The 2011-2012 Underdog Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm right there with you. No invites yet, and I have been in full-out panic mode for a while now 🙁 It probably makes it worse getting on here every day and seeing others get invites, but I just can't stop.

Keep your hopes up because there's a lot of people like you, including myself!

I’ve been following this thread for a while and finally decided to post and join!🙂

cGPA: 3.496
sGPA 3.29
MCAT 25Q (V8/P8/B9)

Solid LORs from a Do and profs, lots of ECs (American Red Cross Intern, hospital volunteer, organization predisdent/board positions, research, etc…), but due to family/personal issues in the past year, I ended up with a C in Orgo, a C+ in Orgo2 (after having to take a withdraw fail), and a C+ in Microbiology.

Submitted my application to 19 schools on August 25th, so just waiting for it to get verified, which will hopefully be sometime soon!:xf:

Similar stats, exact same MCAT breakdown, and submitted just days after you to 15 schools. Interested in seeing how we do!

I have similar stats also...lower GPA and a different MCAT breakdown. Anyways, I submitted my primary app on August 27 and was just verified today. Does that mean we have to wait another week for our app to be released to schools? I know they release on Tuesday AM.

Accepted at NSU-COM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀

Accepted at NSU-COM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😀😀😀😀:

Grats man.

On another note, I got an interview invite to ATSU-SOMA.

I hope I get an acceptance to LECOM-E next week. 👍

I would like to create a spreadsheet so that we all have some additional data to look at. I would like to include information such as:

Red-Acceptance and attending

Green-Acceptance and not attending

Blue-Acceptance after being on the wait-list and attending

Orange-Acceptance after being on the wait-list and not attending

Gray-Interviewed and withdrew without decision due to better offer

Pink-Waitlisted and Rejected

Brown-Rejection

Purple-Applicant interviewed but has not posted information

After the spreadsheet is completed and I have heard from most everyone, I will re-post all the information in a similar format to how djack and hockeydr09 set up the first page. I will color-coordinate all the information using the key I created above.

My idea is to give all future applicants and re-applicants hope, and the more information the better! On last year's thread it looks like some underdogs had multiple interviews but only one acceptance. Was this because they only got one acceptance, or because after getting an acceptance at the underdog withdrew his/her application? With the system I have created I hope that decisions presented by underdogs will be more clear.

I also believe that this system will promote discussion among fellow underdogs as to why certain schools were chosen over others.

All information can be sent to me at [email protected] or you all can just message me. Please let me know if you all would like me to do this, and or what I can change.

Please let me know if you all would like me to do this, and good luck to everyone waiting for interviews and interviewing!!!!!

Thanks DrWilly! Is LECOM-E your number 1?

Hey Fellow Underdogs!

I just got my first interview, KCOM (10/7). I can't wait! Good luck to everyone.

Hey everyone,

In need of more advice. Also, I updated the front page.

Preface: Everything has been going well this semester. I am taking 5 classes, 4 of which are upper level science classes (Micro, Evolution, Cadaver Prosection, Biochem). As of now, I have worked my butt off and done extremely well in Micro, Evolution, and Cadaver. I have A's in all three thus far.

Situation: Biochem is killing me. I have gotten 3 C's in undergrad: Bio II, OChem I and II. OChem I and II was taught by the same prof and my Biochem prof is the same guy. He is a new grad from an Ivy League school, and is extremely frustrating. I know I will run into many challenging people in my life, but he could take the cake. We have a total of 10 students in our class, all of which were on the Dean's List last semester and 7 of which are in the school's Honors Program, including myself. As of now, not one student has above a C in the class. As a result, 1 student has dropped and 3 others are considering it. I know that a C is a distinct possibility in this course, which would kill my otherwise very successful, yet challenging semester.

Option 1: Drop Biochem and get a W on my transcript. I would most likely wind up with A's in all my other classes, especially considering I have done well so far and would have even more time to study with one fewer class. I would also not be able to get my Chemistry minor, which isn't too big of a deal to me. However, the W does not look good.

Option 2: Sweat it out and seriously risk getting another C on my transcript. I also risk the success in my other classes because of the extra time I have to put in for it. I would pick up my chemistry minor. I would not have a W on my transcript.

Help is welcomed 🙂

So is everyone in the class getting a C? If it were me, and was taking classes for the sole purpose of boosting my gpa, then I would drop the class. However, I'm not sure how a "W" looks to Adcoms.

hey i already created a spreadsheet last week you can take a look at it if you like. it should be on the previous page[/SIZE]

Depending how many W's you have, I'd go with that. If you have a max of 2, take the W. 3-4 consider it. 5+ don't get any more W's.

I have been complete at a few schools for about a week now. I was wondering what has been the average time between being complete and receiving an interview for most DO schools for those who have received interviews? I guess I just want to know when to begin freaking out!haha

If everyone is getting a c then I would probly mmention it to the dean Djack. Every class has to have a layout of kids receiving a certain amount of a,s and b,s etc. However, if u choose not too. Drop the class

This would be my second W... My first was in my first semester of college.

I've thought about talking to the dean. However, he doesn't abide by the idea of "a certain number of students should be at an A-B level." He does not scale or curve grades, so what you get it what you get. It sucks. A lot.

Talk to the Dean for sure. This isn't good teaching, in fact, its quite awful. Obviously if everyone is barely getting a C, the teacher isn't doing his job properly.

Hey guys, I kind of consider myself an underdog....please tell me what you think?

I graduate this December with a BS in Chemistry.

cGPA: 3.26
sGPA: 3.62
MCAT: 28 (VR: 10, PS: 9, BS: 9)

Worked at a hospital for the past 6 years.
75 Hours Rounding with a Neurologist

500+ Hours volunteer teaching kids taekwondo for free after school to help them exercise and stay out of trouble.

LOR's: One from the DO Director of the Residency at the hospital I work at.
One from my Chemistry Professor/Med School Advisor

I recently applied to PCOM-Ga (My main choice since I live in Georgia), LECOM-B and LECOM-E.

spreadsheet is updated ... Djack will put on front page soon

good job so far you guys!!!

You're not an underdog. You have a solid sgpa and MCAT, cGPA is a bit low but decent EC's. Cast a wider net than 3 osteopathic schools (8-12) and you have a good shot.

Hey Guys!
I am a kentucky resident applying to Pikeville, LMU-DCOM, VCOM, and WVCOM.
Stats:
cgpa:3.36
sgpa:3.30
Mcat: 21R

Low MCAT is whats holding me back. My EC's are great, directed two community service programs, tutored, and worked for 2 non-profit animal groups. Also have 300+ hours shadowing (MD and DO, have shadowed 3 DO's total thus far). I really want to want to work in a rural area and do internal medicine/ peds so I feel as though Pikeville or any of the above schools would be perfect for me.

Good luck to everyone this cycle!

Well, you said it yourself in your first sentence. I doubt that Pikeville or DMU-COM will take such a low MCAT, local or not. Especially with a lower-than-average GPA. You know what to do, good luck!!

Just got my first interview at WCU-COM! This is my second time applying (first time DO) and my first interview...I am so happy right now!

Hoping to get other interviews soon...

I was complete at most schools early July-August and have yet to hear back. Any ideas why? I sent my secondary to WCU-COM only about 2 weeks ago and already heard back from them...

Just to let you know...my stats are
3.67 cGPA/3.54 sGPA/24 MCAT

Cancer Research
Bacterial research with conference presentation and publication
Volunteer at hospital and free health clinic
teaching assistant for a year
Physician shadowing in the ER
Member of a few more clubs
OUTREACH tutor program
very strong personal statement and letters of rec

I think my application is overall good...so why have I not heard back for almost two months now? I have sent updates, kept in touch...etc etc..

Above-average GPA, below-average MCAT, and subjectively solid EC's, I don't see why not. It's your responsibility to call the schools and verify the status of your application , especially if it's already October and you haven't heard a peep. Any other red flags on your app?

3.41 CGPA
3.65 SGPA
14 withdrawals.
5 from dropping out due to depression in my 2nd year.

Took a year and half off working minimum wage. Worked my but off to repair my GPA. Got straight A's for three semesters.

9 W's and a B+ the next three semesters due to depression (my fiancee and I were in possibly the most unstable relationship ever). Looking back we probably should have broken up and got back together later, but I had to choose between school and comforting her for basically a year. I wanted to take time off again but my parents wouldn't let me. I chose her and it stabilized.

We've been together almost five years and finally have a rock solid and healthy relationship; however, now I've returned to school (after working minimum wage to pay off personal debt and money I owed to my university), moved out of my parents house, and will graduate next spring with a pre-med degree that I have no idea what I'll do with. I'm getting straight A's again, but I know it's too late.

So yea, should I go back to school for another two years and be a nurse or something?

First make up your mind. Do you want to be a doctor or be a nurse? If it's so easy for you to give up on being a doctor to be a nurse, maybe medicine is not right for you. Maybe even nursing is wrong for you.

No red flags on my application that I can think of. And I have called/emailed every school and all my materials (transcripts, rec letters, etc) are in...So yeah I dk why I am waiting so long...

Updated front page.

Also who has two thumbs 👍👍 and got an interview.... This guy!! Interview next Tuesday! (I think I got a time given up by someone else). I'm not gonna give any more specifics cause I don't want to jinx it lol. Wish me luck!

Accepted! Phone call last Thursday but I haven't had a chance to post on here. All the rest of my interviews are completed and I'm waiting to hear. Good luck to everyone!

Whatever happened to Touro NY??

I have been waiting for Touro NY for the longest time, but haven't heard anything from them. And it seems like the school specific thread is pretty quiet regarding new interview invites.

Underdog! Love it. 3.6 cGPA 3.9 sGPA 20O (V-6, P-6, B-8) first try and 21M (V-8, P-5, B-8). Studied for 3 months the 2nd time only a month the first. Applied, ACCOMAS verified 9/30, to 11 DO schools and 1 MD. Really thinking about retaking the MCAT in Jan to hopefully improve but can't decide, afraid I'll make a 22L 🙂. But I am glad for this post and hope it helps many. By the way I have great EC's and LORs, and my last 120 hours (210 total) cGPA is 3.94. MCAT is my Drawback. Hope all will accept me as an underdog.

Underdog here. . Took the MCAT in a daze (had a death in the family two days before..) Compared to my practice exams, the 9/2 MCAT was the hardest thing I had seen. By the end, I questioned whether parts of it were in English. Good luck all!

Djack, if its lmudcom lemmme know. Also, own that ish. Be confident and don't bring up the weaknesses in your app unless they do then u would explain what happened and put a positive spin on them and what u learned. Own it man. I know ull do great

Congrats DJack!! I've really been rooting for you man. It must've been hard updating the front page while you were still waiting for your first invite. But now you got it!!! Hopefully many more will come, but I don't think you'll need 'em! Rock the one you have and you'll be golden. 😎

Congrats again! You deserve it. 🙂

Aw man.

"Alternate" at LECOM-E. Was really hoping for that first acceptance so that I could put my mind at ease. Oh well, it was a learning experience (1st med school interview) and the group setting didn't really allow me to highlight my best qualities. I was also nervous as hell haha.

I'll have to practice harder for AZCOM and NSU coming up so maybe this is a good thing?

From what I understand, LECOM pulls quite a few applicants from their Alternate list.
