I've a year before applying to pharmacy school and I'm currently looking into the Texas Tech pharmd/mba program. I have taken all the pharmacy requirements; However, I'm not finding any information about the MBA prerequisites, such as macroeconomics, accounting, finance and so forth. I don't want to waste money if it is not necessary but I also don't want to waste a year not doing anything.

Could someone, possibly who is currently attending the program, tell me if I have to take any business courses before joining the dual program?

Thank you

I applied to pharmd/mba program at Texas Tech for early decision this month.
As far as I know only requirement is a bachelor's degree. With a master's and work experience, you have a better chance, which I have both and was encouraged by one of the advisors to apply after learning of my background.

Just my opinion but you don't sound like someone who would benefit from the combo. If you don't have significant work experience then you are isolating yourself from other candidates and not in a good way. I would NEVER hire someone with an MBA that doesn't have at least 5 years of full time work experience. Besides, an MBA in retail and hospital is useless unless you want to become a district manager or a director of pharmacy.

So is it better to go back to get an MBA after a couple years out of pharm school?

Of course, what's the point of having an MBA or MPH with out the aspiration to became a pharmacy manager, da or even as far as a director. In my opinion, experience is over rated. No one seems to care if you present the right credentials. After all, we're talking about pharmacy not American airlines. I notice, working in a hospital pharmacy, most recent grads with a title such as MBA or MPH move up the career ladder in just a few years of working here, compared to the 15 year in service pharmd.
