First off I'm relatively new to the SDN network, but stumbled across is and it seems like a great resource.
Currently I am applying for IM programs with the plan of fast tracking into heme/onc for a future academic career. I know it is still early to be planning all this out given I'm not even into a program, but I've already been involved with heme/onc research for 2+ years now and want ot make sure I am making good career decisions when trying to plan as best I can.
My question is regarding academic heme/onc in the future to come ie, the lifestyle (work hours, daily schedule, compensation), and potential for growth. Specifically, will the field see a drop in compensation with new healthcare legislature and how will current economic trends in funding impact the field of heme/onc research? What is the current demand for academicians in the field? Any experience with these changes?
Also, if you fast track into a fellowship, what are the disadvantages?
Thanks in advance guys!
