I was wondering if anyone on here had any insight to my chances for being accepted through this route or if I should even take the chance with my stats. I know I need to call the school and ask them about it and that'll give me the best estimate but sometimes the people on here are just a little more insightful. Anyways, as I currently sit here are my stats:

MCAT: 11P 8V 10B 29O not so great, oh well
GPA: overall and science is roughly ~3.9 if not a little higher
I graduated from Texas Tech this May Summa Cum Laude in Cell & Molec Bio
Recommendation letters are very strong or so they said
Volunteer experience: hospice care for a year (1-2hrs/wk), clinic for 4 months (4hrs/wk), little things here and there
I was a UTA in a bio lab
Molecular bio research on arabidopsis for seven months
I'm currently in a Alternative Teaching Cert program that places teachers in high needs areas and subjects, and should be teaching high school science classes come this august.

Negatives: my PS sucks and I'm not working on it anymore, I need to get my app in ASAP
I didn't do anything health care or volunteer related until the spring semester of my junior year, I think it looks really bad because it looks like I started trying to "build" my resume late in the game, but rather I just wasn't interested in medicine until that time.

Sorry this is so long, but if I do decide to go the early decision route with Tech can I still apply to other schools with the AMCAS app? will they see that or do I need to report it? Just curious to how it works.

I appreciate any help, and I'm seriously not fishing for compliments nor do I even think I'm that great of an applicant so please don't respond with smart ass comments, but I would like to hear if I'm competitive for higher ranking schools such as UTSW or comprable out of state schools

I think for Texas schools you'd be fine (except for UTSW because they are oh so elusive to me 🙂). I'd only apply to Tech early decision if you LOVE TECH and Lubbock and really want to go there. I only know about TMDSAS, and then just my experiences with it. I don't really think you'd be very competitive for UTSW unless you had a LOT of research experience. Our stats are pretty close and I got a very late interview from UTSW and then was put on the last 3rd of the waitlist (about 230 ppl total). I definitely could have done a better interview and probably gotten into the middle, but I just couldn't believe I was actually there. UTSW is SO numbers based, you really need at least a 30 on the mcat. Also, don't underestimate the need for a good PS. You seem to have a good app overall. I'd be happy to read your PS and try to help if you'd like too. Good luck with your application!

Thanks for the feedback, I might take you up on the PS offer, I'm sort of timid about it though because i think it sucks. But yeah, as far as wanting to go to Tech it really is my number one choice as far as texas schools are concerned as some may find it hard to believe. I came from a very small town in the middle of nowhere so I fit right in at Tech. But I am seriously considering the early decision route but am just afraid of not getting accepted and then being thrown into the rest of the pool late.

hey

i go to tech as well, and was thinking about doin this early decision also. are u doin it thru the honors college?

Hey um... I'm pretty sure I could help. I went to TTU undergrad and graduated this May also with C&M. PM me if you have any ?s about your chances. They look like they are pretty good for Texas schools, though.

meerkatmd: no, i never applied to the honors college but I do regret it now, coming to tech from my small ass high school I knew nothing about my oppurtunities. Oh well I guess, but only if i knew then what I know now...

Females: Yea, I actually know who you are, there aren't many from tech that go to Duke so you're sort of a big deal I suppose. Matter of fact I was in densmore's with you and both biochem's the few times you showed up, maybe some other classes too but I can't recall. But my main concern really is if I'm competitive through Tech's Early Decision, my stats are above and the only other positives that I have are my "special circumstances" essay and possibly the fact that I'm a first generation college student. But I don't know, I'm going to call the admissions office today and ask them about it.

Good luck with that call. Hope all goes well for you. :luck: :luck: :luck:

i dont know about the regular early admission to tech, but in the honors early admission if you take the mcat (you can waive it) then you have to make at or above the average. im not sure what the average is, but they may have some requirement with mcat score.

Yeah, i didn't find out about that until the spring semester of my junior year so it was sort of too late by then to apply to the honors college. That really is an awesome program though, i always got jealous when I'd hear someone in class talk about how they didn't have to take the MCAT, they have no idea how lucky they are.

Anyways though, i called Tech the other day and asked about the typical applicant they are looking for as far as early admissions is concerned and the first the she said was "it always helps to be a Tech student" 👍 (me immediatly) then she said that they are looking for people that meet at least the average matriculant stats for GPA and MCAT. She said the average MCAT this year was a 30, 😳, 29 is close enough for me, and the average GPA was 3.7,👍. So I talked to her about my stats and she said I sounded like a good applicant, so long story short, I committed to Tech's early decision last night, application complete, pressing that button was one of the most nerve racking things ever, everything seems so finalized now. Well, now i guess i'll just have to see how it goes, my stats are up to par and Dr. Densmore and Rock told me they wrote very strong letters so here's hoping. :luck:

Good luck! Let us know how it all works out! :luck:
