LOL Aggie

Gobaylor- I didn't think the cost was that bad for apartment but if they are under 650 for a 1 bedroom they tended to be dated... I think this is because of TTU being there and the demand for housing from all the undergrads... I stayed away from some of the undergrad places which looked nice but I have been told they are loud and have more crime since students tend to leave valuables in cars.

Continental has some pretty cheap flights for those who are interested.

Flying there from Houston, right? How much are you paying for your flight? I checked Continental for flying in Friday morning and flying out Sunday evening - $137 roundtrip (~$160 after taxes). Compared to Southwest ($220! after taxes & fees), Continental does win the day, but I wonder if the could go any lower... :xf:

yep, from Houston. It is probably cheaper from houston than elsewhere. Are you planning on going?

Yeah, trying to make plans for that weekend now. I unfortunately still have not received any new packet like most of y'all though...

No, I haven't gotten the packet yet either. There was a message on our facebook page about spring training being the 24th-26th.

someone did post about receiving a packet on the facebook group as well.

- Welcome letter from the dean
- Computer, health insurance, and immunization requirements
- Spring training information
- White coat ceremony information
- Lubbock housing information (and an apartment guide)
- Financing med school
- Miscellaneous information form (white coat size, whether you want a second year mentor, etc.)
- Clinical campus information
- Campus preference form
- Health insurance verification

Sweet, thanks for the heads up.

Teacherman- I saw the info about that as well; I guess I'm more fretting over what time I should be flying in and out, if that should matter much at all.

Looking on the tech co 2012 page, I guess last year they started with a dinner on friday evening around 6 PM. I am flying in early that morning to look at houses/daycares.

ridiculous comeback vs aggy tonight. 👍

I find it weird that I'm half rooting for Tech athletics now. :scared:

Of course I'll probably be the most sports-crazed medical student there.

bears win + aggy loses = good day.

I can compete with you for sport-crazed baylor... though I am a Tech fan (my UG doesn't have football)... I will pretty much watch any sport- basketball is my least favorite though... I really love football, volleyball, baseball, and gymnastics... oh and the 2006 olympics left me with an insane obsession with curling

So, can they do all the antibody detections just from one blood draw or will it take more?

I'm sure they could...but trust me, they'll fill up separate vials with what appears to be a lot of blood...

It will be one draw with probably 2 vials. One to spin out serum and one for whole blood. Titers shouldn't take much blood.

P.S. I have a phobia of injections. True story.

Same. I don't mind giving other people a shot, but the pain of being poked with a needle myself causes a loss of vascular tone and I become pale and have fainted a couple of times.

Yes, I want to be a doctor, and I'm afraid of needles...

Which says wonders about my 'empathy', because the needles don't scare me, I can poke someone else all day and feel fine.

Don't mind giving others shots? Depends on their age. I don't envy the people giving my boy his shots!

I was terrified of needles- I actually kicked my doctor once when he was trying to numb my toe (and I was 13!)

But I have a chronic disease and have blood draws every 3-6 months so I got over it mighty fast- now I tell the nurse which vein to stick lol

I actually have my shot records form sitting on the desk so once my package does arrive then it won't be hard to fill that part out! My doctor was teasing me last fall about how there is literally not a single immunization left for me to get- I have been all over the world over the last few years and am good to go!

Ha...I can relate exactly. I work as a Phlebotomist at the blood center and stick people all day with 16 gauge needles...but when it comes to getting stuck I'm quite the wuss :luck:

haha, same!!! my immunization record reads like cdc most wanted list! (literally!)

Mine is quite the opposite. My mom hated taking me to get shots cuz I acted like such a fool. She got me the bare minimum to make it through high school, lol.

AND she's a nurse. So she knew I probably needed the others....but, nope - I was a terror at the doctor, haha.

I can definitely empathize with our needle-phobic patients, though. I give SO many injections every week, but in 9 months of working for an allergist I've only seen 2 actual phobias. Lots of scared people, though.

W00t. The thick packet finally made it all the way to me. Free scrubs, Woohoo! (sure, it's like $8 for a pair...but I do like the sound of FREE!)

I don't know where you get your scrubs, but they are NOT $8 where I get mine.

And that would be Walmart.

Do share your secret if you're being serious.

for the love of god don't go out and buy scrubs...the bottoms are fine for lab but that's the only time you will ever wear them so don't waste your money

Who was talking about buying scrubs?? We get 2 pairs of free ones from an Alumni, which is what Habeed was talking about, and I was talking about the ones I have now (for work....).

I told you not to buy more scrubs. You should listen to your elders, both you and habeed! 🙂

I've never bought scrubs, but my roomate is an M1 and he said they were about 8 bucks a pair. That sounds about right, as the linked website has free shipping if you buy more than $50 worth, making it $7.98 a pair if you buy 7 pairs.

those scrubs aren't that cute though- I think where I got mine were like $10-15 for each top/bottom... I bought basic bottoms but did a cute top- yes I know they are for nurses but I was working triage for peds and wanted cute tops!

Hey, I didn't say the scrubs looked good...

I was just giving general advice. The scrub party is pretty neat, you get to mingle with your class, eat free food, and drink free alcohol on campus.

Booked my tickets yesterday. I'll see you and whomever else is going there. :woot:

for those of you who have been to one in the past....how many people do you typically invite? just the parents and significant others OR do you also bring along the grandparents, siblings, etc.?

I'm inviting my parents, and an aunt/uncle that live in Texas.

haha, i'm having an open invitation policy coupled with the following mandate: anyone (friends, relatives, etc) who plans on soliciting me for free medical advice at somepoint in the rest of my life must be at either my graduation in four years or white coat ceremony this summer :meanie:

Well as of now I have over 15 people planning on coming to the white coat ceremony- it could be upwards of 25-40 though depending on what peoples schedules look like... that includes grandparents, aunts and uncles, brother, a few cousins, and a couple close friends... it should be noted I grew up in Amarillo though so the drive is short and a lot of people have been waiting on this for years! Basically I invited relatives, a couple close family friends, and thats about it- I just happen to have a lot of family in West Texas 🙂

gawww

I grew up there, too and I thought my 9 or 10 was a lot.

😱

yea well my mom was joking about it last night and basically said i don't need a college graduation party since everyone is coming for the white coat ceremony- we will probably do a dinner afterward with all the guest who knows

I like this idea! However, if I adopted this I would have too many guests. I'll probably have my parents, wife, son and maybe siblings and their families. They will be travelling from iowa, kansas, germany, etc. so it'll be hard to predict how many will come. Probably about 5-10.

thanks for the feedback everyone. i didn't want to be the only one with a bunch of family there. seems like my clan will be about the same size as everyone elses!

WHOOP!!!!! (er... i mean wreck'em!) that's a third of the class goin into highly competitive fields!!!!

Indeed, that's pretty sweet. Especially the "big dog" residencies near the bottom of the list that are allegedly reserved for the geniuses. After all, with all the competition, it takes a genius to pop pimples...
