Grats on VCOM interview invite. Hope it goes well for you. Have you considered retaking your MCAT? You'd be an awesome candidate everywhere if you could get that MCAT up.

You're not an underdog. Your cGPA is 0.4 low, sGPA is 0.3 high and MCAT is slightly above average.

Oh I am, but believe me I'd rather not be. I didn't even meet KCUMB's 3.25 minimum cgpa secondary app requirement, but they were kind enough to review my app and send one my way.

I've spend the past three years post bacc-ing it to try to undo a 2.4c/<2.0s undergraduate, my MCAT is around average for most schools. Purely stats-wise, my current sGPA w/ upward trend is my one saving grace.

I see a couple 3.6/3.4/26's (hbphan) and 3.7/3.7/25's (drdioiadds) on that front page. Go tell them about not being underdogs, bud.

I think it has to do with being a canadian resident, which does make drdioaddis an underdog!

Also, I didn't meet KCUMB's 3.25 sGPA requirement either - but, as my signature signifies, that doesn't mean anything if you can wow them with your personality and essays!

Finally, I don't think you're an underdog either. Your [sGPA*10 + .5(MCAT)] score is 50.5 - well above both the average applicant and average matriculant data. They defined an underdog as someone who has a score lower than the average applicant.

Good luck, I'm rooting for you!

You're right, they're not underdogs by the standards set for this thread (MCAT, sGPA, and cGPA). But maybe the Canadian residency does make an underdog.

You were a massive underdog then you obviously got your act together and now are not one. Congrats.

However, one school not giving you a secondary doesn't make you a current underdog.

I have considered retaking it but I took my MCAT on July 28th and upon receiving my scores I could have only retaken it late in September. I had planned to study for the entire month of June and most of July before I took the MCAT. However I was offered the opportunity to return to Mongolia to continue my work with an NGO that is helping teach the Mongolian surgeons and their support staff how to preform basic laparoscopic surgery, and as a result the time I had budgeted disappeared. I had the time to spend a total of three days reviewing material before the exam as I also work full time as a surgical technologist. I will definitely retake the MCAT if I do not get in this year, because i know it is my main weakness this application cycle.

I see. Sounds like an amazing experience. I just feel like you're going to be limiting yourself on where you can go to school with a 23 MCAT. If you could wait and do it properly, a lot of doors will open up for you. That's all. Best of luck.

Either way, a major deficit in one of the three areas sets you up at a considerable disadvantage to varying degrees, whether that be MCAT, sgpa or cgpa. I'm glad this year's thread took into account cumgpa, as that was the main thing that was missing from last years'.

Thanks man, I don't see anything in your sig but I'm assuming you're gonna be going to KCUMB? Congrats! That's a great school. I'm definitely hoping for that "wow" factor as well, fingers crossed.

Second interview invite in one week 🙂 I'm on overload, my grades are due for my 7th/8th grade classes and all I want to do is get set for my interviews. Looking at the front page, this class of underdogs are not doing bad at all🙂

Interview at WVSOM!

Being a Canadian does make you an underdog (except at MSU). It limits the number of schools you can apply to. Secondly, My mcat made me an underdog as well. Anything under a 27, limits your interview invites.

MSUCOM gives Canadians equal preference as US students? That's interesting, didn't know that.

I applied before getting my MCAT score, but based on my stats: 23 MCAT, 3.59 cumulative GPA, 3.33 Science, where else do I have a chance? My healthcare experiences, leadership, and research are pretty good.

I got accepted at KYCOM, wait-listed at LMU-DCOM, and here's the rest of secondaries I have gotten but don't know if I should submit?

A.T. Still University, Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, MO
A.T. Still University, School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona, AZ
Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine of Midwestern University, AZ
Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine, IA
Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine -Virginia Campus, VA
Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine, MO
Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine - Erie/Seton Hill, PA---> Didn't get a secondary from them
Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, PA
Rocky Vista University, College of Osteopathic Medicine, CO
West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, Admissions Office, WV-> Didn't get a secondary from them

Yeah, so I've been very lucky and I guess they liked my personality and essays with LMU and KYCOM, and I don't know if I can get lucky anywhere else?

Any thoughts, comments, or suggestions?

I am definitely an underdog!

So, I have only one interview scheduled so far. So much is hinging on this interview as it is my top choice. It would be amazing to get an acceptance on my first interview and not have to deal with this.. again. It's coming up soon and I'm SO nervous and excited. I just want to get it over with and know my fate. Anyone else in a similar position?

You're not alone, only one interview invite as well and a little nervous that I haven't gotten more yet...guessing I had better rock this one :scared:

Hey guys! 🙂 I have been meaning to check in ever so often to give some words of encouragement to those underdogs that were like me last year (and so many years before that when I applied!). Anyways, I know you are almost half way through this cycle already... And probably frustrated and sick of waiting. But I want you guys to realize that everything happens for a reason. If you don't get in this cycle, there is a reason for it. And when you do finally get to where you are supposed to be, you will look back on it and understand why... I know this may not sound like something you want to hear in the midst of all this waiting... Haha. But it is SO true.

A lot of you have the odds stacked against you... Maybe with a low GPA, or a low MCAT, or both like I had. But even though you can't change the past and fix these things, you can decide what happens from today on. You need to advocate for yourself. This is the most important thing you can do while you wait. If this means you need to write letters to the admissions committee to plead your case, do it. You have nothing to lose! Or it could mean that you need to retake the MCAT... If that is what you have to do, don't take this lightly and really try your best to fix your MCAT score. The MCAT is of course not a good indication of how well you will do in med school, or how great of a doctor you will become... But it is a hoop you have to jump through sometimes. And if that is what is holding you back, you would be doing yourself a disservice if you don't fix it because you will be hindering your own future.

Now that I am finally in medical school, I try not to take anything for granted. I am grateful to be here, even when we have like 7 exams in one week and I haven’t slept in days. Haha. Not to say I don’t do my fair share of complaining… We all do. But it’s an amazing feeling to reach this goal I have been working towards for the last 7 years. And I now know that if I had gotten in when I first applied, I wouldn’t have been ready for this rigorous course they put us through.

Anyways, Good luck everyone! 🙂 Even if you don’t get in this year, don’t give up hope… It will happen if you want it bad enough and never give up. Persistence is the real key to success. 🙄

🙄

Definitely agree with that!

It’s good to hear these encouraging words. I have been getting very discouraged lately only hearing rejections or deferred decisions. I'm hoping to hear good news soon. At this point is it safe to assume that at least half of all the classes are filled? There are a lot of schools that I still haven't heard anything from. Does this mean they will just leave you hanging/silent rejection? I also heard that a lot of schools will pull people last minute is this true?

Both of those are true. A lot of schools (more commonly seen with MD schools) will just leave you hanging, even if they know you don't have a shot (*cue negative feelings about Texas schools... 😡)

Schools also pull people from the waitlist at the last minute, assuming you're on it. Noshie is a good example of that. I think I remember reading that she was moving to arizona already for AZCOM but was accepted by TCOM last minute. Could be wrong... maybe she can expand on her story.

Anything can happen.

Just got a phone call this morning interview invite from VCOM!!!
It’s my first one 11/29!!!
I'm so nervous!!!
Any advice from anyone that interview at VCOM?
I have no idea what to expect and I think this is my only shot!!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Wow, I wish I would've stumbled upon this thread earlier! It's nice to see the success stories and be reminded that we're not alone. Good luck to everyone.

Hopefully by subscribing to this thread it'll give me enough spunk to hold my head up again. I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I'm not getting in this year. Still not one interview. :-(

Probably heard this before, but retake your MCAT man. Scoring 30+ on practices then doing poorly due to bad news the morning of is just screaming for a retake. You can open many many doors if you can get that sucker up. Retake in January and you might still have a chance this year at some good D.O. schools or retake next cycle and drown yourself in acceptance letters.

Updated the front page. Thanks to those who PMed me their stats as well.

Holy long Underdog list Batman!

underdog story pround to post here...

1st 2 years my gpa was a 2.0 (all c-)

hard work: last 2 years 4.0, masters 4.0
and gpa moved up to a 3.3 (repeating classes) now to a 3.5

mcat with a 27S...dont give up...keep up the good work

So, I am waiting on an interview invite and I am wondering if it is acceptable, and if so when and why it is acceptable to call the admissions dept of my top choice school and let them know that they are my top choice?

Also, I read some threads about a letter of intent. Is this beneficial or is it risky annoying the school?

Thanks fellow underdogs

Generally you write a letter of interest which is basically a glorified update letter. Update them on what you're currently doing, and why they are your top choice and why you would fit in well.

Letters of Intent are for when you are on the waitlist post-interview and basically plead and say you will go to their school 100% if they accept you. Good luck :luck:

<-- Accepted at DCOM too. Woot!

Finished interview at TUNCOM, just got an invite to KCUMB. Keep em coming:xf:

Just got the call from VCOM-CC, accepted to the class of 2016!!

Just wanted to give an update and offer some words of encouragement to those still waiting to hear back from schools.

When I joined this thread, I didn't have high expectations on receiving many interviews. My stats were 3.2scgpa/3.5cgpa and a 25 MCAT. However, I believe I wrote a strong personal statement and was able to get interviews at KCUMB, WVSOM, CCOM, TOURO-NY, and LMU-COM. I interviewed at KCUMB, WVSOM, & CCOM and received admission to all of them! I have decided not to attend the TOURO-NY and LMU-COM interview (hopefully opening up slots for those of you who hope to go there). I've also chosen to go to CCOM next fall, so that will open slots for hopefuls in the KCUMB & WVSOM camp. Please don't lose hope; if you have a passion for osteopathic medicine and bettering the human condition, don't be afraid to show it, especially in your interviews. I took the MCAT 3x, 25 being my highest score (I even scored lower on my 3rd attempt). Sure, the admissions game depends on GPA/MCAT, but I truly believe a majority of the schools try to seek out the best potential doctors and the best doctors aren't defined by their GPA/MCAT.

Best of luck to all of you and please, never give up!

That's great! I also opened up a spot at TouroNY for interview as I declined their invite today.

Interview at TOUROCOM-NY!! The interview is after I have a deposit due in Dec but I still think it's worth checking out bc u never know where u may fit in best.

Stats:
3.32 sgpa, 3.41 cgpa, MCAT 25 (best score after 5 times)

I called into the admissions office today and they said my interview email was sent to the wrong address. It was sent out two weeks ago.

Don't hesitant to call the admissions office!!!!!

For those of you who are not aware or have not done so yet, please go to http://www.capwiz.com/aacom/issues/a...983501&type=CO and type in your name and info so your voice is heard. Your future as a physician is on the line as the super committee of congress is trying to cut the funding for residency programs in half, which means you have a good chance at not getting into one. They are meeting on 11/23/11 so act fast!

I've been a little delayed in posting this, but I have been accepted at WesternU-Pomona!

Currently, I am trying to decide weather or not to go to Touro-Ca or WesternU. It's been a very difficult choice so far...

Also, for the person that is making the spreadsheet, Perfectcoat I think? I withdrew from my interviews at Touro-NY, Lecom-E, and KCOM. I also, was put on the alternate list at Lecom-B (but I withdrew), and I was placed on a high waitlist at Touro-NV (I will soon withdraw from here too.)

Good Luck to all of you, and if any of you have any questions about interviews at LECOM-B, NSU-COM, AZCOM, Touro-Ca, Touro-NV, WVSOM, or WesternU-Pomona please PM me!!! I am more than willing to help out however I can.
