading to Tech as well, found out Saturday and I've already posted this once, but I'm a first year grad student here at Tech. I grew up in a small town about 15 miles from here, so I know all about the weather (read: WINDY!) However, Tech really does seem to be making an effort to be the best in Texas, they have construction projects going on like crazy over there, and all in all I'm very happy with my match. See ya'll in August.

Congrats on your acceptance. Where are you from? From what I can tell there aren't too many of us on this forum. I wish more would post so that we can get to know some of these people before we are waist deep in books. Hope to hear more from you and everyone else for that matter. Once again congrats.

Hey Hey Hey....im sooooo pumped up about meeting you all...ive already met omar..wassup boy (i saw you at the rec the other day..thanks for saying hi! hehe jk)

anyways...for those of you who dont know me yet...im in undergrad at tech and going to med school here in the fall.. ive been in lubbock for 3 years and at first i hated it but now im starting to love it...the people are awsome and as long as u got ur peeps the city doesnt matter! you can have fun with ur friends..there are some bars here and clubs that are ghetto but its all good! im sure we wont be having too much time for all that anyway!
its gonna be hard... but if we all hang tight we'll make it through!

Hey omar..i have a question...is midland one of the places u can be sent for ms3 and 4 as well..i thought it was only elpaso and amarillo and here...but one of my undergrad friends said that midland odessa is one too...let me know.

alright well future buddies...if you guys are in town checkin the place out or anything we should get together. otherwise i guess we will all see each other at orientation!!!! Im sooo exciteddd!!!!

I'm sure a lot of you will have shared the same gush of relief that came over me seeing what has become one of the happiest sentences i've ever read, "school matched: texas tech school of medicine". For some reason people seem to need to explain why they're going to tech. to all of you i say, where's your pride? not only have you made it as far as many others will not, but you have also been admitted into an institution that is committed to educating future bad asses like yourselves, and serving the underserved. rejoice, and hold your head up high.. you've earned it.

By the way, I really want to know how everyone's going to be picking between el paso, amarillo and lubbock. i know lubbock is a little tough to get if you dont have kids and a home to hold you down, so between el paso and amarillo, what are you going to pick, and what are you going to base it on?

Omar, dont know if you'll remember me. i was staying with sameer when i was interviewing. hope all is well.

Hey,

I just got my acceptance letter today. I'm so excited. A little worried about Lubbock and its notorious dust storms!! So, for those of you that are in Lubbock, what's it like? Where do the med students live? hang-out? I'm from Houston, so it might be a bit of a change. Hoping for some inside info!!

Congrats everyone!!

I'm from Houston, but I go to school in Richmond, Virginia. I'm interested in women's health so maybe obgyn. I heard that you as a med student deliver TONS of babies in El Paso because of the proximity to Mexico. Of course, having never been to either Amarillo or El Paso definatly puts a damper on things. Do we have to decide our first year there?

For the price of a medical center apartment in Houston, I can literally buy a house or condo in Lubbock. That definatly says something. Anybody looking for a roomate yet? Also, when do y'all plan on moving out there (for newbies)?

I'm really looking forward to the gym at Tech and the Brand new basic sciences building. I think it is going to be wireless. The tour guide at the interview said that Lubbock just got their first starbucks and they have Barnes and Noble. I'm really looking forward to fooball again since my little school in Virginia was 2 and 7 this year and the stadium was smaller than my high school's.

I'll take PMs from anybody to chat and get excited.

~Abbiequeen 🙂

Hey! I use to go to Hastings High School in Alief. It's still awesome here, I'ma miss it when I leave. It's great lubbock has a B&N and starbucks now, I know i'll be there a lot!!

I don't know how I'm going to find a roomate, I dont know many people up there

Thats cool that u're from alief..i know some peeps in that area. Somebody asked about choosin btw amarillo and elpaso...i think im gonna go with elpaso cuz its a bigger city..ive heard that amarillo is just like lubbock practically...they are both good places though...el paso is especially good for obgyn though cuz of all the deliveries! but its good for other stuff too!

You have to rank them during orientation i think or something like that..but ive heard its not in stone at that point..you can always change it if you want but its hardest to stay in lubbock cuz everyone wants to stay and not have to move but honestly i think its a good change and would be a good experience! Im gonna go with el paso for now....but u never know.

yo what up everyone, congratulations on lubbock

this is place is off the hook; trust me ur social life isnt at risk here, cuz of the texas tech undergrad and all the other professional schools here, there's alot of students, and that makes it a pretty cool atmosphere to study and have fun.

There;'s plenty to do here in terms of going out, and ur new academic building is awesome, its not wireless but there;s ports at every desk in the classroom and labs so u can have internet at the labs or class. The new building is so nice for those of u who havent seen it.

Again, i think u may be a little nervous right now cuz many of u arent from west texas and dont know what to expect. but lubbock has every type of restaurant and places to study where u wont even think about the bares and nobles and starbucks cuz theres alot of other choices here too. So its not a small town by any means, think of it as the First Colony suburb of Houston; thats what it reminds me off.

Im very happy here, and I have made great friends cuz my class is off the hook; i think u guys will have the same expereice too.

umm.. namita sorry i didnt holler u were looking kinda intense at the cardio machine... ill holler at u at abs class hahah

amr, congratulations fool, i knew u'd get in!

oh yeah. amarillo is good for surgery and its easy . el paso is hard and ull learn more. Im going to el paso, i thinks its a better learning expereiince but thats my opinion. Plus I heard el paso's alot of fun.

peace

Omar

Well, it sounds awesome. and im sure with all the work we'll have, we wont have too much partying time anyways!

On a different note, I kind of would like to know how the students live. are there student housing places? or does everyone kind of live in apts? Is it necessary to bring a car?

Things like that. anything is helpful!!

Thanks again

From what I know there isn't any student housing, but renting an apartment is pretty cheap. I dont know about public transport, but I wouldn't count on it if you're thinking about living a ways from campus. maybe a bike will do if you're close enough (a good work out to wake up before class  ). i suspect that if you don't want to worry about a car you'll be able to pedal your way around.

Yeah i think u need a car, there;s no time to ride a bike or use the bus. U need all the time to study, make life easy on urself and get a car.

There are some nice apartments that are like 2 minutes from campus. I live 15 minutes away in a really nice area where all the shopping centers, restaurants are. Its quiet and i usually home school, so it really doesnt matter if u live far or close. Its a 10-15 minute drive during the morning traffic for me so the location of places doesnt matter.

yo amr... im gonna be in austin next week if u are still there. Im staying w/ hamza so holler at me; we can hang out

peace

Omar

I, like, the rest of you am pumped about attending Tech in the fall. Like what everyone else said, housing here is cheap. Seriously cheap, I live right down the road from campus, like three minutes in morning traffic (if you can call it traffic), in a nice house and I pay 350 a month. I do have a roommate, but he's moving to Dallas in a couple of months, so I don't know what I'll do. The rec center is nice and convenient, and I work out there pretty often (even have an intramural b-ball game tonite). I don't know where I want to go third and fourth years, but what Omar has said, I have heard, too. Amarillo, good for surgery, El Paso, busy and lots of different cases. I'm from here, so probably my preference is to stay in Lubbock, but I don't really care. Any other questions about Tech, let me or Omar know, but don't worry Tech is a great school and the people, as others have said, can't be beat. See ya in August.

Sorry for the slow response. I'm only getting to the computer every three to four days. Houses are pretty cheep. Anyone who would ile is welcome to view mine. It was $103k (and paid too much IMO) and I put 10% down. P&I is $506 and total payment is about $750. The neighbothood and schools are tops. In lubbock, it pays to buy and per sq-ft, it is much cheaper than renting. For a realtor, absolutly go with Tony Lloyd at ReMax. He is the best (very patient, very honest and very nice).

Two Dr's in Austin told me the same thing.

Madkour, I totally am feelin ya on the RELIEF i felt having matched. Getting into med school's pretty much the biggest honor a person can get and I'm def happy bout getting into Tech.

I'm from Houston, went to Elsik HS (AgentBristow, we were neighbors!) and right now I'm at UT Austin.

As far as what location I'm leaning twds for 3/4 yrs, I'm all for El Paso. My interview was actually over there (still have NEVER been to Lubbock) and the people were so friendly and down to earth. They stressed how much hands on stuff there is and how much respect and authority the med students are given.

I matched Tech as well. Congrats to everyone who matched. Any more info about the school or the town from med students or people who live there would be much appreciated.

Congratulations on getting into Tech!

It's a good school and you'll learn a lot of things from some good teachers. There are efforts underway to revamp the curriculum; so it may be that you'll have more of a balanced basic science curriculum (right now the 2nd semester of 2nd year is overloaded, IMO). I'll be going to El Paso and really look forward to experiences in emergency medicine and infectious diseases (you will have to decide this spring where you want to go for 3/4th yrs, and I heard they are cutting back the number of people they send to EP and may/will make Midland available instead, because of the new medical school EP will have in a few yrs).

Savor this victory--you're going to be doctors!

Hi everyone,

I was also matched with Texas Tech and can't wait to join you guys. Have all of you received your letters of acceptance, because I still have not received mine so I'm a bit worried. It is supposedly not "official" until you receive the letter. Well, I hope I get it in the next few days, congrats to everyone!

Shivmeh, if I were you I would contact the school and let them know that you matched to Tech but have not received your letter yet. Those letters have to be in by the 16th of Feb., I believe or else you lose your spot. I would call them today. Congrats though!

yea, i'd def call them. my letter was postmarked the 30th so i'm pretty sure you shoulda gotten yours by now.

i just sent mine in today.

congratulations!

i think i'm leaning towards el paso. at the very least i'll put that down now and do some more research (maybe visit) later. if i'm not happy with it i've heard its not impossible to get your location changed. if i want to change it badly enough i'll just keep trying. i'm been to el paso before, but i can barely remember it, and dont know what it would be like to live there.
my only worry is that i'm always mistaken for being hispanic, and people come up to me and start speaking in spanish quite frequently. i'm not hispanic and i dont speak a word of spanish, so when i start replying in english i get these very dirty looks of "what? you've forgotten your roots? are you not proud of where you came from?" kind of thing. its no fun, but i've found ways around it. i think i'll also like the idea of picking up some spanish, i'm big on languages

Hey madkour...i feel you on that one...i have the same problem man..it sucks! u indian by the way? yea the only prob i see with el paso is that ive heard you really need to learn spanish cuz 99%of your patients are hispanic and dont speak english that well and usually there is no translator...so im a bit worried about that...i dont know what im gonna do yet...im not interested in obgyn and el paso is basically delivering babies!

anyone know if Ashton Pointe Apt. is a good choice to live in for 1st year atleast?

I wouldn't worry bout not knowing spanish if you end up in el paso. that's a question that was asked a lot at my interview in el paso and everyone said the same thing: you'll pick up what you need to know. most med students that go to el paso don't know spanish and they're fine. of course, it's always helpful if you do, but i wouldn't sweat it. another thing to consider is, if you plan on practicing in texas, spanish is a language that would be really beneficial to pick up

El Paso is very appealing. Not only do you get to deliver more than your fare share of babies but I am sure there are a lot of other medical procedures taking place there. El Paso is no small rural community. I do speak spanish but probably will end up staying in Lubbock. I plan on buying a house, if I can afford it, to make life a little easier for my wife and kid and my wife will hopefully have a good job to help flip the bill of school. Yea, I might be older than most of you guys, but I still look like a young kid and definitely act like it. Atleast that's what other people tell me. No one wants to go to Amarillo?

could you guys recommend some apartments with a decent price range? would it be too expensive to live on your own?

I can't recommend any apts but, at our interviews they handed out an apt. guide booklet. It has a lot of places in it most with prices and descriptions of what they have to offer. You might also do a search on the internet ie. apartment locator dot com to see what you can find. Remeber though, apt complexes always have specials going on so you will most generally get the best deal in person. If I were you I would make a trip out there w/in the next month or two and spend the whole day checking out apts. Some of the better places might have a waitlist, esp. since Lubbock is mainly a college town. Narrow your choices down, and get on the waitlist if there is one. You might look into renting a home as well if you have some friends that might want to do this. I don't know if this helps at all but I hope so.

I haven't ruled out amarillo yet, but i have no idea what to expect there. i doubt all we'd do is deliver babies at el paso, but if there is truth to that i think i'd rather go to amarillo. I am under the impression though that you get to see a lot at el paso.
namita, no i'm not indian, but i'm the next best thing. i'm arab and i grew up in saudi arabia (i'm not saudi though). actually, some volunteering i did at a hospital there is what has me excited about el paso. the kinds of cases i saw there i'm probably not going to see anywhere else. its not that saudi has a poor healthcare system (they have some incredible hospitals), but there are still some very rural areas where people aren't as educated.

Any 3rd or 4th years at Tech--do you have any insight in plusses/minuses of the three different locations? Also, where can I find the Res. Match list for Tech last yr? I can't find it on the website.

I'm pretty sure the residency match list from last year is in the folder we got during interviews. I'm not sure where it is on the website though.

I've got some pretty basic questions. How long are first years usually in class for? Like, do classes run throughout the day? Is it an 8-12 deal?

Is there a scribe system? Is it free or do you need a membership?

Also, is there a Starbucks in Lubbock? That should probably be the least of my worries, but someone told me there wasn't and I couldn't tell if they were kidding and it trips me out that there may not be one.

Hello all,

I remember some answers to That Girl Farah's answers from my tour:

How long are first years usually in class for?
*This is actually why I didn't rank Tech first--we are in class ALL DAY. From the calendar that was in our packets, we generally have class from 8-11 and then lab from 1-5. On days we have Foundations of practial medicine, I think it's only from 1-3.

Is there a scribe system?
*I think there is a scribe system and it's very cheap.

Also, is there a Starbucks in Lubbock?
*Yes! They just got their first. They also have a Barnes and Noble.

~Abbiequeen 🙂

There's a scribe service, and it's a lifeline for many, I might add. You do have to join. The cost of joining: you must scribe a certain number of lectures a semseter (usually 2-3 1 hr lectures per semester).

There's a lot of classroom time at Tech, but after you've been here for a little while you'll develop your own learning method (attending all classes, attending none[called home-schooling], or attending some/few). I agree with the previous poster, there's way too much classroom time.

There IS a Starbucks, and I do study there at times (on the corner of Quaker and 82nd St). As previously stated, there is a B&N and it has a Starbucks in it (chairs, tables and all). So, while Lubbock is small, it does now and then display small flickers of a metropolis. Hope this helps.

The Starbucks is right down the road form my house🙂

If anyone is intrested, my wife and I will be selling our house in Lubbock after May 15th. It is a newer house built in 1999 in a newer sub-division. Just in case someone is intrested! 😉 Price will be in the mid to lower 90's. It is a 3 bedroom/2 bath/ 2 car garage, approx 1450 sq. ft. and on a double cul-de-sac street.

Email me if your intrested.

thanks

Does anyone know when orientation starts? Is any retreat or something planned sometime before August in order to give the new students a chance to meet one another?

Hey all,

Yes, I finally received my letter and have sent it in. I hope everyone is excited about attending Tech cause I know lots of people who didn't even match. Thanks for the replies to my message.
