I just found out that one of the contestants on this seasons The Biggest Loser is a student at DMUCOM. Anyone know how she is doing? Seeing as though I could stand to lose a few pounds myself (ok, more than a few 🙁 ) I thought about applying to go on the show... but the time commitment must be huge. I would not want to take that much time off from school anyway. Besides, what are the chances they would let two medical students on.
 
It's "loser" and "lose". I know, lame, but...I can't help it. 🙁

Ok... So I'm fat and I can't spell.... Whats your point? Somehow I don't think a few extra O's garbled the meaning of my post so bad that people missed the point. Anyway, I changed it to make me feel like less of a "LOSER." LOL.

Glad I didn't go to DMU-COM.

Hey, give the poster a break. Biggest Looser still can makes sense for the show if your clothes are more loose after losing so much weight, right?

UNE has a nice gym and you will have to find 30-45 min a day to relief anger.

Are you sure they were from DMU-COM? What year? I thought I saw a guy that was from U of Iowa that was a former football player on there, but I might be wrong...
 
Yes she is from DMU. She was in the 2008 class but took the time to do the show and is now in the 2009 class.

This is correct. I was told by a couple of administrators at DMU.

I did hear that, and it is true. She is doing well, somebody told me she looks great but I haven't seen her myself. I'm just glad she did something about it, it had to be hard cause she defered a year of school to go do it..........
 
Her reasoning for doing it, as I was told, was she can't tell her patients to eat healthy and exercise regularly by looking the way she did. It's good to practice what you preach.

XXXXXXXXXX (name obfuscated to protect the innocent), a GSBS graduate in December 2003, is a contestant on the NBC television series "The Biggest Loser."

XXXXXXX, who earned a Master's degree in Clinical Research Management, is currently a medical student at Des Moines University of Osteopathic Medicine.

"The Biggest Loser" offers participants the opportunity to undergo a radical physical makeover without any kind of surgery. The series is in its second season. Contestants compete for a grand prize of $250,000 in a safe and recommended manner through comprehensive diet and exercise. The unscripted one-hour reality series gathers contestants from across the country to face real-life temptations while being provided with approved weight-loss skills and resources in an effort to help them transform their bodies, health -- and ultimately, their lives.

"The Biggest Loser" provides 14 contestants -- who are divided into the red team (women) and the blue team (men) -- challenges, temptations, weigh-ins and eliminations until the final contestant remains to claim the title of "the biggest loser." Go ahead and apply for the show but if you don't get get in you can still lose the weight as long as you have some kind of plan and are consistent. If you want to drop some weight try to do so now and don't wait for the show. I have no idea how much you have to lose but I dropped 30lbs in about 6 months with moderate exercise and just changing a few things in my eating habits. Good luck!

I wasnt really serious about applying for the show... loosing weight is just hard in med school... for lots of reasons.
 
LOL. sorry. I had 2 friends on reality TV shows so if someone tells me they want to go on a show now it does not seem like an outrageous possibility.

any tips? i'm having a hard enough time now eating well and forget about exercising. however, i walk everywhere, which i'll probably have to give up in med school.

as for this woman on the show, i think it's great that she's committed to improving her health. doctors ask this of their patients (or should), and it only seems reasonable that they take care of themselves, too. i don't like "the biggest loser," though, because it makes dieting and exercise seem too hard -- i wonder how many people are driven away from attempting to lose weight after watching a show like that. also, it's sort of dangerous because they encourage people to lose so much weight so quickly.
 
Yes, she does go to DMU and she does look great.

Cliff, there's a pic of her on the portal. She does look great! It had to be hard being separated from her kids so long!

Why are you having trouble exercising?

For me, I gained about 15 lbs in the first two years and am now trying to lose them. My problem was motivation. Once you get started exercising, it is a lot easier. If you start making it a part of your routine, like eating or bathing, it makes it easier to continue with it. Eating well will only get you so far, because your body soon adapts and you start to conserve calories. You need to burn them as well as take in less. (It's all about I/O.)

Don't fall for fad diets either. South beach isn't too bad because they focus on good carbs and lean protein. My FPs advice was stay away from anything that is white--white sugar, white starch (white potatoes), white wheat, and white rice products-- focus on brown grains and whole wheat products. She also called it the "caveman" diet, meaning eat what only you could have picked or grown, "if it comes from a factory, don't eat it." Otherwise, try to stay away from processed foods. Also, try to cut back on your portions. The American diet these days is too large.

Don't end up like a majority of us and spend all your time either studying, sleeping, slacking off, etc. like I did. My goal is to go home for christmas this year and at least like my pre-medical school self...
 
motivation is a huge part of my problem, but i also just don't have time right now and will have less once school starts. lots of times i don't get home until after nine, which would force me to workout either then or wake up at 4 something and do it then. neither option really appeals to me. also, i used to work out all the time and really liked it but now just don't want to. i know i just need to get back in the habit and am being lazy.

honestly, i think it might be easier in medical school because i'll only be doing one thing instead of fifty million different things like i am right now (working fulltime, volunteering, taking classes).

How true. I think med school will actually be a reprieve from my schedule the last 1 1/2 years.
 
I have a few problems... Overeating, lack of exercise. I feel like I need every waking moment to study. A lot of people can study in the gym, but I cant read with all that distraction. Im working on it. Im doing weight watchers with my wife, and we got an eliptical machine for home. Its going ok. We will see what the future holds. 😎

Oh, there's time. What I do is to go to the gym during lunch. I then eat lunch in lecture. It makes great sense for me, as I stay more alert when I'm eating, anyway. So more peppy in class and I get in a good cardio workout over the lunch hour.

I normally do cardio 3x per week during lunch. Immediately after class, I'll go back to the gym and lift for an hour.

I pack my lunch and then make sure I bring a towell so that I can shower off after my workouts and then hit the books right after I finish my lifting routines. Really, ideally, I'd pack 2 meals. Eat lunch and then eat right after lifting. Hard to cook that much, but I need to start doing it.
