The closing of 'Pre-meds and "functional anatomy"'

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

Do you agree with the closing of the thread/poll on virginity?

  • Poll closed .
the idea is to maintain some degree of professionalism, even if it is just a career-oriented forum.

If a thread like that was made in the lounge, it wouldn't have gotten closed.

I think it is incredibly Victorian to have closed the thread/poll on virginity. It is useful in showing something about the premed lifestyle in an area directly affected by academics and the demands of the process. GoSpursGo, I don't understand your discomfort over sexuality.

I would like to know how the rest of SDN feels about having the poll closed.

It was perhaps mildly amusing, but overall the original thread itself was fairly silly.

Making a poll asking whether or not it should have been closed, doubly so. Move on...

Yes that must be it, in a forum with such long-lived threads as "would you eat a poop hot-dog to gain admittance to your first-choice school." GoSpursGo was wrong, IMO, to close the thread. There was nothing deviant about the thread. For people who are in a "professional school," I think it shows a sort of immaturity to close the thread.

👎

This thread should be closed too.

Well as the person who started it, I'm not particularly saddened that it was closed, but do feel like it was done in haste.

The reasons cited were 1) it was off topic and 2) overtly sexual

I think 1) has been addressed by others. 1/4 of threads and a much higher percentage of posts within those threads do not relate directly to applying to medical schools. From rap music to clothing to the current "anatomical fails of childhood," most the things on here except the frequent "I got a B: Is the world over?," or "Should I Withdraw?" are off-topic. This clearly isn't why thread was closed.

So that leaves us with reason 2 and "professionalism." First, nothing in thread appeals to prurient, lewd, or lustful interests. As biologists, we understand the evolutionary value of survival and reproduction. As aspiring physicians, we understand the pyschosocial value of sexual relationships. In fact, a simple search of PubMed will reveal hundreds of citations of peer-reviewed works investigating sexual attitudes and practices among various population groups. There is no reason a thread with no obscenity that extended such questions into our own population should be closed.

If you want to talk about it, move it to the lounge or the "Single Students" forum...
