The financial aid people mentioned something about this at the interview. I just emailed fin aid office to inquire.
 
Another question (working on my to do list): Anyone with children looking for daycare this fall or have any good suggestions?

Good point! No, we don't. I should've asked if anyone had an idea when we actually do all that
 
I believe those forms usually come out in March/April and you should find out location around June. This was what I recall from interview day- if anyone else knows differently please correct me!
 
I wonder if the packet we are supposed to get this week has our location request for 3rd/4th year. Anyone not requesting Lubbock?

It's good to see some other red raiders on the sdn. I'm going for the dpt program starting at the end of may. Still have to look into living situation, but it's pretty exciting. I don't powerlift shan, but I've been known to move some weight around.
 
Anyone else notice that their security deposit check was not cashed yet?

Amarillo versus Odessa. (I hear that only those folks with a "good reason" get to stay in Lubbock)
Does anyone know anything about how the programs might differ between the two campuses? I heard that they reduce your student loans by $15,000 per year if you decide to go to Odessa, which does not bode well. (since if it somehow impacts your chances of a good residency, saving $30k + interest is not a good bargain)

I keep hearing over and over that it has VERY little to do with where you are and everything to do with your scores on the USMLE, your rec letters, etc.

Think about how little undergrad impacts acceptance to Med School.

I haven't heard about the loan reduction... I really think you will get a good education at any of the campuses and that you should go to the one you are most interested. I have heard Amarillo has a really good surgery program (both from the school and a relative who works with the surgery dept. in ama). I am going to Amarillo because I like the location and grew up there...

I don't think you residency chances will change based on where you go- remember you can go abroad or to another school for a few of your 4th year electives (and I have heard that if you go to a school for an elective that you want residency at you can increase your chances)... Personally I plan to do 1 international elective and then hopefully 2 at other hospitals- one will be Ped Hem/Onc in Atlanta through Emory (already have the connections and housing with physicians there)

Good luck picking one!

Oh and I am in Lubbock now and just pre-leased my apartment at Oakridge...it is about 10-12 minutes from campus off the loop right by South Plains Mall- I feel like I got a great deal and it has plenty of room (and a massive closet!)

When I am not tired/busy I will write a review of the complexes I visited if anyone wants to read them

Where did you hear about a tuition reduction? I ask because I didn't know they were offering it to you guys as well. Originally the class before us was suppose to get $30k for the two years but then changed it to 15k for them and also 15k for our class, and that's the total for both years, not 30k total.

Also, there will be chance to change your third year location during your second year. They do another reshuffle for those interested in changing since things do change after two years.

Possibly, there is still confusion with the current second years that are going next year, but I went to the information session that some reps from odessa set up for us and they said that currently they are only able to offer 15k for both years and are "trying" to get the money to increase it.
 
i'm confused (even if it doesn't apply to us)...

how are they able to 'reduce' tuition by 15K/year? isn't the whole tuition only like 11K/year to begin with?

It's easy for an accountant to think like that! (just like how when an organization owes you money, they give you a bill with a negative amount)

Just go 11k - 15k = give 4k back to you. (caveat is that if you are using student aid, like 99% of us, you don't get the 4k as extra spending money...net result is you don't take out 15k in student loans + the loan fees on that 15k + interest)

This school is really offering us a good chance to become rural primary care doctors. We do clinicals in rural locations and this has to be one of the cheapest allopathic medical schools there is. The only cheaper ones I know of are pretty elite and the competition for spots is fierce. And now they're trying to give us even more money 😛. It'll mean that those of us who become plastic surgeons will be even richer...
 
Habeed- what kind of surgery are you wanting to go into? I think Amarillo is best for gen. surgery but Lubbock is key for trauma surgery- remember UMC is Level 1 trauma and Amarillo and Odessa are not. You mentioned that you would love to stay in Lubbock- why not at least list it first and see if for some reason you get lucky? I had contemplated doing that but decided I would rather be close to friends/family in Amarillo.

I have a cousin who works for the med school in Amarillo and so all she has told me is she likes working with the surgery dept and that they feed students the best (of course who knows how biased her opinion is 😉)

If I recall right the number of students in Midland/Odessa is pretty small and they say it results in more personalized attention for people who like that.

Lubbock has the burn center so if you are wanting to do plastics then you have that to consider too- oh and of course the research in Lubbock is better (I will be doing research in Atlanta so I didn't have to consider that)

I would suggest just reading which specialist are listed at the affiliated hospitals on each campus.

Every highly competitive residency, except for radiology, is a variant on surgery. And I'm not remotely interested in radiology. So, even if I changed my mind later, if I want the option of a highly competitive residency, I need to do well on the surgery rotation, and to do some research between M1-M2 year.

If you go to www.ttuhsc.edu then click on patients/healthcare you can see on the right a link for clinics by campus...that will guide you but you can search around the site for more info...lubbock had ENT, Bariatric, and surgical Onc and others listed when I looked for the link a bit ago.. Amarillo just takes you to a general surgery department website and more searching might be needed (I am not interested in surgery so I will let you search on your own 😉 )
 
I have my fingers crossed for Lubbock, o/w my future husband and I will have to live apart for 2 years. 🙁

How did the apartment searching go? Any places you'd recommend stopping by or skipping altogether?
 
Hmm. Yes, Lubbock had a lot more clinics. But, in any case, 4th year electives is when I would do a rotation in the specialty I have in mind anyway. I guess it doesn't really matter what campus, although I have heard the Odessa one has some distinct advantages because there are no residents to compete for attention from the attendings.

One significant difference is demographics. Odessa is 50% hispanics, while Amarillo is 20%. That's relevant because I don't speak spanish, and it is reasonable to assume that if the overall percentage of hispanics is higher, then the percentage of people who only speak spanish would probably be as well.

yeah, i think this is one advantage that we as tech students (at any campus) will have over the students of the more 'shiny' tx schools.

after the givens of good boards, good grades, some sort of humanitarian/student org, and not being a psycho at the interview, it seems like the main determining factor for residency is having done an away rotation at the program of interest.

if so, i'd much rather have more responsibility and be held to higher autonomous expectations with the 'routine' stuff while we're baby 3rd-4th years, than watch a bunch of other people do stuff thats never been done before.

yes the never-done-before stuff is way cool, but i'd rather experience that in residency when i can have a part of it, and come in with a rock solid foundation.

this is one (of many) reasons i chose tech in the first place.

Are you kidding? Odessa/Midland harbours tech residents in Internal Medicine, family medicine/geriatrics, OB/GYN, Nephrology and Pediatrics. I think there are some other specialties i'm forgetting.
 
Got my flight and rental car booked for apr 24 for spring training. They better not change the date! Continental has some pretty cheap flights for those who are interested. I'm going to fly in early and hopefully check out daycares/rental homes. Anyone else on here planning on being there?

Well I ended up renting at Oakridge which is dated but I felt was in a good location and had what I was looking for at a great price...

I will write reviews of each of the apartments I went to (remember these are just my opinions)... I stayed away from all the stuff right by Tech because it is pretty much all undergrad housing and very loud and crime ridden

Summertime Villas- This complex wasn't in the greatest neighborhood but had good floorplans. They didn't have an open apartment available and they are doing a waitlist for summer instead of pre-leasing... It was dated as well.. Rent was 550-600 for 1 bedroom with W/D connections

Bentwood- This complex was right across from Summertime Villas and again as a single female I wasn't big on the neighborhood but in reality I am sure it is fine... The rooms were nice sized and the bathroom had a very big vanity... however this complex did not have W/D connections and the laundry facilities were not very nice so I passed it by- the current special on rent was $500/month for 1 bedroom

St. Francis- nice sized apartments yet again dated... the bedroom and closet were very large. This apartment complex was very close to UMC but the neighborhood had a lot of tiny ruin down homes and my cousin and I agreeed it wasn't for me. Also no W/D connections and the complex is spread out meaning to get to laundry facilities you would have to cross the street. Rent was around $525/month

Bear Creak Lofts- this one was right by St. Francis (same management) and was absolutely adorable but tiny! The whole apartment is open (bedroom maybe big enough for a queen bed and small chest of drawers... I just couldn't see myself being able to spread out and study there but it had the most character of any of the places I visited- and it has W/D connections

Oakridge- I rented here- the kitchen is dated and appliances older. The bathroom vanity is smaller but the bedroom is good and the closet is huge! The medium 1 bedroom has the biggest living room which I loved (the large has a fireplace which takes up a lot of living space)... the apartments have W/D connections too. The complex is on the other side of the loop from the mall and the neighborhood is nice. The complex is mainly young married couples with a few graduate students, law students, med students, etc. The medium 1 bedroom was listed at 555/month online but I got 515/month

Sprinfield- this is the complex everyone raves about. First off- the smallest 1 bedroom is tiny and has had the maximum number of pre-leases. They said they have some of the larger 1 bedrooms available still. These apartments were drop dead gorgeous- brand new kitchens, large closet, big vanity in bathroom... However rent on the large 1 bd is 750/month (this includes the W/D though) and I just didn't want to stretch myself that thin

These are all the ones I looked at...Dominion and The Fountains looked nice too- though I had decided not to look because of price.

I am - cost dependent.

And I guess depending if I get off of work or not. My boss has yet to fill the position that is becoming vacant next month (I were there 3+ months to be trained before my spot was officially "vacant") preventing me from being able to have ANY vacation.

Ideally: he will go job-interview during his spring break (perks of working for the university!) and we will attend spring training together for more interviews and looking around. hopefully first week of may will be house-hunting!! =)

June 12 = my last day at my "wonderful" job.

we'll be doing something similar. I am going solo for spring training to scope out housing, etc. Probably go back in may to finish and hopefully my wife will int for jobs also. Are you thinking of renting or buying?

With the market like this we're really hoping to buy. It'd be kind of crazy not to in our position! 8,000 tax credit, super low rates and great market....we'll see if we have time, though.
 
I'm planning to head up that weekend. debating on flying or driving.

Thanks for the apartment writeups. For how you made them sound, I expected them to be a bit cheaper. I'm only paying a little more for a pretty big gated apt about a mile from UTHSCSA.

I'm still completely undecided whether or not I want to try to find a roommate, live alone, buy/rent, house/apt. A lot of it depends on if I'm going to be in Lubbock 2 years or 4.
Does anyone know when we find out for sure where we'll be 3rd and 4th year?

I still haven't gotten a packet either.
