More recently the most memorable people are simply the ones that post the craziest stuff, troll the hardest, or are the meanest. I feel like so many of us want our posts to identify us as the "funny guy" because that's become the guy that's memorable now. It's a forum and that's ultimately what happens to most successful, public forums. We have a shot at something better but a lot of that depends on what we're willing to tolerate as a community. I for one have decided that I will begin to stick up for other posters more when I see something I don't like, even if I don't like that poster.

This is interesting, probably quite true.

I, for one, don't care about being "known" or identified as a funny guy, but I do enjoy a good laugh. That is one of two reasons I started contributing to SDN. Like many, I originally found this place looking for answers. I spent time lurking and back-reading. I didn't really like SDN...it was overblown and nearly impossible to find the advice I needed. If you happen to find a thread relevant to the question you're asking, it's usually from 2001, and people have posted totally conflicting answers with little substantiation for either side. Great. Now you get to decide who has a better avatar or a funnier signature and roll the dice on their suggestions.

When I found some humorous contributors, they kept me coming back and eventually led me to create my own account. Ultimately, after being here a while (including my lurking time) SDN has proven to be somewhat useful (in the relevant sense of helping me on my premed journey). But I had to sift through too much garbage (as well as spew plenty of my own) to find what I needed, and useful information frequently came disguised as something else.

Hostility toward n00bs: BAD
Hostility in general: BAD
Humor: GREAT
Future of SDN: PROFIT!
