Texas Tech Class of 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys....there is an orientation at the beg of August like the 6th or something and it lasts for about 2 weeks...the staff pays for/sponsors dinners, bowling, etc..we get to meet each other and all the other 2nd years...its suppose to be a blast...ive met a few med students up here already and they all seem really nice. I cant wait to meet all of you guys as well!

Hi everyone!

Wow, so there are a few people going to Tech this year! Awesome!

for anyone out that can help me clear this up:
on the Tech site, there's a student catalog that says Tech has 20 residence halls or university housing (that can accommadate about 7300 people for room and board) and medical student are eligible for it, anyone know anything about this?

any recommendations on apts in lubbock? (preferbly furnished)

I'm thinking of taking a trip up there in early March, hopefully that's not too late to lease!

Thanks!

Oh...and yay for starbucks and B&N

There's a weekend-long event for incoming students every spring (around April, I think). You'll meet current students and faculty, play golf, attend parties....and hunt for apartments. It's called Spring Training, and I recommend all of you to attend (Student Affairs will send information to you). If you stay until Monday after the event, you can sit in on some MSI or MSII classes in the brand new building where we now have our classes/labs/conferences.

Count me in as well. I am assuming this is over a weekend, right? Do they offer places for us to stay, i.e. with students or something? I would love to play golf as long as I am paired up with another hacker. Any takers?

SHIVANG,

Are you in any alternate pools yet??????? Let me know which ones.

~Jason 👍 :meanie:

Thanks for the info, Castaway. That sounds really cool. I'll definetely be there if its on a weekend.

Hey guys...whats goin on? everybody too busy to say hi on here now or what?? hehe jk....anyways...so who all is planning to come up here for spring training in April? im def. in 👍

Hey Everyone,

I'll be one of your classmates too next Fall. I'm really excited to meet everyone and I'm going to try to come to the training thing in April. It's my first time posting here too! 😀 See ya guys later!

Hey priya....girl im so excited u are going here....its been like 5 years since ive seen you...thats insane!! well if u need a place to stay when u come up here u can crash with me..just let me know if and when ur plannin on comin up here...im soo pumped!

hahHAhaa PRIYA! It's me...Farah. It trips me out that you're on this board....

Hey Priya,

We all know you are on this board only because of me! Anyways, are there furnished apartments in lubbock I don't want to haul all that crap over there.

Hey shivmeh....there are a few furnished apts here but they are really loud and major "college" apts in every sense of the word....i stayed in one and its crazy how much partying actually takes place...they trash the whole common grounds area like the lawns and are really loud but other than that the actual apt is nice! The names of the furnished apts are: Jefferson Commons, Raiders Pass and Sterling University Trails(brand new)....u can look into them...they are pretty nice places to live if u dont mind all the undergrad partying! Hope this helps 🙂

Hey Namita,

So where do the med. school students live? I mean I don't want that noisy of an apartment building. Also, if other students live around my place i can bug them and ask them for help. Thanks for the help.

Just wondering if anyone is going into the MD/MBA program? I was accepted into that and am curious about what to expect...besides no sleep 😴

I'm pretty pumped about it anyway....

SHivmeh,

Yea those apts are not the best living quarters...med students kinda live all over the place but i know a few that live in The Savoy, Ashton Pointe (where ill be living), Heritage...these are all pretty close to campus. But alot of other med people live in ones that are kinda far(although nothin is really far!) I dont think there is any one place that a majority of them live at...it just depends on what your requirements are (price, location, etc) and I think its pretty good housing here relatively speaking! Are u coming up for spring training? u should really try to cuz i know some of them have waiting lists and stuff. i dont know if you have already checked out www.lubbockapartments.com but its pretty helpful.

Bump

So, I know we are supposed to be getting a letter in March in regards to this weekend party thing in April however I was hoping that someone (i.e. current students) might already know what date it will be. I am trying to get in all the play time possible before being on lockdown :hardy: but don't want to end up with scheduling conflicts. Can anyone shed some more light on this?

Different topic, for those of us that have only heard about how the wind blows out west and these so called "dust storms" here is a link below. No this is not a picture from the movie "The Mummy", it's just the ever so prevalent west texas sandstorm.

WELCOME TO LUBBOCK.

Hi all,

I too could definatly use advance warning because I have to figure out how to fly in from Virginia without spending $500+ on an airline ticket.

Hey Abbiequeen, I thought you said you were waitlisted at SA or somewhere else. You sig. says deciding b/w Tech and Drexel. Are you throwing in the towel on your waitlist spots or assuming the worse and hoping for the best? Where is Drexel anyways? Is being a resident of TX (assuming you are) detering you from choosing Drexel over Tech due to tuition costs? Best of luck to you. Hopefully we'll see you at Tech.

Hi,

I matched to Tech but for family reasons wished to go to San Antonio, where I am wait listed. If I end up not getting into San Antonio, I'll be thrilled and excited for Lubbock.

I have also been accepted to Drexel, which used to be MCP Hahneman, in Philadelphia. Being private, the cost is WAAAAAAAAAY more than any Texas school (yes, I am a Texas resident), so that will probably deter my going there. I really liked the program there though. So......when all the financial aid stuff goes through, I'll make my final decision.

But, as I AM posting on the "Texas Tech Class of 2008," I must add that I will most likely end up at Tech and thus express my excitements for attending one of the most supportive and friendly schools I interviewd at. Looking forward to it!

~Abbiequeen 🙂

I got into Tech and Drexel also (except it was called MCP then).

It was tough choosing between them only because MCP had a very interesting student body and amazing curriculum. Cost played a major role in my coming to Tech. I am happy here and really look forward to 3rd year in El Paso.

Good luck deciding. Both are good schools with very different things to offer. It's a good dilemma to be in!!

Hey guys, I was just wondering if any of you have heard anything from Tech since sending in your letter of intent. Also, have any of you finished filling out your FAFSA? I just started working on mine, and I haven't done one in a while, and yes it still is a pain in the butt.

About the whole apartment scene here in Lubbock, I live here and most of the "cool" places to live close to campus are full of undergrad students, which is cool on those rare nights when studying isn't necessary, but bad on most other nights. Lubbock is a college town, and any night of the week, parties are happening. As I've said before, I have a house right down the road from school, and that is definitely the way to go. Houses are cheap to rent, or even buy here, which I did, and much more quiet. I would check the website namita84 listed and maybe live a little further from school for more peace and quiet. Just my .02. See ya in April.

yo there is a company here called Digital Moving

u can call them up, and tell them exactly what kind of apartment u want...

the cost, the type of neighborhood, nice, ghetto, med students, blah blah blah

and they will give u like 5 choices based on what u tell them. Its free, and they hooked me up w the Enclave.

I like it at these apartments, right by everything (starbucks, mall, restuarants, grocery stores, blockbuster, hollywood, etc...)

Its like 10-15 minutes for campus. I like it here. Plus u can leave all ur stuff in the summer and pay half the rent,
if anyone interested, holler at me for more details. I can give u their number.

Other good places, Ashton Pointe, Savoy, Heritage, Wyndham

peace

Omar

are any of those places furnished? if not, anyone know of any nice, quiet, unfurnished places? i REALLY don't wanna hafta buy furniture.

i found the number for digital moving: 806-797-2937

As for furnished apts....all the furnished ones in lubbock (that i know of) are undergrad apts and are very loud and dirty....i wouldnt want to live there...i was looking for a furnished one as well but i dont think its gona happen...u might wana ask that agency though just to make sure. Im sure you can find cheap/good furniture as well cuz alot people are selling their stuff around may cuz they dont wana haul it out of town.

Hey i found out about another furnished apartment called Branchwater...its really cheap and good location and fully furnished but i dont know bout the apartment itself..ive heard its kinda old but its not an obnoxiously loud place. two bedroom fully furnished 1 1/2 bath (i think it may be 2) only 660 a month...plus water and electricity. its the only furnished apt that isnt just a party place...i would go with this over any of the other ones in terms of peace and quiet..but the other furnished places are alot newer and nicer apts. hope this helps.

If you can qualify, buy a house. In Lubbock, cost to rent is much higher than cost to own. Two med students can share a really nice house in a great southwest hood for less than $500/each. Seriously, i know lots of people paying more for rat holes than I pay for my house. Just something to consider.........

Does anyone know when our first day of school/orientation is?

I dont know the exact date but when i asked them they said orientation starts the frist week of august so around the 6th and classes start around the 17th. Those were the dates for last year.

Hey guys,

I talked to the dean last week when he came here for our health professions fair...he said orientation starts Aug. 5 and classes start Aug. 16.

He didn't know the exact date of the spring training thing in April though.

Thanks Priya25 for getting that info for us. My boss has been hounding me about when I am taking off for school. I am headed to Lubbock this weekend to look for a house. If I have time I'll try and swing by admissions to see if I can findout anymore details on this spring fling thing in April.

Hey all,
Just stumbled across this website and was glad to see some Tech presence in the forum. Assuming my waitlists don't come through (and I suspect that they won't) I'll be seeing you all soon. Excited to finally be starting med school, a little less excited about Lubbock - but some of the comments from you guys already there are making me feel a bit better.

josh

I felt the same way at first...but being from a larger city (Houston) I think the "smaller" town will prove to be less of a distraction...I'm not particularly interested in partying with undergrads. It is obviously a great school and everyone I met on my interview and visits seemed easy going (for a med student that is).

Can anyone recommend a good realtor? I am interested in buying as well.

bogumil, before I recommend the guy I am using let me see what he can do. I am going out this Friday and will be back on Sunday. I'll post on Monday and let you know how it went. I would hate to recommend someone that didn't do a good job. He was recommended to me so we'll see how it turns out.

Also, a little FYI for you guys filing for FAFSA. Make sure you complete the institutional application as well, in order to speed up the process. Here is the link:

Later,

Hi all,

This question might be directed at those who are already in Lubbock or have some knowlege of the Tech system.

Does anybody know how I can purchase a "School of Medicine" T-shirt? I've seen lots of other schools have them, and I can't find a link to the bookstore online. Does anybody know where I can be directed?

Thanks!

~Abbiequeen 🙂

The bookstore is here:

http://ttuhsc.bkstore.com

But the merchandise section is being updated so it isn't available. Guess you'll just have to make your own with glitter & puffy paint in the meantime as I did.

Hey ringworm,

Yeah I noticed the institutional form too. I had no idea about it until a few days ago. I was wondering why I hadn't received anything from the school about financial aid. They should inform the students about the form. Aight anyways only a 5 more months to go.

Has anyone found out the details or knows who to contact to find out the details of the Weekend event in April? I need to make sure I have that weekend off from work.

I'm still trying to find out. I called last week, and the office of Admissison didn't have any idea what it was about, so they transfered me to Office of STudent Affairs. They sent me to someone's voicemail who has of yet not called me back. It seems that it may not be a big organized thing if nobody knows what is going on. How frustrating!

~Abbiequeen

Just spoke with the student affairs office and they told me that everyone would be receiving the information (via snail mail) next week.

Here are the dates: April 16 - 18

Friday night @ 7pm reception dinner
Saturday Golf tournament, apartment search presentation
Sunday Student organization brunch

Housing is available upon request and the contact person is:
Ben Harvey at [email protected]

Hope this helps everyone!

Thanks bogumil. I guess golf is the "Physicians Sport". Who here is going to play in the golf tournament?

Not sure if today's climate (ie Healthcare politics/policies) leave the average physician enough time for golf. Maybe radiologists...

I'll bring my sticks...

I'll bring mine as well but will more than likely spend more time looking for my ball than actually hitting it due to a horrible slice I have recently developed. I love the game just never played it consistently enough to be good at it. I hope they take our handicap into account. If you want to win then you'll want to play against me, I guarantee it. See yall on the 16th.

Thanks a lot! I'll get in touch with him.

Does anybody know if it is better to list parental income on the FAFSA for Tech or not? Generally I would say no to show a lower income and make yourself available for more federal money, but some schools require you to show parent data on yor FAFSA if you want any of the need-based scholarships given by the school. What do you think?

I was told to always report your parents income regardless of your situation and that it would only help and not count against you. Not sure of the reasoning behind this though. Sorry I can't be more of a help.
