LMAO! Jon...when did you interview at UT-H? Was this interviewer an ER doc and did you interview with her in a conference room in the library building? I think I might have had her, too, and she just unnerved me.

Anyway, I think the reason why so many people want to get into UT-H has nothing to do with the school, but everything to do with the TMC. Who wouldn't want a classroom like the TMC? And, unfortunately, it seems UT-H rests almost entirely on that fact to lure applicants/matriculants.

I agree..If it weren't for the TMC, I would have ranked Houston below Texas Tech and A&M because the school itself is not very impressive. The students there were not happy students, constantly comparing themselves to Baylor kids. When I was there, all they do is talk crap about UTSW..and Baylor.. When I was lost and looking for help, nobody would stop and help me out.. I was almost late to my interview...

Oh, just want to add..this is not indicative of the whole class. I'm sure UTH have very awesome students, and maybe my experience there was an isolated incident. TMC is so impressive, that I was willing to overlook all the negatives...so that says alot about TMC. 🙂

This may be a bit off topic. But I was wondering, did you guys know before your interviews which schools would or would not be a good fit for you? How did you figure it out? Did you visit the campuses or did you read stuff on the web? I was just curious.

Plus, as a Texas resident, thanks for the advice of applying out of state. I hadn't planned on it but ya'll are frightening me just a bit. Think I may add a few schools to that list for June.

I don't know about other people, but for me, that's a big fat NO!!! You really have to go and get the feel for it to see if you're a great fit. Just because some of the intangibles cannot be conveyed in words or on a website. Definitely visit the schools 🙂 All my opinions changed after I interviewed at all the school...

Thanks for the response. It has been stressing me a bit people talking about adcoms trying to figure out if you're a good fit for the school. And I was thinking, "How will I know if I'm a good fit for that school. I don't want to be miserable, well, more miserable than absolutely necessary."

I think that Texas is becoming more and more like California where the asian candidate must do much more to make himself or herself standout. (i.e. close to the 4.0/40 ideal and then one heck of a list of EC's or research) I can see Texas getting to California's level in about 10 years max.

Could not agree with you more!!

i am gonna join the waitlist crew. anyone know how TCOM handles their waitlist?

I'm on their wait list. Through communication with their admissions, I believe they keep separate wait list for the out of state (I'm one of them) and residents. They didn't provide me with any more information regarding the wait list though.

anyone get a general letter from the UTHSCSA (not dental or medical, but general) saying, and i quote, "in the event that ou are accepted as a student, you need to begin the hepatitis b immunization series immediately..." blah blah. is this a letter foretelling a future acceptance letter or am i reading too much into this. i got it today 2/4/06. from austin, interviewed 2nd week in september, no 1st round or 2nd round acceptance yet. let's keep hoping!

I knew the general feel of each school before I visited, partly from what med school representatives told us at undergrad presentations and mostly from what I heard from students themselves on the web. For example, coming in I thought UT-SW must've been intense and that the other schools (UTMB, UTHSCSA, A&M) were the "nice" schools. For the most part those impressions were true from interview day, except UTSW was not malignant as people made it out to be..

Definitely apply to schools out of state if you can, but talk to your advisor if you have one.

BaylorGuy, anyone... any news on the UT Southwestern waitlist?

I called them up...i think i spoke to Karen Davis. Even though they said it they said last week that they would have it today, they SUPRISE!!! didn't have it.

They said they were hopefully going to have it done by the end of this week (i'm smelling next week) and they said that they would send an email along with it which would tell applicants which quartile they were in (25, 50, 75, 100). I;m not sure.

I think just for the hell of it i'm going to call them everyday this week to bug the hell out of them. 😀 😀

Thanks Baylorguy for letting us know. I didn't have the guts to call. I can't handle too many rejections close together... I need to spread them out.... 😛

argh that must be frustrating. I remember hearing that last year, people from the 2nd quadrant of the waitlist were getting in, so hopefully there's a chance for you guys.

Yeah, i'm hoping for a lot of movement (once i found out where i'm at on the list). But i'm also still waiting for good news from Baylor. I have a feeling i may not hear from either school until April/May....which kind of stinks in a way.

Was she a south asian, pedatric ER doc? If so, I also had her. 'Twas my first interview and it was hard to adjust to the cadence of her speech at first. Not the best interviewer, but I had one bad apple bad apple at SW (a really mousy woman) and SA (stress interview with a former army doc), too.

I'm sorry about your situation, usernameneeded. I'm trying to have faith that karma will override the stupidity of this process and we'll all end up at the proper schools.

I just received an email from UTSW...it turns out the waitlist is apparently out and available. Good luck everyone!

I also got a UTSW email about the waitlist. It looks like it's not ranked this year. It says in the attachment, "we will generally not indicate to applicants any type of “ranking” within the alternate pool." I thought they told us where we stood on the list. I'll probably call them later this week bout that.

Just got the UTSW email myself, it doesn't sound promisiong...actually, i'm pretty sure they aren't considering me anymore. Again, i'm not suprised, my interview was kind of crappy and i totally knew. Here it is

"The Admissions Committee at UT Southwestern takes the work of evaluating applications
very seriously and realizes that the interest in studying medicine is great with
most of our applicants. Unfortunately, there are more than 10 applications for
every place in the entering class, requiring that many excellent applicants who
have a strong desire to be doctors receive a negative answer. Regrettably, this
is the case with your application.

The effort you made to come visit with us and your interest in UT Southwestern
are appreciated. We are sorry that we cannot consider your application further.
Thank you for applying and best wishes for the future."

Sincerely,

J. Scott Wright, Ed.D.
Director of Admissions

Oh well, their loss....i'll get em next time.

I got a different letter in my email. The first sentence sounds the same..then it goes on explaining how we have to wait until May to expect any movement on the waitlist...and that the alternate list is not ranked...which was strange because I thought it was...

I'm not sure if that means I'm on the waitlist. Anyways, my interview was horrific.... I'm still replaying that dreadful experience in my head...I'm not surprised I didn't match here..

That is their lost...UTMB is lucky to have you baylorguy! 🙂

LETS GO BAYLOR, LETS GO!!

Anybody call UTSW to see what is the deal with the alternate list?

So I found out that the school I'm waitlisted for initially accepts more students than they have actual spots for. I guess b/c they know there will be definite movement. I guess that limits your chances even more because it just makes the filter even bigger. Awesome.

Anyone know anything about people getting bumped off the waitlist?

Your undergrad institution did the same thing. Actually, outside of some very competitive Ph.D. programs, my understanding is that schools at all levels do it. Hence the academic prestige of having a high yield (# who enroll / # offered admission).

Don't worry too much: I don't imagine that they still accept enough initially to fill their entire class based on previous yield rates. I've heard of this happening rarely by mistake (according to some posts, UMich had a surfeit of enrollees last year and had to offer incentives for deferment), but it's definitely the exception, not the rule. You're in a filter, but its a common one.

TCOM in fort worth. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll get off of the waitlist, but I have a great back up in West Virginia. Out of state tuition is the only factor making it a "back up."

this may not mean much, but five years ago a friend got off the TCOM waitlist in late April. I remember it was the week of the MCAT's so it must've been then.

Hey I grew up in Fort Worth! If you end up there and you want any advice on where to live or great places to eat, feel free to PM me. I guess that goes for anyone going to TCOM. Fort Worth is a great town in my opinion.

haven't heard of anyone getting called off the waitlist anywhere in Texas that I know.

letters and emails have now gone out, so everyone has at least been notified (as opposed to those neurotic people who think it's cool to call admissions offices) 🙂

has anyone heard from Texas Tech waitlist? I got Houston and UTMB but no word from Tech yet.

if you go to their admissions page, there is a link to check on your admission status. it was posted that after feb. 10, the waitlist would be available.

i didnt apply to any texas schools, but i was just curious

i thought there is no waitlist movement until the deadline (at any school)

i got a letter from uth saying ive been taking off the alternate pool list...and its been only 2 weeks! anyone else get a letter like that?

I'm on Tech's alternate list

Does this mean you're in or out? Did you match somewhere else originally?

When did you get the letter? Had you called previously and been told that you were on the alternate list?

That's the same letter I posted about earlier. If you got it today it means you were never on the waitlist to begin with because initial rejection letters were mailed "2 weeks after the match."

Has anyone heard anything about the San Antonio WL?? 😕

I think EvoDevo said it may not be ready until the end of the month. As she's on the student part of the admissions committee, I recommend you send her a PM.

So what have schools been telling us about when they will start taking people off the WL.

UTSW:
UTH:
UTMB:
UTSA:
TAMU:
Tech:
TCOM:

UTMB: heard that it's a giant pool. A "type" of student leaves and they pull that "type" of student from the waitlist.
TCOM: won't tell you where you rank...office said that most of the movement happens in May. They also initially accept more students than they have spots for, so the filter is big.

That's all I've heard...anybody else know more? Can you tell I'm sick of waiting?

I hate waiting too! In fact, I won't watch the movie Waiting even if it is about waiting tables.

All I know is that the UTH pool is unranked and they only accept updates through TMDSAS. Not really sure what that means.

Here are the TMDSAS STATS so far

It seems as though there were more people who applied. There were more than 3,000 people of whom a little greater than 2,000 were interviewed and of that 1,440 people were accepted to the match.

I am so crossing my fingers and hoping to get of the waitlist, it sucks but at least the people who were waitlisted would appreciate the fact that they are in a med school and would probable even do better. Good luck to everyone!!!

through TMDSAS??? The woman I spoke to said NO UPDATES will be accepted. I wish they'd make up their mind! 😎 Well, if anyone figures out what "through TMDSAS" actually means, please do let us know... 😳

Hey guys,

just wanted to let you all know that UTSA is accepting more students, pre-Waitlist movement, I believe. I just received my acceptance letter from them in the mail. Woohoo!! Good luck to all still waiting.
