The 2011-2012 Underdog Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just got my MCAT score back today. Wasn't happy : (

10V / 6PS / 10BS, R

Damn physical sci bringing me down!

Totals:
MCAT 26R
cGPA 3.45
sGPA 3.41

Damn, sorry to hear that. Gotta get that 6 up higher, at least a 7 I believe from reading some other threads. Study dat physics/gen chem! You can do it.

Looks like I'll be adding myself to the underdog thread.🙁 Here are my stats:
cGPA: 3.65
sGPA: 3.50
MCAT: 23P (7/7/9)
EC: Very good, includes 1.5 yrs research, publication pending, 1+ year ER volunteering, 2 years work experience in finance including leadership role, 75 hours shadowing, and academic research for a semester (no pub).
LORs: Excellent, includes two DOs.
PS: Excellent.

I'm applying to Pikesville, RVU, and WVSOM with my current scores, then I'm retaking the MCAT on July 28th and will add more schools...and will probably sign up for another MCAT a month from now to finish it off. I was averaging around 26 on my MCAT and don't know what happened on the exam.😕

Can anyone offer any suggestions or does anyone think I have a decent shot of gaining acceptance with my stats??? Any input is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

23 is kind of sketchy. Average is 26-27. Might be able to get away with a 25 due to your gpa being slightly higher than the average (3.3-3.4). I'd study hard and try to get a better score.

Hey guys, I'm getting a little apprehensive about going to a caribbean and thought I might give D.O. a shot. What are my chances at some of the lower tier D.O. schools like LECOM, NYCOM, and UNECOM?

undergrad: top 25 school
EC's: 4 years (400 hours) head coach youth basketball, 1 year clinical research (200 hours), 50 hours clinical hospital volunteer, various clubs, various part time jobs
GPA: 3.1 cum, 2.96 science (going by AMCAS gpa's), No F's or D's, no retakes but two W's
MCAT: 30P

Also, if I apply right now is that considered pretty late in the cycle?

I wasn't planning to retake this cycle. It doesn't make sense, does it? I would need at least two more months to study to the point of being ready again, (especially to beat the 10s I got in other sections) and by that time it's too late for schools to consider an application. I'm prepared to possibly not get accepted this cycle and re-take in the winter or spring for next year, but as for now, I'll be applying the way I am : /

Many will disagree with the "lower tier" assumption for NYCOM and UNECOM, fyi.

I think your 30 will get you an interview somewhere, just apply broadly. Good luck!

This thread is fantastic. What would be even more fantastic is an interview invite! Every time my phone buzzes and makes the email noise I jump. I have a feeling that will eventually stop happening, haha.

As I told moca earlier this week, there is always hope! I got into KCUMB and WVSOM and canceled two other interviews with a 23R mcat (7p 8v 8b)!! 3.73cGPA & 3.53sGPA.

Don't give up underdogs, I was there! Oh, and apply early..like right now..

Do ya'll think I have a shot? I'm super nervous... I'm trying to start prewriting my secondaries. 🙄

A 27 MCAT and 3.7 sGPA does not make you anywhere near an underdog. Sorry. Best of luck to you though... fill out those applications timely and interview well and you will get in somewhere.

tbone, your post scares me, did you not apply D.O. your first time around?

Yeah, in this case, I really wouldn't worry about the non-science GPA. Your cGPA is still relatively good anyway. I don't know how much emphasis they put on non-science GPA.

Just had my registration today, and class starts Monday. I feel like I can finally officially change my status to "medical student"! Congrats to people with early interviews. If anyone ever needs any advice/encouragement, you know where to find me.

Good luck to the underdogs this cycle.:luck:

your a tx resident and you didnt apply to any texas schools? at least TCOM. cmon man!

btw your not an underdog in any way shape or form. as a matter of fact I think you would have a decent shot getting into some MD schools in your state as it has a million med schools with tuition at a bargain. seriously apply to your state schools, especially tcom. and i think youll stand a good chance of sitting in a med school classroom a year from now. gl

thanks man youve definitly accomplished alot. kick ass in med school man👍
hey hockey doc. did you send in a LOI to lecom? just wondering cause i called to see if there was anything else they needed from me and they said no as long as your app is under review your done on your end. he then said if I wanted to send in a loi that i could. this is my second time applying but im just wondering why there not showing me any love as i have been under review for a while and people who submitted their secondaries after me have recieved invites?

stats are
3.26 cgpa
3.2 sgpa

took mcat three times
last was the best with a
PS 9 VR 7 BS 9

25 O total
bieng ESL makes VR difficult

im thinking its because of my low VR score as Im sensing from accepted applicants that they are big on VR at lecom. oh also after taking it three times i have consistantly pulled 7's in vr and 9's in BIO. reason i took it twice prior is i kept pulling 6's in PS. finally did though. i dunno man. you can pm me if you would rather.

He probably just copied and pasted off his AACOMAS. Texas uses TMDSAS so he might not have even started that yet? If not, he better get on it as it's more tedious than the AACOMAS. I agree though, apply to your texas in-state schools for cheap tuition and awesome education. Heavy instate bias.. I wish I lived in texas for a year.

Does the WCU regional preference include Texas residents?

In our class, we do have several people from Texas.

WCU-COM is not unlike other schools-Ohio U & Pikeville in particular, which actively recruit applicants from their region that want to stay in their region. This does not mean that they will not be open to accept students from outside the region, but I do think they want you to be open to staying in the region.

LMU & Ga-PCOM both have regional biases also, although not as strong as the above schools. I think the southern DO schools, with the possible exception of the FL schools, all have some sort of regional bias.

These schools that I mentioned were founded, ideally, to meet the shortage of Primary Care Physicians in the area they are located. That is their mission. I would suggest that any applicant to a medical school find out these types of things before they apply to the school.

Out of the schools I interviewed at, WCU was my clear # 1 choice

I will be 52 when I start medical school next Monday.

I had a < 3.0 GPA undergrad GPA from over 20 years ago. I went back to college a couple of years ago to do some Post-Baccalaureate work. I was able to maintain a 3.6 GPA and get a 29 on the MCAT.

It is possible underdogs!!!!

http://oldmanmedschool.livejournal.com/

i applied there last year. from NJ. didnt even get a secondary. pissed about it. but you know what? you never know. i think your better off imo if your going to add schools to add ones that don't have a strong regional bias. just so you know your not really wasting your money IMO. and trust me, its a lot of money. i would add either the lecom's touros, pcoms etc. they dont have a regional bias at all. except maybe pcom who tends to take kids from the east more often. and has somewhat of a bias. (60percent PA rez) but do more research. maybe add dmu. dont bother with pikeville or wcu imo its just a waste of money. plus pcsom has such a small class size.

In my interview @ WCU, I was told that they only send out secondary applications to those they are serious about interviewing. They said that they did not want to waste applicants money, as medical school itself was expensive enough. Therefore WCU sent out far less secondaries than a lot of DO schools.

I apologize about the multiple posts but I just wanted to make sure that accurate information about WCU was given.

cGPA: 3.02
sGPA: 2.88
MCAT 28 (11s in both the sciences and a 6 in verbal *wtf*)

I applied very late last year and interviewed at Touro-NV. was placed on a medium waitlist, havent not heard since. I only applied to 5 schools last year, getting more down this time around!

So i assume u took the June 16th MCATs, but also the 8am exam? I heard the 8am PS was killer.
I took the 2pm June 16th exam.
9 PS, 10 VS, 9 BS = 28O
that was my 2nd MCAT tho.

I took my first MCAT in apr and got a 9 BS, 5 VS, 8 BS = 22M.

how did you improve your verbal so much??? i really hope that admission committees take note that my science scores are solid and although my verbal is low, english is my third language.. im perfectly fluent, i just lack reading comprehension in topics i could care less about (most of which the verbal section covers)

For me, verbal was all about active reading. Have to pick out the main idea and find the author's supportive arguements. Before I studied for the MCAT I would always zone out on passages I found boring. Try to find something to read that bores you and read it while taking notes.

During my mcat i was bored to death by the passages but I practiced at picking out key ideas so I was able to get a 10 which is fine with me. I was averaging 9-11 on practice tests.

Just got interview invite from Lecom B for August 19th

Could you retake some classes? Your MCAT is great, esp. your sciences. How did you do so well in PS and BS but have such a low sGPA? That will be a red flag to some. Best of luck! :luck:

Sorry for the late reply. Yes I did apply to all my state schools, I just put the DO ones since this is the DO section lol. I hope I get somewhere in-state... I could really use that in-state tuition.

Don't be here next year. Make the changes you need to make to get your GPA up now and kick butt on your MCAT. While there is a lot of optimism in this thread, it is not a fun place to be. :whoa:

This is a good place to be. I goofed up at college my first Two years with a 1.6, incorporated my past bacc into my first degree if that makes any sense (retook what I failed before I continued) and am now at a 3.3, projecting a 3.5-6 upon graduation in a year. Even with that kind of trend I will still consider myself an underdog because of the explaining im going to have to do, and the fact that the worst part of my undergrad performance was at a community college. Those numbers are with retakes factored in, my M.D. gpa will be like a sweet 3.0 if that, no worries because I dont plan on appling M.D. anywho, just putting things into perspective.

Hey man! Congrats on the TCOM interview. I have a question for ya. My stats are pretty similar to yours... I submitted my TCOM secondary about a week and a half ago, but still no word from them. I think it might have to do with the fact that I didn't get an email from TCOM tellling me they received my primary. You know the email that says "TMDSAS has notified us that your primary application is being sent to our office." and gives all the login instructions. Do you think that they might have missed my primary app? I checked TMDSAS and I did indeed check the UNT box for it to be sent there.

Anyway, let me know what you think. Did you get this email? And how long after you submitted your secondary did you get the invite?

Congrats again buddy. 👍

Oh I completely understand and can appreciate schools that do that. However, for some people with average to lower than average stats, they tend to apply to schools that either A) dont screen or B) send or accept secondaries from all applicants. That way their secondary essays help them shine and thus may increase their chance of bieng granted an interview. Last year when I had applied, in the CIB under "secondaries" it stated that they were sent to "all applicants" and that there was no screen whatsoever. If I had known about their new policy of screening applicants they would most likely interview based on their primary prior to sending the secondary. I probably would not have sent in my primary application. Thats why I was frusterated, almost a false advertisement on their part. I do appreciate their new policy, just wish it was marked properly under the CIB is all. Im sure WCU COM is going to be a great school and really help out the medical community down in the south. Good luck down there

and thank you for the support, i really hope I do perform well

and thanks DJACK!

I understand your frustration and your point. This time last year, I would have definitely considered myself an underdog. (Applying to med school when you are 51 😱.) Like any new school, WCU had to look at what did and did not work from year 1 to year 2 and made changes.

THANKS! My primary was sent out on June 3rd (email from TMDSAS) and on the 23rd I got the email from TCOM saying "has notified us that your primary is being sent to us" blah blah blah... I completed the secondary towards the end of June and got the call for my interview July 14th.

So I didn't get a confirmation email (official receipt of the primary) from TCOM, it may be worth a phone call to verify that they've received it. Definitely get on the secondary app ASAP if you haven't done so already. PM me if you have any questions, and join us on the school specific thread, lots of great info there! Good luck! :luck:

I have invites to LECOM-B and AZCOM, August and September, respectively. Not sure I'm on the front page though DJack!! 😉
