I was wondering if you guys are sending out thank you letters to the adcoms who interviewed you. If you are, what would you put in the letter?

Yes, I am send ing out letters. You can thank them for their time and consideration. Maybe add in a sentence restating why that's your first choice. You can also put some afterthoughts about the school and maybe emphasize what you really liked.

i sent a thank you card to my interviewer (who is on the selection team/board). just make sure you get the contact info during your interview! i made sure to get the snail mail address (e-cards are just cheesy and pointless--whoever even opens them up? they're equivalent to spam)

I sent email thank yous, and no one seemed to mind. Much easier, imo.

I sent out snail mail "thank you's". I don't really know, to be honest, if this helps your case or not. But my thoughts are: HEY, it doesn't hurt!

Nah.... You don't have send any thank you letter or card. I didn't and still got in 3 out of 3 interviews. Remeber to say thanks to your interviewers for their time after your interview.

I have been sending out thank you cards to those that interviewed me. I consider it a great privilege to interview at some of the schools and am grateful that professionals are willing to set aside a portion of their day to interview me.

I had never heard of sending thank you notes to the interview staff until after this semester. One of my classmates said he sent thank you notes to the staff and i thought he was just brown nosing, but apparently a large part of our class did as well. I would probably mail the letters to the school address however; i don't know how people feel about giving out home addresses.

Personally, I'm not sending any thank-you cards or letters. I think the adcoms have plenty enough mail to deal with and some ppl might not appreciate receiving them. I know if I were on an adcom I sure as heck wouldn't appreciate it, so maybe it's just another case of doing for them as I'd want ppl do for me.

I think going either way (to send or not to send) is probably pretty much fine and probably pretty much doesn't make a huge difference to them.

I was told by a med school interviewer that "Thank Yous" hardly do much rather than show an ability to brown nose a little...in a good way. Its best to send one to the office in general instead of individual interviewers.

WASTE OF TIME!!! They would probably only get to one of the secretaries which have no say whatsoever in the matter or if by some strange reason they actually get to someone who does have a say, they are too busy to care. If you were in their shoes would you give a spot to someone lower on the list bc they sent a thank-you letter? NO! It just comes down to your stats and if you can get through the interview without looking totally incompetant.

I'm sorry, but if you think the secretaries have no say in your admission, you're poorly informed.

Ok guys here is what it boils down too.
1) A well written thank you letter will NEVER hurt you and it might help
2) If they are down to the last spot and 2 applicants have identical stats and one has a thank you letter but the other does not clearly one will have an advantage
3) What do you have to lose -- if you truly want to put forth your best effort for gaining admission why would you skimp on this last step after all you have been through.

I'm sorry, but if you think you know what you're talking about before you're even in dental school, you're wrong.

If your sole purpose in writing a thank you note is to make a better impression on the person or to get an 'edge' on the other applicants, I don't think its worth your time. It probably won't make a difference. But I would encourage sending one if you really just want to say thank you.

And if you do end up sending one, make sure that its personal enough that they wouldn't have to look up you file to remember you. Maybe you discussed something specifc in the interview that you are following up on in the note. I think an interviewer can often see through an empty form thank you note. Show them that you are sincere.

Any chance that looking like a brown noser might adversely affect you?

I sent 2 email thank you letters both to my interviewer and the director of admissions and they wrote me back the next day thanking me and saying that i should email them whenever questions come up. The director basically said that i'm really glad that you enjoyed your vivist and i thank you for being so patient during the admissions process. So i think sending letters does help. It's a way for them to remember your name.

At my last interview (VCU), I met with two faculty members. One casually mentioned that thank you letters were a bit useless and he didn't really have time to read them anyways. The other one mentioned that sending a thank you letter would definitely be the polite thing to do.

What should I do in this situation? Just send one to the doc who might appreciate it? Send one to the admissions office in general? I actually wanted to thank the dean and the secretary, in addition to the interviewers, as they were all extremely kind to me. Advice, please.

send them anyway (i would)

to be honest if you snail mail the thank you notes, odds are they will have made a decision by the time the notes get to the deans anyway. i doubt a measly thank you note would completely sway a decision.

that being said I still sent them when i applied, it can never hurt. 😳

I honestly don't think the cards will sway the adcom's decision either. I just think it would be the polite thing to do.

I should also mention that EVERYONE gave me a business card with their contact info even though I didn't ask for it, except for the interviewer who said that he doesn't really care about thank you cards. He also is the only faculty member I met that does not have his e-mail address listed in the faculty directory. Should I take this as a sign to leave him alone?

Someone suggested that I include his card along with the secretary's, explaining that I know he didn't want one, but I didn't want to leave him out. He can do what he wishes with it. In a more formal tone, of course. Sound good?

What ever happened to sincerity? Why don't you do what you WANT to do, not what you think you SHOULD do? If you feel like its appropriate, then do it, if not, don't.

What's insincere about that? I thought I made it pretty clear that I did want to send the cards. I just wasn't sure if it was appropriate under the circumstances stated above.

i haven't had any interviews because I'm applying for 2010 but just out of curiosity, does the interviewer usually offer you their info where you could send them the thank you cards or do you have to ask for it?

if i sent out anything it would probably be an email. if i was an interviewer i wouldnt know what to do with 300 thank you cards a year. even with emails if it was me i personally would only send it if i really had a nice conversation with the interviewer and/or i felt that everyone really went out of their way to make the visit pleasant. this way the note is sincere and is not solely because i want to make an impression or them to look more favorably upon me somehow.

ps if i am posting a lot tonight it is cause i have a biochem test i am trying to study for and it is boooring!! 😴 much rather avoid biochem by reading the message boards 😀

We had those topics on our second exam. Your exam is on friday and you are studying from now?? now thats dedication. I always end up studying the night before the exam at around 10 PM.. I definitely have to stop doing that before dental school ( if I get in that is 🙂 ). I am also avoiding homework. I have a 3pg lit paper due tomorrow that I just started.

for those that said the interviewers told them not to bother with the 'thank you letter', how did that come about in your conversation?

I didn't ask. Everyone, except one interviewer, handed me a business card.

He was talking about how he liked one of my answers. Then he told me stories about some of the crazy answers he's heard in the past. That led to bad interview approaches, in general, which included his remark about thank you cards being useless.
