The 2011-2012 Underdog Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Me too! I heard the same thing 🙂 wonder how many interview tho.....

I read some of last year's school thread and it seems to say they interview about 550 applicants and then give offers to maybe 250 of those eventually to fill a class of around 135. About 35 of those seats are apparently reserved from their feeder schools/programs. That was last years so those numbers could of course be different this year but that should give us an idea at least.

Wow, so about half of the interviewees are accepted. Maybe I should apply there... but it's so far from texas 🙁 , lol.

Got a secondary from Touro-NY and a Tucom-CA interview invite!!!

TUCOM-CA INVITE!!!!!

This is one of my top schools, as a I am a California Resident.

😀

You're not an underdog.

Yikes!! Has this happened to anyone else...I added two additional schools to AACOMAS after I had already been verified. It has been 2 weeks and my status for those 2 schools is still "submitted to AACOMAS". I would think they would release right away to those schools since I am already verified and released to all the other schools...seems that they do not though :scared: So a warning to anyone thinking of adding new schools after you have been verified...it will not be immediate! Doh!

Definitely average applicant, and not an underdog.

Yeah I added LECOM erie (for some reason I forgot to check the box the first time) after verification. I thought I would've gotten the secondary today... not yet. 👎

Just out of curiosity, are any of you guys URM? I'm the opposite of URM, so I'm just wondering because URM has slight advantage under underdog conditions 😛

3.67 cGPA/3.42 sciGPA
24Q MCAT
-research experience for over a year
-volunteer at hospital for a year
-volunteer at clinic about 4 hours a week
-physician shadowing a DO
-volunteer at Humane Society and Boys and Girls Club
-member of a few other organizations
-good personal statement and rec letters
-teaching assistant for lab class for two semesters

I submitted my primary early June and most of my secondaries last month. I have yet to get an interview and I applied to 6 schools :/ I am kinda freaking out guys...what do you think is going on?

MCATs a little low, what was the split? Also, why only 6 schools? If you're an underdog, you should apply broadly.

My split was 7 V/ 7 Phy Sci/ 10 Bio

I applied to my 6 top choices, I didn't know which other schools to apply to that would seriously consider out of state applicants. I am from Florida so there are only two in state schools here, NSU and LECOM-B.

There are a lot of Private schools that put no preference on out of state/instate. Look up the AACOM CIB for more details. I suggest you broaden your applications, but that's just what I would do in your shoes.

Your application submission is early, your GPAs look good. It may be your MCAT that's tugging you down a bit. Maybe your breakdown did not favor the sciences?

Glancing at your ECs, it shows general commitment. Looks like you have good medical-related volunteering. Decent non-medical experience... However, you seem to be lacking leadership experience? To me, this is really really important.

Anyway, just stay patient. As some people said before, they've had to wait a couple months for an interview invite. Sit tight. 😎

Low MCAT, but you're still in range of the average applicant.

I added on two later as well. It prob took 2-3 weeks for my app to get out. Hopefully they will release yours soon!

Awwww yeaaaa....

Interview Invite for KCOM! I was complete on 8/17. Havent decided on a date yet.. they only offered two dates (10/13) and (10/20) and both of them suck for me. I petitioned via email for a different date. We'll see how that goes.

Congrats Wily! I submitted my supplemental on 8/17, and they sent an email stating "You will receive an email when your secondary application has been processed indicating how you may check your status online." About how long did it take for you to receive this email with the login information after submitting your supplemental?

Does anyone know where I check my cGPA and sGPA on AACOMAS?

About a week. I submitted my stuff on 8/11 and they finally downloaded my LORs from Interfolio on 8/17 and sent me that complete email.

Thanks Iliketoytles!

cGPA: 3.35
sGPA: 3.17

I think I'll join the fun here!

Don't worry guys, I got this one.

DrMaximus, you're not an underdog. get off this thread NOW!! lolol jk 😉, but really I don't think you'd be considered an underdog. You're MCAT is slightly low but your GPA compensates for it. 🙂

See, I was afraid of that happening... 🙁 I didn't mean to step on any toes. I really like this thread and it always keeps me in good spirits about applying. I wasn't sure if I was or not.

You can be an underdog supporter! I believe the thread last year had a list of supporters (people who were borderline underdog). I'd love to hear how your app season turns out so def keep up with everyone in this thread since we can all use all the support we can get on this crazy application journey.🙂

Thanks, I can't wait to see how everyone turns out this year. And if there is a support thread, I'm down to be in it!! 😀

All the best to you guys, I'm rooting for you for sure!

I was just kidding buddy, lol. I'm not really an underdog either but I love this thread a lot. So many smart, determined people here... and the huge amount of interview invites the underdogs are getting shows that you can do it if you put your heart and mind to it! 👍

Seriously. There are a ton of invites already and even some acceptances. It's fantastic.

I myself am waiting for my first interview invite. LMU just completed me recently, so I've got my fingers crossed! :xf:

Good luck! Did you get an email notifying you of your completion at LMU, and how long after mailing it did it take? I just mailed my LMU application a couple days ago... I hope they show me as complete soon.

I'm definitely an underdog (check my MDapplicant) .... So far I'm still waiting on some secondaries to come in (Got screened out for my MCAT a couple times)... Do have any chance of at least getting an interview or should I chalk this cycle up ... (applying to some post bacc as well and retaking the MCAT soon)

Open to any advice, you guys seem to know what you're doing (judging from all the interviews I see👍)

You never know with the AdComms. Stay hopeful. I would look into Post-Bacc programs and study hard for the MCAT. If you can kill the MCAT, you have a lot better chance of getting in with your current stats. Can you retake any science courses to get that sGPA up?

Well your science GPA and MCAT are both low. I don't mean to be rude, but usually with people low in both of these areas need to consider whether science and medicine is the right path for them. I'm not saying it isn't for you, just think about it. If YES, continue reading.... 😉

My honest answer is that you should "chalk it up". Your sGPA and MCAT are just too low, and even if you retake the MCAT and do well... your sGPA will get you screened out. Here's what you need to do.

Retake your MCAT (obviousley). Retake some of your science classes you did poorly in. Take advantage of the grade replacement. Your cGPA isn't too bad. But as your sGPA goes up, your cGPA will go up with it, which is an exciting thought yes? 🙂

I didn't really look at your ECs... since your stats is the priority issue here. Best of luck. :luck:

Yeah I can, I looking into it now or I'll just do an SMP or something like that.. Thanks for your help

I appreciate your honesty and I know I want to do this so I'm going to stick with it and repair my stats for next year!

I actually think he is an underdog. My stats are very similar and have only a few invites so far, when potentially I could have had more. I think MCAT plays a big role - mine is only a 25 - 7P, 9V,9B - with a 3.76 c/sGPa and a professional degree.

However, I think DrMaximus will get interviews.👍

I appreciate it! And I hope your interviews go well! 😀

Iliketoytles: I submitted mine online and it only took about three days to be marked as complete.

Wait how did you submit LMU-DCOM online? Was there an option for that? I thought it was just a .pdf that you had to mail with your check via snail mail.

This is what I did as well. There was a little confusion with my app, but it get completed.

Plan on stat repair, but don't give up hope. I had a lower sGPA than you, and a lower uGPA too. I had a 30 MCAT though. Either way, I got in late in the season. I'm an OMS-1 now and I'm kickin' ass and takin' names so far.

It's obviously wise to begin planning for next year should you not get in. It's wise for everyone to do that regardless of stats. But you need to stay positive about this year. You never know what might happen. Optimism goes a long way IMO.
