Hello everyone! Is anyone living at the Helix? I'm browsing for an apartment but I'm not sure that I want to live in Pomona based from what I heard about surrounding neighborhoods. I would really appreciate some feedback before sending in my leasing application. Thanks a bunch!!! 😉

Pomona's really not as bad as SDN'ers would have you believe. I believed the hype too, and it caused me to commute 30 minutes every morning and an hour every afternoon for a year. I moved to pomona in september, and it's been great. there are nice parts of pomona, and it's good to be close, because traffic sucks. the helix looks pretty nice (though i haven't been inside), and the prices seem comparable to other places nearby. good luck!

I agree with the Fish, all of Pomona isn't bad. The helix looks like it can be nice, but I wouldn't want to leave my car there; and my car is a POS.

I agree - Pomona has its nice areas (I was at a classmate's house last night and it's beautiful). I was at another classmate's place at the Helix a couple days ago and it's really nice. But like the above poster said, I would definately not leave my car there overnight. Cars get broken into in the middle of the day here. If there were garages or at least a gate, I'd consider living there.

hey there: what would be your top 5 safest, yet practical, places/communities to live for years 1-2?

I agree - Pomona has its nice areas (I was at a classmate's house last night and it's beautiful). I was at another classmate's place at the Helix a couple days ago and it's really nice. But like the above poster said, I would definately not leave my car there overnight. Cars get broken into in the middle of the day here. If there were garages or at least a gate, I'd consider living there.

I wish they built a parking structure for the Helix. That was my concern.

it's not THAT terrible, dr.z. maybe im being extra cautious because at least 4 of my friends have had their cars stolen or broken into in the past 2-3 years (in los angeles, not pomona). the wide open lot with no fence or security makes it an easy target for thieves who are known to be present in the surrounding areas. however, i have to admit that the apartment complex itself is quite nice 🙂

I grew up in covina and have always thought of san dimas as a safe area. However, in the last week there was a woman shot 8 times in a walgreen's parking lot (by her husband), a few teens shot at a party and another teen held up in a Burger King parking lot.
In the areas around Pomona, I'll go with:

Phillips Ranch,
claremont,
montclair,
Rancho Cucamonga
chino

please keep in mind each city has its own respective good and bad parts.

I think Chino Hills costs more... anyway - I live in Chino Hills and the only other place I'd consider living as far as a student life, safety, comfort, distance, etc. would be Claremont... but I'm happy in Chino Hills.

I would rather spend an extra $100 a month or so with a couple of roomates than worry about whether or not my car will be on blocks when I wake up. I have a few friends in my class that have a very nice house in Diamond Bar, and they pay ~500 each plus utilities. That is NOT that expensive. Plus it is only 6 miles from school.

look into covina too, it's like 15 minutes away from school and you're always going against traffic! I like it!
